I think I heard that if the swearing isn't in the first 30 sec of the video it doesn't get demonetized. Edit: Just checked and it seems to be true.... You can turn on ads for this content: Abbreviated, censored, or light profanity (like “hell” or “damn”) in the title, thumbnail, or video. Moderate profanity (like “shit” or “bitch”) used in the video. Infrequent usage of strong profanity (like the "f-word”) after the opening or up to twice in approx. the first 30 seconds of the video; or strong profanity in a music video.

I was obese and I also take corticosteroids, so I did a really solid job of stretching out my the skin around my abdomen. The first time I leaned out was pretty disappointing, I had a ton of loose skin just hanging around. It got better though. Each subsequent time I've leaned out my belly skin has got a little tighter, and it's getting close to not being an issue. I ended up where Dr. Mike suggested, when I'm building I fill out to where I can just see the outline of my abs, and I call it good.

The loose skin is maddening. I am 5’8 and shredded now, striations all over and you wouldn’t know my lower abs have some loose skin from being about 206lbs at my heaviest. I had a pot belly and probably was over 35 percent body fat. Back to the abs, I am finally starting to lose the loose skin around my abs from doing a lot of ab training to make them blockier. The biggest thing for me is patience. The loose skin is finally going away through having my abdominals pop more while still losing some more body fat. I think for those who are really obese you might consider surgery if the skin is very drastic. But for anyone like me just have patience and keep going. Some of us aren’t gifted with the best body fat distribution and it might be the very last area to go. Thanks Dr Mike for all of your help over the years.

My take/story. So I was obese most of my teenager years. At 18 years old I received my first gym bench and began my fitness journey. During university years I was obsessed with loosing weight and finally becoming fit. I’ve dropped around 35kg which is ~80 pounds. Sadly, i did it by exhausting my body with very low caloric intake and tons of cardio. Since then I’ve struggled a lot with loose skin. Finally I’ve came to visit a very good surgeon, who told that my case is pretty radical. I’d need to spend around 30 thousand dollars with 3-4 different surgeries. He even told me that even after this, my body will look good mostly in clothes, only then I will look fit etc. But without it? Well everyone will be able to tell, that something is off and unnatural with my physique. Also, overall threatment would be a case of 1-2 years of surgery-suffering-recovery and repeat. I’ve resigned and decided to abandon my dreams of becoming super jacked guy. Now I’m doing 6 days a week “Dr Mike’s favorite” on RP and slowly building up mass/muscles to match my skin. I’m quite aware it might not be perfect over the years, but I love bodybuilding and I won’t give up. All the best to everyone reading, and take care! Remember to take care of yourself during crucial times and stay strong!

This video is already over 2 years old, but the title caught my attention. I've always been of the understanding that all the sits ups in the world, wont give you a six pack, so I was surprised at your initial study mention until you quantified it with the caveats of a tiny percentage or possibly measurement inaccuracies. During my bout with Covid I went from a trained 240 (not lean, still carried a good bit of fat) all the way down to 183Lbs in just 4 weeks on a respirator. I couldn't even walk without a walker, let alone train. I blew up to 267lbs over the next three years. Eventually I was sick of myself and got with a coach who set me up with a decent program. I've been soaking up knowledge from this channel the past, I don't know, year and half maybe. I'm in a really good place now. Im 56 years old and currently 187.4 pounds as I prep for a show in November. I 100% have a bit of loose skin on my abs, but can still hide it fairly well (wont be hitting a most muscular or front abs very well though). An OG at the gym mentioned preparation h and plastic wrap as a short term fix. anyone else have any ideas?

Extra skin is real. I was 510 lbs when I graduated high school-- YOLO'd hard for about 2.5 years and got down to 6'4" 230 lbs by eating 1800/cals/day incredibly unsustainable (had nothing but water, didn't go to a restraunt, didn't eat thanksgiving/christmas dinner.. nothing) obviously ended up dating someone and went out to eat, etc etc. Got all the way back up to 385 at my peak-> I've sustainably got down to ~240 and have held steady there for 3+ years now but holy smokes the extra skin is insane. I suspect the rebound back did quite a number, but anyways.. hoping for that biotech sooner than later because I really don't want to get surgery lol

I decided to compete this year. I went from 246 to 205. I look great. My wife asked that I stop competing because I fucked up my prep last time and nearly died. She begged me to do it again. I decided that she was right. Long story short, I decided to stay at this weight. I like how I feel, I like how I look so I stayed at maintenance calories and now weigh 208-210. My joints feel great, I’m getting stronger, and my wind is far better than ever. The one thing that bothers the crap out of me is the little loose skin around the lower ab region. It drives me bananas. But how many other 54 year old dudes can get this lean?? I’m proud of what I accomplished at my age and if it means a small loose skin then it’s nothing.
@okronk
@okronk 2 жыл бұрын
I had almost the same experience. Decided to compete in physique class (1st show, I’m 63 and 6’ tall), got into a prep regimen, lost 20 lbs in 2 months (200 to 180), amped up my training intensity, etc. - then crashed. I’ve kept the weight off, used the lessons I learned during my aborted prep and have maintained my weight at 180. Feel fabulous and still have the muscular, lean look that I want. I have a bit of loose skin around my navel area which is kind of annoying but I get a lot of positive comments from 20-somethings at the gym so I’ll take the bit of loose skin with no complaints. Take care.

As usual, the Doc is spot on! I am 75, 5'11" and weighed 233.5 on 5/1/2023, plump, but only about 13 lbs. over weight when playing hoops in my 30s and 40s- reduced to 219.0 by 6/28/2023 for 75th birthday (to fit into favorite suit), then on down to 210.0 on 8/9/2023, when I started lifting. Presently at 192.1, good progress - 185x8, 70x12 incline. However, I have vertical folds of ugly loose skin, one on each side of my navel, and my skin is not resilient enough at my age to tighten back up. Figured over the last 6 months as I got in better and better condition that something good would happen - NO MAS. Advice - stay at a weight level you can live with permanently; after a certain point, cosmetic surgery is about the only solution, and that seems vain and wasteful.

The problem with getting shredded naturally is your body's own safety mechanism. I can diet down to 10% naturally. But if I try and go any further, I just begin to lose muscle with the fat and just turn into a smaller me. No matter how shredded you get w/o drugs, you can get even more shredded with them. You will never get as lean without drugs as you would with them without losing muscle. That's the Achilles heel that was strangely, not mentioned here.

I recall reading an article about researchers who were gonna look into fasting+weight training as a potential solution to loose skin. The hypothesis was that the autophagy would source proteins to repair the muscles from the excess skin. Not sure what the status is on this tho so don't take it as gospel
@GaudyGabriev
@GaudyGabriev 3 жыл бұрын
Not only don't take it a gospel, it isn't supported by any serious research (and in fact doens't really happen). More so, that magical link between fasting and autophagy is something spectacularly blown up over how autophagy actually works.

The only real issue I have with 1g protein per body weight is someone like me trying to get in 200ish grams of protein per day. Now I know I can be fine with .8g/lb but trying to hit ~160g protein is still tough considering thats 5-6 meals of 30g protein. Having a protein shake gets like 50g which is helpful and that'll leave you with 4 meals of 30g protein each but trying to hit that original 200ish gram goal is difficult
@imvisier9925
@imvisier9925 7 ай бұрын
I never really understood this struggle. Getting 30g of protein even in a mostly carb heavy breakfast almost happens on its own, especially if you include a protein shake in. 50g protein lunch & dinner are also easy to get to as long as the main thing they include is some lean meat, and 25g protein desserts for after lunch & dinner are a dime a dozen if you follow any of the meriad of "protein cooks" here or on instagram. I can usually get to 200g of protein at roughly 3k calories, which is my maintenance while still keeping the meals quite tasty, with some cutting back I can get to 170g of protein at a little over 2k cals for cutting.

There is limited progress in reducing loose skin when you fast for extended periods of time, like 3-5 days, due to autophagy. Downsides: you will certainly lose some muscle, and the effect is small. If you have a lot of loose skin, then probably surgery.

Dr Mike, Question what are your thoughts on this. Morning fasted train abs followed by low intensity cardio for 30 mins. I saw Jeff Nippard bring up this study on spot reducing fat and it would make since that if the fat in an area you have just trained is liquified so to speak wouldn't the fat burn during cardio immediately after mostly come from the fat in the area trained IE belly fat in this case?

No, your body pulls fat as energy from all over your body regardless of body part worked You are completely missing steps from how the body burns fat Is it possible that doing bicep curls burns fat from the bicep area, I guess but also by same logic aren't you burning fat from your triceps, front delts and forearms too? So this logic doesn't really help the spot reduction claim, as in order to burn fat from your stomach you'd also be burning it from parts of your back and any other body part that is required by the particular ab exercise you are doing It just doesn't make sense logically to me regardless of the fact these studies haven't been reproduced and therefore the data is fairly low quality and doesn't mean much in my eyes

I've heard the fasting thing, too. Jason Fung claims that his patients rarely, if ever, have loose skin after losing weight by fasting. I can say from personal experience that loose skin from time-restricted eating is definitely still a thing, but maybe full-on long-term water fasting is different? His position was that the body will prioritize the extra skin to breakdown for protein before it starts chewing away at muscle tissue. No idea if there's actual proof to back that up, though.

@@greghill158 dry fasting is apparently what will take care of loose skin, not water fasting. "Hard" dry fasting is supposed to be even more effective than regular dry fasting. @@mohawk1623 I've never seen even the most ardent fasting fanatics recommend extended dry fasting since you'll die within a few days without any water at all. Certainly Dr. Fung doesn't recommend it and he made the claims about fasting fixing loose skin that I've seen. Maybe we're defining our terms differently? To me, water fast means no food at all, just water and maybe some salts and vitamins, and dry fast means no food or liquid at all.

I don't recommend either of the dry fasts for anyone, especially people trying to build muscle. Never thought I'd be discussing fasting on this channel lol

Loose skin is often blamed on genetics or a side effect of massive weight loss. But the reality is that it comes from people losing weight too quickly. Say you had a 300lb guy who had a goal of getting down to 200lbs. If he took 1-2 years losing 1-2lbs per week with occassional diet breaks and regular lifting, no loose skin. Also it'd stay off because he wouldn't destroy his BMR. But most people are uneducated and always want it as fast as possible. So they severely restrict calories and turn doing cardio into a second day job. This results in muscle loss, a very slow BMR, and loose skin. Then to add insult to injury, they slowly gain the weight back.

So I gained weight like a crazed madman at a *_Renaissance_* Fair year round drinking mead and eating rotisserie lamb legs during the lockdowns, packing on about 100lbs...in two years. Less really. Anyway, I gained it so quick that aftr a bought with...constipation, I ended up tearing my abs, or what pregnant chicks lovingly call, diastasis. Of course I was stunned to find out that insurance does pay to fix it *IF* you have a hernia too. If you just have the middle of your stomach poking through a separated muscle which is covered by extra skin, well then they don't. So you gotta get a tummy tuck out of pocket to fix it. Luckily, I'm a guy who likes picking up heavy things, and losing a lot of weight also helps since it reduces the internal fat which pushes your insides _out,_ so mixing the two and really getting that mind-muscle connection can, for all intents and purposes, hide it very effectively making it look _normal_ when you tighten your stomach. It also let me learn a few things about extra skin surgeries and the newest techniques. First, they can do some pretty crazy shit now, fixing the diastasis itself with minimally invasive surgery. Just go through the belly button with a camera and two other small holes, one that pulls the ab over to where it should be while the other sutures, then switch sides, repeat, and depending on how large the tear is they'll do that 1-3 times per side (all from the same centimeter sized holes, so they aren't poking a new one for each). No more having to put this giant slice into your stomach like a C-Section and cutting off the skin from the bottom unless there is a *lot* of extra skin, and if it was a rapid 100lbs weight gain and loss, then it probably is not necessary. What they can do for the extra skin is closer to a _face lift_ than a 1990s _tummy tuck._ They can put the incisions in the love handle area and basically just pull the skin tight on each side, making two much smaller wounds which in turn heal faster, are less likely to tear as we tend to bend a lot more at the middle than we do at the sides, at least with a lot of flexion; it's just a decent option for people that may need/want it but don't need to have a 7"+ vertical curtain of skin removed. It's still about $10K though even though they do not have to knock you out to do it (though it is an option and most doctors prefer it that way so they can just flip and flop you like a sleeping fish instead of dealing with a 15% conscious patient rambling sweet nothings about how their spouse doesn't care about them, but that pool cleaner, now they really care...). So, they are already coming up with new, less invasive and faster healing methods that don't risk the same nerve damage or intestinal infections the older methods often ran into. Now will we ever have nanobots to do this type of thing? Of course, but I'd suspect that will come much, much later on as the main innovation in that line of tech seems to be for viruses and cancers along with actual essential organ repair, and rightfully so. I mean what's more important, some Brazilian Slav who decided to be lazy as a doped up prairie dog during a virus lockdown, sitting in front of a screen 15+ hours per day either working or playing video games, or helping someone who sustained massive internal damage during an accident? Or found out they had some rogue cells wreaking havoc to their body from the inside out for no other known reason than genetics along with a series of unknowable life events that left them with stage 4 whatever? I am going with fix them first, my vanity can wait forever if need be. On the other hand, I do think it is bullshit that insurance won't pay for the regular fix as tearing your ab in the middle of the fricken muscle, and tearing that off the stomach wall is pretty f'd up and can lead to some pretty serious injuries that would otherwise lead to absolutely nothing because, well a wall of muscle that is supposed to protect an area is no longer in the spot it is supposed to be to protect your center mass. That can be a big deal. But, it isn't quite risky enough for insurance companies to justify the cost even if you have zero interest in the _tummy tuck_ part of the operation. The injury can also happen without gaining a bunch of weight as well, it is just the most common occurrence seems to be pregnancy, and most women want a tummy tuck with it anyway, so with no hernia surgeons simply do not do the damn operation, with plastic surgeons apparently being the most qualified bc they perform them the most. Lol, the entire thing is just weird. Avoid the entire thing and listen to Mike. If you lose your abs (if you can ever see them) or see stretch marks reach belly button height, there's a very good chance you are going to have extra skin if you do not start losing weight ASAP, and will almost assuredly have extra skin if you put on any more weight. Oh, and lobby Congress to force insurance companies to pay for this crap. It happens to something nuts, like 50% of women in the US during pregnancy. To pay hundreds of dollars per week (my ex-wife and I were paying over $1k/m for two _OK_ family insurance plans) and have the damn companies fight tooth and nail to not cover things, have deductibles in the 5 figure range with a max of, idk, say $750-$1500 per occurrence, stupid high medication deductibles etc., it is something that should, for all intents and purposes, be covered. I mean I know the crazy rich folks who want us to live in pods and eat cricket paste don't exactly want us reproducing unless we apply for a license and promise to raise good little hot cheetos flavored cricket paste pod dwelling hive worker ants, but until we get tot hat point, as long as women still need to carry babies to term (or close to it) then we really should help them out with a little extra skin and a muscle tear. Me? Eh, I just got fat, shame on me. Having it happen due to a 35lb weight gain during pregnancy though? Yeah, insurance companies need to cover that shit.
