First rifle that I had the pleasure to shot was my father's 1948 model 94 in 30-30. He bought it new, shot a buck, then it sat in my parents closet till I was a teenager. I asked him to take me to a range to shoot. I think we must have finished off that box of ammo that was left over from his hunt. I shot it again a couple of years ago when I inherited it when my older brother passed away. Still shoots great and looks almost new. I cherish the rifle and the memories it has given our family.

I won my 94 in a raffle about 1966. My eyesight not being the best, I couldn’t hit the proverbial side of a barn with it until I replaced the open sights with a peep sight. I also refinished the finish on the stock with baked in linseed oil, and it’s still good all these years later.

So many times you see a rifle in that condition at a gun show and pass it by thinking it was abused and neglected. But a back story like that makes it a genuine family treasure. I watch a great video of some luthier stabilizing Willie's guitar. I think he had named it trigger. That's kind of what needs to happen to this 30-30. It needs to be stabilized. And that's hard to do without taking the stock off. My cousin's dad only passed away recently so I understand his feelings about leaving it as it is for now. I think I would do the same.

I never owned a Winchester 94 in caliber .30-30 , but I did own and hunt with a Winchester 94 chambered in .32 Winchester Special. It was a great little hunting rifle for the north east woods. When I married my wife she wanted to learn how to hunt, so I gave her my Winchester 94 -.32 spl. and she killed a few deer with it as well. The guy I bought the rifle off of killed a few black bear in Maine with it too.

3030 is an awesome hunting caliber and you when you combine it with the 94 Winchester it’s absolutely awesome, i’ve taken well over 50 deer with a good old 94 Winchester in 30-30, although the 94 in 32 Winchester special is my favorite of the 94s, that being said the 1886 is my all time favorite lever action style, and the 71 Winchester is my all time favorite rifle, 71 has the best ergonomics of any rifle I’ve ever used

being highly knowledgeable and extremely experienced in much weapons . reloading, honest test s, much shooting. it’s my belief the 30-30 Winchester to be the most underrated center fire we have today. then 22 mag. having been told by so many arm chair experts that don’t know what they are talking about that the 30-30 ain’t good for about 100 yards. I have shot 30-30 lever actions ,single shots scopes, open sights . samd bags, off hand, creedmore sty. you name it . at 25-400 yards. and say you won’t find a much better hunting/self defense weapon . it a cartridge during riots and looting you can stake your life on . sure a ak47 or ar 15 would be a better choice but every one don’t have them so use what go got . practice. nana papa aka the hunter wishing you well.

That Model 94 has lived some life. I have an old Model 94 in 32 Special. Various myths about 32 Sp. but I don’t know which is true. One tale says the 32 was more suited to reloading with black powder, another says the 30-30 shot better than the 32 when they had some wear & tear on ‘em. With matching bullet weight and operating pressure, I suspect the 32 bullet started out a bit faster but lost velocity more quickly. Doubt the game would ever know the difference. These old Winchesters are fun, and many have tales to tell, if they could only talk! 👍

The only longarm I've ever purchased new in the box was a '94 in .30-30. I walked right past Marlin and Savage models and spent my Grit newspaper delivery money on it. Fast forward into my early 20s and I traded that '94 off for another rifle I can now barely recall....And regretted it as soon as deer season rolled around. -Back then I did all my deer hunting sitting on a stump or I tracked/walked 'em up. Now in my late 60s I have a small collection of Marlins, Savages, and exactly one Model 94 in .30-30. It's a USA made, pre safety model, and I'm of the opinion the original owner never even loaded it as it was in pristine condition when I found it on the rack of a small Mom & Pop gun and pawn in Maryland several years ago. For $300.00 and tax it went home with me. I love me some Marlins and my Savages, barring a disaster, will never leave my possession, but I have had a couple of "Son of a....! Which one should I take with me on this hunt?" moments when trying to decide between one of my Marlins and the Winchester when I knew I was going to be hunting in close to relatively close cover.

Your son has an awesome shop! I collect Winchesters and the 1894/94 was never my favorite, though I have more of them (and variations like the Model 55 and Model 64) than any other model. Mostly because they were always much more available and much more economical to acquire. No denying they have been a hunting basic for more than 125 years. I understand the need for the single rear locking lug and dropping link in order to get cartridges the length of a .30-30 in a receiver roughly the same size as a Model 1892. But it seems like a rattletrap to me, compared to an 1886 or 1892 or Model 71. Yes, I killed more than a few deer with Model 94s and .30-30. Does the job just fine. I look forward to the next "brush gun" video.

As a retired mechanical engineer I appreciate the design of the model 94, but like you, the 1886 and 1892 are my favorite designs.

@@TargetSuite I suspected as much. Your testing protocols and your methodical analysis of issues, such as with the Ruger Single Six, had me convinced you were a mechanical engineer. The Model 94 and the Model 95 were designs intended to meet a specific goal, and they did, with the compromises necessary to also make them light and manageable. They were both plenty string for their intended purpose. Browning was a mechanical genius

Browning accomplished more using a pencil and paper than most modern design engineers do today with a $20,000 CAD package.

Paul it's always tempting but you'd lose so much of what makes this rifle what it is today.

Very nice! I think to stop the dog from whining, put nail polish on its toe nails (as you call them). It's not that this makes the dog happy. They just pass out from the fumes.
