Targa Top Headliner Repair - Corvette C4

just scored an 86 fiberglass top to replace my shattered acrylic on my 94. The headliner is saggy so I'll do this as soon as i swap out the fiberglas panel into the 1994 targa frame. Sweet!

After 2 years of storage and about $2500 of repairs I finally have my 90 Vette back. Been driving it all this week. Then my wife pointed out the loose material on the Targa top. I was bummed. I looked on KZbin as usual for a fix and found your video. So, with everything I have done to fix things on my Vette this video made me think this is an easy fix. I will do this in the next week. I am sure of how it will go thanks to my past experiences and your video. Thanks for doing this. This was the last thing to fix on the car to put it back to new. You da man!

It's been five years now since you re-did the headliner, how is it holding up? Have you had to take the headliner out since you re-did it, if so how did the Velcro treat the foam backing?

Try Ecklers Corvette, they have lots of aftermarket parts.

Ok, I've done this twice already, and did not get great results. 1st time I used something called Masonite, which is a thin type of wood usually seen in dresser draw bottoms. Spent alot of time measuring to get it perfect. Used the strongest glue i could find, I believe it was m6000 or something like that. Didn't last at long at all... glue would not hold. . Several months later I used corrucated plastic as a base, very very light material, usually for making signs.. covered it with the sponge backed material purchased at The Rag Shop. Used 3M spray adhesive to glue the sponge headliner material to the corrugated plastic. Did not hold up under the heat of the sun, and its not even Summer yet. . BTW, in your video, it seems like you are not putting the headliner board UNDER the lip. I think perhaps the next one I do, I will not try to put the headliner UNDER the lip.

The oem backer is a flexible fiberglass coated material type mat and no it is not tucked in under the lip. It is velcro attached for easy removal repair or cleaning. The glue used must be for headliners. I used Permatex heavy duty headliner and carpet adhesive. 3M also makes a special headliner glue. Hope that helps you out, take it easy

I was in car interior work for 10 years. This is a shbby way of doing this, especially to a vette. I would never use the same material that was in the car. Always use new material with fresh foam backing.

I'm going with a nice new leather one with awesome stitch work. Got the idea when a friend had his sun visors down in leather with red stitching to match his cars paint. His visors are so cool on his 92 ZR1.

Thanks for the video ! Just watched it and then did my top from my 92 vette. Job went well thanks to your work previewing what is involved. The only real deviations on this end were that the panel took some work to get out and the materials were pretty scratchy in places where it separated a bit (maybe I should wear long sleeves next time :-) And I used the adhesive to put the panel back into the roof instead of velcro. Hopefully it will stay (seems OK and panel is light and is well supported around edges). Nice to not have the headliner dragging on my head now !

well I did just what you did and it looks like new bought the new headliner from the fabric dept. from wallmart took a part of the old one from the car and matched it and got extra just in cased I screwed it up got the heavy duty spray an all went well thanks

You were supposed to remove ALL the deteriorated foam, not just the perimeter. It will come loose again. Glue will not hold to a crumbling substrate.

My wife's 40th anniversary Corvette's liner fell down like yours so this video will help me fix it Thanks. I just can't believe a 38,000 car's headliner fell down . That tell me they didn't design them every good but have no problem pricing them over the moon.

I just glued the base to the top , worked great. I felt like the velcro would add space and that it would be stronger than the base if it ever needed to be removed and may tear the base if removed . Hey Ozz, You helped me install my climate control with a video. Worked great. I ordered a brand new headliner assembly (old one was too warped) that came with Velcro tabs. Scraped all old adhesive off, cleaned and installed. It started to fall down within a week. Looks like the roof side adhesive gave way. Ecklers is sending me a new one. Any advice on surface prep? I thought I did a pretty good job. What kind of industrial Velcro is that? Should I use it? Or, do you have any other advice? I live in Palm Springs, CA where it can get scorching hot. Maybe that had something to do with it. Thanks for your help! Your videos have save me tons of $$$$

I use industrial velcro, the expensive stuff. Works fine in temps 90+ degrees and sunny. I have never had any issues. The other option is to glue it in with the expensive spray adhesive but that will make it difficult to ever change out. Industrial Velcro in WIDE strips, about 2 inches, the name brand stuff. Good luck

Did you want to keep the same original material or just didn't want to get headliner material for the top? I am not way a Corvette expert but I would think the headliner material with the sponge backing would have been the way to go.

Ozzstar I have replaced several headliners and I will say your Corvette looked to be the easiest I have seen. My last one was my white trofeo you commented on, I had to let it go and move on because there were a lot of issues with the car. It was easier to find one that didn't need as much work. I am on the market now for an 87 Buick T-type or GN.

IMO, reusing the fabric is a waste of time. For a few bucks, you can buy headliner fabric with new foam backing. Fabric store carry the basic colors(black, gray,tan) other colors can be ordered. I always scrape off all rotted foam.

you can buy fabric online, such as ebay. I chose not to use the foam and as you see in the video the results turned out excellent. Almost a year now and the headliner still looks great

Thank you for sharing Ozzstar! One question I have is did you spray the adhesive on both surfaces? The 3M adhesive can instructions I have says to...second question is did you glue the front edge first so as to keep the alignment of the rest of the liner?

Yes the fabric edge is glued first, then slightly stretched and applied. I only sprayed glued the headliner, not the fabric. Wouldn't hurt if glue was on both sides.

Just a heads up for those interested...I went to the local fabric store and they had padded, black headliner material in stock. I bought 1 yard long and it came 55" wide. Used an online coupon and it was a grand total of $9.53. My old fabric liner was garbage.
