Thank you, so much! I really liked doing the subtitles for this. It was very interesthing. It was also very interesthing to hear your thoughts on this. And I knew you already understood Tarja quite well (and what she went through with NW) through her solo career, but I am sure this just made things more clearer. I am glad that Tarja did this concert. After that media storm, this is what people needed... and to be honest, this is what she needed to do and to at least try to clear her name. But it was unfair for Tarja, to put her in this kind of situation where she needs to defend herself, publicly, about something that should have never been public. I am amazed how well she hold it together. This was a very difficult moment for her. She was clearly still very hurt (I mean it had only been a few weeks). And I absolutely love what Tarja is doing now. Her solo career is amaxing. It is exactly what she wants. And she looks so happy. But after all, I am very glad that everyone has moved on... I am very gald that everything seems to turned out alright... it took years but it seems good now. Tarja is now happy and she is happy performing with Marko again. NW is happy... and Tuomas seems happy too and he is not bitter about Tarja and Marko performing NW songs.

Many thanks to Tuuli for the translation. And also thanks a lot for the reacion. Your channel is so far into e knowledge of both Tarja and Nightwish that I can't imagine more qualified reactors for this press conference. This press conference was very enlightening. I'm glad to finally hear Tarja's perspective on the whole situation, the history in the band and the letter. It was very mature. And despite what happened, she is still very grateful to the band. It can also be seen that she always had a stronger connection with Marko than with the other band members. And Marko was still trying to find a way to her. I'm glad they found their way to each other and are closer than ever. And that even between her and Tuomas, things are getting better.

Thanks for this reaction video. It made me go watch the press conference and Q and A. What struck me was how mature, gracious, and forgiving she was. I believe her account was honest and gave a good picture. As in my earlier comment the band made a bad and hurtful decision in both her firing and how they went about it. The toxicity this caused, despite Tarja setting an example otherwise, adversely affected Annette who replaced Tarja and by all accounts the band treated her badly too in her departure.

The Tarja we see here is pretty much the Tarja we've come to know through her solo career: genuine, direct, great human values, knows her own mind and is quite in control, aspires to focus on the creative side. I think she did a great job of putting some of the criticisms made against her in context. I still feel choked up when i watch the finale of the End of Era concert. It was a beautiful adventure or dream and one would wish for it to have had a happy ending. Tuomas was talking about the 30th anniversary of Nightwish in 2026: could there finally be peace or some kind of reconciliation by then? I think that would mean a lot to a lot of people (and aggravate the hell out of some of the so-called "new fans" 😂). Anyway, onwards! Tarja will keep on living her dream ❤

@HandleyR the band was toxic for tarja. Same for Annette and marko. Even yuka didn't handle it. Nightwish is what it is now because of tarja . Back then nigjtwish were real symphonic metal band. Respect their history . It all began with tarja.like it or not.9 years my friend!!! They changed the style of their music because of tarjas voice. Without her nightwish would be an acoustic band. Tuomas went to tarja. He wanted her to the band. You can say whatever you want, but you can't change their beggining and their history. Respect.

Thank you for doing this Kyle. 👍🏻 And Tuuli, thank you so much for the translation. You did an amazing job.👏🏻 Everyone who blamed Tarja and call her still today a selfish diva should watch this. So they can see, she never was a diva. Even after getting this awful letter she is still thankful for her time in NW. And her explanations are completely understandable. But I guess even if Tuomas would say, that everything is true what Tarja said, there are many stubborn haters who wouldn’t believe it… because they don’t want to believe it. Then they would have no one left to hate…

I'll just add that recetly was published an article in the Finnish Inferno, where Tarja describes how Marko's apology at Raskasta Joulua 2017 came about. _After a few gigs, Marko called the entire production into the back room and apologized to me in front of everyone, Tarja says with genuine emotion in her voice, but doesn't begin to reveal the details of the situation any further._ I have huge respect for Marko for apologizing to her in front of his colleagues and friends

If there was communication, I bet Tarja would have been fine agreeing to that being her last tour. She offered to do another album and tour to help them. She probably dreaded doing another tour with them. They could have just discussed it with her instead of firing her in such a shady way. They tried to ruin her in that letter.
@OathKeeper95
@OathKeeper95 2 ай бұрын
I agree! Let’s say that even if for example what they said about her in that letter was true, that’s not the right way to fire someone. Not even when you work for a company… they tried to ruin her and her reputation. That was horrible for her 💔 but I’m grateful I’ve been her fan for so many years.
@PatrickHutton
@PatrickHutton 9 күн бұрын
Exactly. She said herself that it took her some time to be able to trust people again. That and the doubts they tried to sow with the letter probably did harm her. Very sad. She was around 28 when they sacked her after 9 years with them. That her entire adult life smeared, soured, and gone. I wonder if there was some jealousy from the keyboard guy that she was really coming into her own in voice, stage presence, and confidence and that she "needed to be bought down a peg or two".

I think that just as Tarja was grateful to Nightwish for her successful career, Nightwish was grateful to Tarja for her unique voice and invaluable contribution to band. At that time Nightwish and Tarja were made for each other. It's just a pity that firing of bassist Sami didn't teach Tuomas anything. Tuomas preferred to keep silent and avoid problems, hoping that everything would be solved by itself, instead of trying to talk about problems together and solve them at initial stage.

The End of Innocence documentary has english subtitles, and there Tuomas explains more about why he quit in 2001 and was later told by a friend, "if you quit now, you'll regret it for the rest of your life" and he came to realise that too. That documentary really shows the extent of the drinking, partying and general mayhem that Tarja had to be amongst - I personally could NEVER go through 15-20 shows per month WHILE not getting enough sleep WHILE constantly fearing the risk of vocal damage - she really did the utmost. Tuomas also speaks about the firing of Sami and how he didn't have the guts to tell him in person, which in 2002 was his biggest regret up top that point. More recently he has said that when Sami and Marko left the band he got the feeling that Nightwish might truly be done for, but he DIDN'T get that feeling with Tarja or Anette. (Tuomas, due to his childhood, grew up to be somewhat overprotected and *extremely* conflict-averse - "sing what you can't say")

I've not watched this yet. I'm only a recent NW enjoyer too. But Tarja's singing voice really touches the soul for me that neither Floor nor Annette can. Whilst we'll never know for certain it seemed so cruel, two faced, petulant, childish, cowardly, and damaging the way the band members behaved. They decided before that big concert that she was going so they were all brothers and sister smiles with her at the concert knowing that afterwards they were going to sack her out the blue with an open and public letter. This strikes me as the keyboard guy saying "no you're not leaving in the future at your choosing with plenty of notice I'm sacking you now behind your back with the public the first to know" Lastly and this is another sad point by the time of that concert she seems to have fully "found her voice", she was blooming as a young woman, the crowd were eating out of her hand, if they had managed to sort things out who knows what heights of musical joy they'd have reached?

I'm starting to think that not only Tuomas but also Marko was in love with Tarja. And that neither of them (Marko, Tuomas) could handle that. I don't think that was the main reason she was fired, but I think it was why there was so much anger in the firing. Marko naively thought he would stay in touch with Tarja, but he managed to do so only two decades later. Tuomas, Marko and Tarja returned to this drama in their songs. Tarja talks about disappointment and betrayal. Marko sings about unhealed wounds and Tuomas... we all know his songs. Interestingly, Marko's feeling was so strong that he didn't give up, apologized and joined Tarja as her soulmate. After a recent performance for Wish I Had an Angel, when Tarja hugged him, Marko said: "All right then, I've got one (an angel). And thanks for that". You can see how much they enjoy being together. Tarja and Marko are the heroes for me in this story and their friendship is something that has passed the test, but it's real. Tuomas's feeling for her was fanciful, idealistic, possessive and all the more angry. But he was never able to support her or listen to her as Marcelo was. And maybe that's why Tuomas felt his failure.. _With awakening the tears will begin_ _To my everlasting shame silence took me_ I don't think Tuomas and Tarja will ever find their way back together. And even though it's been 20 years, I don't think Tuomas wouldn't feel something again if he saw her now, just like Marko. And I don't mean he's still in love. But I think it would be strong moment for him, maybe too much strong.

Why not say they all loved Tarja and they had to get rid of her to stop them fighting over her. Or even, did you ever notice the looks between Marko and Floor during concerts? Did they have feelings for each other? Maybe that was why Marko really left? NO!!! They were friends and artistic differences got in the way.

I think Marko like her really very much. In addition, he apologized to Tarja in front of the entire production of Raskasta Joulua in 2017. An article with this "small" detail has just been published. I have read or heard several times that he apologized to her. But the fact that he did it in front of everyone? WoW. Respect, Marko.

I was initially reluctant to watch this, partly because it was so long, partly because I had seen some of the interview before but also because of the pain and division that the events of nearly 20 years ago have caused. I did find, though, that listening to the whole interview was enlightening and gave a better picture of WHY people behaved as they did. It does seem that it was going to be a case of WHEN rather than WHETHER the split would take place. There was always going to be some accountability on both sides. The members of the band were great musicians but pretty rubbish at dealing with responsibility and each other. . This is probably a very selfish view but I don't have an issue with NW sacking Tarja. This happens to bands all the time and it set Tarja free to, to me personally, becoming the best artist I have ever had the pleasure to listen to and follow, along with a wonderful band producing wonderful songs and music. NW are still going strong as well so we now have both. The real issue for many people, including me, is HOW they went about it, with the letter and the songs about Tarja that followed. I am sure that the lads have matured a lot since then and will handle any future sackings in a much, much more professional manner. Thank you for your insightful and impartial comments, Kyle and thank you for your hard work Tuuli in translating the full interview.
