I remember this cliffhanger right around the time I graduated college. I was then in the dorms in grad school the night of the Season 5 opener, and I had a lousy little B&W TV in my room, so I went up to the 5th floor lounge, which had a large, nice color TV, hoping the people there wouldn't mind me watching it -- the room was packed with grad students who were STTNG fans, and everyone wanted to see what was going to happen. One of the best evenings of watching TNG that I ever had.

Denise Cosby doesn’t have enough lines and screen time to be in credits in opening credits by union rules. There is always circumstances but it’s mostly based on the screen time. Someone like Q would be in the show most of the time, so by the rules his name would be placed in the opening
@WilliamPitcher2 ай бұрын
Yep - And agents and credited individuals tend to be more concerned about their careers than spoilers. There's only four categories in SAG/AFTRA - Extras, Under Fives (under five lines), Day Players (full parts) and Guest Stars (including Special Guest Stars). Under 5s do not get opening credits.
@silikon22 ай бұрын
Hmm. I didn't know about that. However I know there's a DS9 ep where an actor agreed to be credited in the end to avoid spoiling something, obviously can't say more.

Another small note too, in the previous episode with Crosby, it was only her voice with a stand-in actress in the shadow.
@BrandonFrancey2 ай бұрын
I want to argue this because of a future 2-parter that has a surprise guest who has even fewer lines than Denise does in this episode, but he is credited in the opening credits. I don't want to go into spoilers but it may have has something to do with circumstances.
@TheParticleWave2 ай бұрын
The real reason Denise Crosby’s name isn’t in the credits for “Redemption” is that her reveal in the last scene is a genuine surprise that wasn’t spoiled by any leaks, print ads, or trailers. The other guest stars Alex and Josh get upset with being “spoiled” as they watch the Act One credits aren’t actually real surprises or reveals from the point of view of the writers and producers. This genuinely was a surprise twist and intended to be so. The episode titles and the vast majority of the guest stars were never treated as spoilers when the show originally ran, no matter when they appeared in the narrative. This is different.

TNG is such an interesting point in time for TV develpoment. You're right that they were aware of things like spoiling the hook/plot of a story with titles, etc - but they were only just sort of figuring out that style of television at this point. As you watch the seasons you'll see them figure it out, and at the end you'll see something much more similar to our expectations today. That's part of what made Star Trek so groundbreaking - the 90's run of Star Trek really was foundational to how we make media.

@@Reepicheep-1 Can't forget about cable TV primarily Oz and The Sopranos. Cable was forgotten and ignored and usually DISMISSED before the rise and prominence of HBO and the serious respect they started to demand even from The Emmys. the focus from broadcast to cable would take place in the 90s on many levels and we are talking ORIGINAL programming and not just reruns. To me, the reason he never really showed a desire to leave to go to his people has 2 main points. 1) He didn't think it was possible since he was shunned from his people. He had to accept that until that changed he just couldn't come back. That changed in this episode and suddenly became a real possibility. 2) His people were going into a civil war, meaning both Gowron needed help to keep the Romulans from gaining shadow control of the Klingons AND an opening to make his family gain major power in the Klingon hierarchy almost immediately. So basically in one episode his reality went from being shunned by his people and having to accept he can never go back, to not only being able to go back, but the leader NEEDING his help and influence while also helping fight the common enemy of the Federation (he already knows the Duras work with the Romulans).

In the past, particularly during the mid-20th century, it was standard practice to display all key cast members' names in the opening credits, regardless of whether their appearance might spoil a plot twist. This was partly due to Screen Actors Guild (SAG) rules and contractual obligations that mandated prominent credit placement for actors, particularly if they were series regulars. The guild's rules prioritized protecting actors' visibility and careers, ensuring they received due recognition for their work. As TV shows became more focused on surprising or shocking audiences (e.g., with the return of a presumed-dead character), producers started finding creative ways to balance contractual obligations with narrative needs. Some approaches included: 1. Delaying Credits: Instead of placing an actor's name in the opening credits, they might be moved to the end credits for a particular episode. 2. Guest Star Billing: If a returning character was technically no longer a series regular, they might be credited as a "special guest star" in the end credits, preserving the surprise. 3. Contractual Adjustments: Actors increasingly signed contracts allowing flexibility in how and when their credits appeared. This was especially common for cameo appearances or surprise returns.

Elite level TNG. As noted this just picks up varying threads, weaves them together to push forward Worf's and the Klingon political upheaval stories. Gowron comes into his own as a character and I love the tension that is produced by putting Worf and Picard into positions where they are at odds but both still acting according to their personal codes of ethics. No one is right or wrong so something has to give and Worf chooses to leave Starfleet. The scene of Worf disembarking from Enterprise D tugs at the heart. He's a senior Bridge officer and has become beloved and respected by the crew. I think the truest look into Worf's heart was his sadly expressed "Goodbye". He didn't say something Klingon or go for warrior poetry, he was saddened he was leaving his crew behind and felt he HAD to make that choice. As for that ending, and all the speculation about Crosby... I'm sure your audience is like me right now, squirming not to just post ALL the spoilers. All Imma say about where this goes is I think you will like how they wrap this up. I have always enjoyed this two parter a lot.

@@shauncraigparkinson8165 | I'm rewatching it right now for the first time since it originally aired, and I'm about five episodes out from the end of the first season. I don't think I'll ever put it up there with the previous four shows, but I do regard it more highly this time out than I did when it first aired. I will say that visually, it's my favorite Trek show of all. It has the best look and special effects, but they hadn't gone overboard with that stuff yet. NuTrek is 2much. Enterprise hits the sweet spot. It's both realistic looking and visually stunning at the same time.

One thing kind of weird about this episode is Gowron saying women can't serve on the council. He already offered K'Ehleyr (RIP) an offer to appoint her to the council. I feel like they could have said something like "Women can not serve on the council unless appointed by the Chancellor." ... "We are not like our brother." "He did not respect the Federation or us. You know he refused to petition K'mpec for our appointment to the Council. Said that he alone should be the voice of the Duras clan." "So he slighted us both." "Indeed so forget him." Anyway the Season Finales after this I think are somewhat less good. I might get people angry at me for saying that, but I'm not saying how and I'm just stating what I think. These two may prefer them.

And now as I did last season here are some guesses on reaction for Season 5. (Don't worry they will be spoiler free in any usual sense and if it's like last time I'll forget them by the time they start Season 5.) 1. A or B 2. Go out on a limb and guess S. 3. A, possibly S. 4. A or B 5. A, possibly S. 6. C. 7. S 8. S 9. B 10. B 11. A 12. C 13. B 14. A 15. B 16. B 17. Uncertain 18. S 19. A 20. D 21. B 22. B 23. S 24. A 25. Hopefully S, but going by their track record maybe A instead. 26. B

I totally understand where it’s difficult to rate an episode without a resolution. I do understand your critiques of the episode as well. I don’t believe that Worf leaving Starfleet is completely out of left field though. He’s always been torn. He appreciates humans and what Starfleet has done for him, but his heart has always been Klingon. He also knows the ramifications of the Duras family taking control of a Klingon Empire. And like Picard, he aware that the Romulans are involved. He made the ultimate sacrifice to save the Klingon empire from going into Civil War. He couldn’t stay on the enterprise and not be involved. He couldn’t leave his brother hanging either. It also makes sense that there was no big ceremony restoring his name because they are in a Civil War.

S4 is excellent. S5 is the best TNG season. DS9 is my favourite. The Human Adventure is only just beginning for you both. So much Trek to come.

Best season of TNG. You’ll like the Denise Crosby explanation, and it makes perfect sense. This is still the epic era of Trek, so writing is key and everything has to make sense. Modern Trek, not at all.

Is there a deadline for the 615 goal? And does it matter which tier membership is joined?

No deadline, the goal remains until we hit it. Any of the currently available tiers count towards the goal.

That wasn't Denise in The Mind's Eye - it was a stand in - her voice was added after the episode was shot - that and the cameo* in this episode kept her out of the credits for both episodes. *Because of the limited nature of the performance - for instance none of the cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine made the opening credits (and, yes, it is contractual - Jenette Goldstein (Vasquez) should have been in the opening credits of Aliens because of the amount of time she was on screen - but she was new to the business and I'm not sure why her agent agent didn't get it in her contract - of course when she found out she got another agent). While they may only be in an episode for a short time Guinan and O'Brien aren't cameos - they're semi-regulars - so they make the additional cast credits And you are late to the party - Gates McFadden showing up in the opening credits of episode one of season 3 is because she was back again as main cast - it was no secret - it was no surprise - it was in newspaper entertainment section and TV Guide long before the episode aired. If you consider the credits a spoiler, it is possible to have someone blur/remove the credits you don't want to see - I don't know how to do it - but I do know it has been done for other reactors (for instance Jessica of sessksays).
