Late Night Lessons

Күн бұрын

Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with Target Tones. This lesson shares its name with one of my published books - ''Target Tones' from Centerstream Publications (2017). While this episode doesn't contain any examples directly from that title, it does share a few of the concepts from that title and should give you some new ideas to practice and mentally chew on.
This lesson focuses on several simple, yet effective approaches to soloing over individual chords and chord progressions, and while the ideas we're hitting here revolve around a minor key, you could easily relate this to major keys, modal tonalities, and much more!
This lesson also features plenty of looping via the TC Electronic Ditto pedal, so to really get an earful and maximum benefit from the ideas shared in this lesson, locate a way to have the chords you'll be playing/soloing over ringing behind you, so you can actually hear what you're doing and why you're doing it as you jam/practice with some of these ideas.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

There's so much knowledge here on how to propel a solo with intent and creativity. I wish this had been in my wheelhouse at the very start. Absolutely foundational to making a solo. I can feel it making me better already. Thank you David!!!

I now find myself checking KZbin every day for Late Night Lessons. I haven't seen a lesson yet that wasn't helpful or informative in some way. I'm constantly going back and checking out the older stuff (especially on rainy days, lol). I wish I knew about these lessons from the start. Great stuff Mr. Brewster! Please keep them coming.

It’s like you don’t know (although I’m sure you do) what you know! Those “unscripted riffs” could have been Knopfler, Gilmore, Moore or even Jeff Beck!!! Soulful and melancholy with the best of them.

People often seem to equate ability, to having no music or little fretboard knowledge. To 'fly blind' is the realm of genius.

Great lesson, this really helped! Reminds me I need to knuckle down on properly learning the neck. Any chance on a lesson for learning the notes on the fretboard, its something that's always held me back from really understanding things, not knowing the neck 100% makes me quite slow at certain things. Thanks :- )

Quick question: Artists are covering the material in their books on patreon, any plans to do something similar with Target Tones either on Patreon or YT? I think it could be a great series. Trying to play through changes and know what I'm playing (notes, intervals etc) has exposed frustrating gaps in my musicianship. I like this video in part because it relates to a pentatonic scale course I'm studying from a similar yet different perspective.

First of all, that usually indicates a player doesn't know all of the notes on the fretboard (learn all 7 positions of the C Major scale). That said, it's all about learning the chords, forget single note lines at first. Learn all of the inversions of each Major and minor chord (caged system). There are not that many shapes really, the main thing is being able to play those chords from any position on the neck. Once you see those chords everywhere, the target notes are sort of made apparent. Take a 2 or 3 chord progression and don't try to solo over it at first, just play the chords themselves in different positions. Like say E Major and A minor. Play the "A shape" E major chord on the 7th fret, then play the "D minor shape" on the 7th fret witch is an A minor chord. Once you know where all of these chord inversions are, the target notes will basically present themselves wherever you are on the fretboard. It's all about the journey. Been playing and teaching since the 80's myself, and still learning and getting better. Have fun. ^-^

@@aylbdrmadison1051 I do agree, Id love to see Dave do a series on this....But that explanation is one of the clearest Ive ever heard!.. Ive been playing a long time and still have trouble with exactly this process 'on the fly'. I really like hearing how others make this connection, and the thought process behind it. Wonderful vid as always from Dave and a really perfect comment section to accompany it!.. I do love this channel!.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 Tremendous! Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful reply. It's this kind of engagement that makes this community great. When I was teen playing my first notes and shapes, I heard an interview with Ian Thornley from Big Wreck, there were kind of a big deal here in Canada then, his advice to new players was to learn every note on the guitar - cold. Almost there. It's funny you mention being able to play the major scale in all 7 positions. I attended a guitar workshop at Humber College in '08, and as part of the student assessment/screening process I was asked to do that very thing. I couldn't and was placed in a beginner class. It's forever known as Humble college now. Hahaha I'm picking up what you're putting down. I'm familiar with the maj caged chords. I took a look at the 7 maj scales forms. I learned these shapes as a teen. I need to learn the notes on the fretboard and start working on inversions which always confuses me. Cheers!

Are there any exercises you can do to learn to hear the chords better and not get lost in the progression? It's hard to keep up with the chords.
