Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a condition in which people taking certain mental health medicines experience uncontrollable repetitive movements of their face, limbs, or other parts of the body, such as facial tics like lip-smacking, tongue thrusting, and rapid blinking. TD affects more than 500,000 Americans.
People experiencing TD develop uncontrollable facial tics like lip-smacking, tongue thrusting, and rapid blinking.

My husband was on risperidone for 5 years due to a serious psychotic break because of vascular dementia. He was weaned off really slowly over the last 8 months and finally stopped his last dose 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago he started tongue movements and chewing. Took him to the dentists thinking he was playing with a broken tooth. Nope......Unfortunately it is TD and getting worse. The tongue is now visibly rolling around in an open mouth, and making him eat in an odd fashion as well. He's back on the antipsychotic at a really low dose just to see if that can reduce the symptoms. This will be reviewed in a month if it doesn't resolve, although doc says we'd know in a week. After the week we'll be alternating the med one day on, one day off until we get to the clinic. Meantime I'll give him antioxidants since some school of thought is that it's the accumulation of free radicals caused by the antipsychotics. Another research article had some success with melatonin 10mg for 6 weeks. Wouldn't mind trying these alternatives but doc has some meds he'll try if all else fails. I'm guessing we're going to be playing catch-up with this latest development. Poor hubby, he wasn't looking demented prior to this but now it's visible to all. It's going to be a long week to see if it'll suppress. Any thoughts, since no one mentioned going back on the original med that caused it in the first place?

What types of doctors should we see and what medications work. I am off all my meds. But the facial and chewing is beyond what I can stand

Psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse can diagnose you. There are VMAT2 inhibitors that can treat it such as Austedo and Ingrezza.

I never had Depression, scitzoeffective, anxiety or any of the other things Dr.Larry DuMont ruined my life as a child giving me this disorder. Im beyond pissed.

Some doctors don't believe TD is caused by Tegretal.

This was very interesting and informative. What a great interview! Fantastic questions, complete and satisfying answers from the Dr's and patient and wife. Thank you for putting this out there. I was curious about it cause I'm experiencing involontary movements on my face. I was wondering if it's a side effect of Chemotherapy. ( breast cancer patient). Had chemo from April 2022 to August 2022. Why is my face doing funny movements? Ughh!
