Don't forget lights and lasers. I thought there was a cheater on labs phasing through the floor, but it was just a flashlight going through the floor from upstairs offices

@@tim0735 i'm ok with hearing aim in from like, a few feet away, to kind of make up for a general lack of awareness that you have in a game as opposed to real life. But yeah, it should be like, I can hear a dude right on the other side of this open doorway, not all the way across the building.

@@tim0735 you main weapon slot is called “On Sling” so the noise you hear is from a sling. The metal straps sliding and moving or maybe even the metal adjustment band smacking the side of your gun. Also it’s a game, there needs to be balancing and skills to improve.

@@yarbles_ You can 70% of the time, its just that they do some weird shit with the damn audio in this game. I know, because unlike 95% of the Tarkov playerbase, I've fucked around with Unity especially with sounds and how you can tweak the sounds in a scene (which is the area inside of a game), which is the engine this game is running off of. Also, some headsets in the game cant do vertical, idk why they bothered to do something like that.

unrelated but similar in terms of lighting for me: i go to pier on shoreline and the light on inside turns "off" when i take a step in a certain way when looting those filing cabinets. has happened elsewhere too

I experienced this as well in techlight, but for me if you stand in the middle of the store, facing outside of it, and look down to the left, the alarm cuts out. Don't even have to move.

Someone from Russia did a breakdown a few days ago but his English Channel seems to be shadowbanned or something because he hardly pops up on the algorithm, basically gssh is the worse, m32 are slightly better everything else is just slightly better than those, the new headphones they added seem to be the best

I'm general that's one of the harder to emulate. It's also something you must teach yourself from experience it's a but jarring but you can learn what above sounds like

the directional audio is unchanged from last wipe as far as i can tell, because sounds behind you sound the same as in front of you, and that's a hard requirement for directional audio

Audio has just gotten a lot worse so you almost never get audio on anything, if you play arena the audio is last patch so its miles better

Interesting that it seems much better on Factory given the rework this wipe. I wonder if the other maps are just not set up correctly for the new sound model. If so, bit shit to release it without doing the work to make it work properly on each map.

It could be that they deployed it on Factory first for testing and feedback purposes, and then plan to make adjustments to other maps later.

I've been getting horrible audio on Factory, and in the tunnels I've been shot at by PMC AI through multiple walls. Like they'll call out that I'm there and then open fire but they are around several corners from me. Not good.

I had a mate who was literally standing right next to me but was leaning in/out of a doorway to shoot and it would completely change the sound if he was leaning in/out even though I could see him the entire time. From right next to me to being 3-5 rooms away but his distance was still right next to me. Insane.

Day one of the wipe i had random sounds of looting or walking almost every raid and alot of that was ground zero but i havent played ground zero sense then and the audios been better so it might be ground zero

Well this makes perfect sense now, thanks for making this video. I was having a ton of trouble figuring out height of other players and trying to figure out why everyone is so loud! I feel like in the past the occlusion from being inside/outside was better, or at least, most people were more muffled than now, because I keep thinking everyone is right next to me when they are quite far away.

I was digging through a backpack while prone on the floor in woods (i think with comtac2) and a NPC scav snuck through a massive bush right behind me to barrel stuff me before doing a dialogue and killing me. Had no audible sound of his movement whatsoever. BSG absolutely found a way to ruin the audio even more this patch. It's like they looked at that one bunker in reserve and decided the whole game should be broken like it.

if you watched the video, it shows that your own proximity audio can completely muffle other audio as to simulate how it would be IRL. So basically now you have to prioritize when you want to listen for audio vs what you are doing because it can now drone out other audio, for example in the video it shows that if you are walking or running, all your surrounding proximity audio cannot be heard because you can only hear yourself. this changed the game entirely and now we have to change how we play. pretty annoying imo

I'm so impressed that they made the sound a lot more realistic. There's no universe in which you're running full speed and can hear someone walking from 60 meters away like it was pre patch. This change is so much for the better and allows for more movement around the map without sounding off a snare drum every time you take a step. People will complain because it's not perfect and everyone seems to want to have something to complain about at all times about this game. The sound is such a massive improvement though, now on to the lag and desync.

It's really sad when you can't hear someone 10 feet away from you walking or in some cases sprinting. You also really seriously can't hear a lot of grenades. This isn't something to just "complain" about it's a serious issue. The audio in this game has been an issue for years and they kept saying they would fix it when the unity updates came. 1 unity update came and then it took them a year & a half to tell us that the new audio wouldn't work with unity so they had to scrap it and start from scratch again. This wipe we were also supposed to get a unity update and it didn't happen. They now add new audio and it is botched in so many scenarios it's insane. When you can't hear someone full sprinting right outside of your building when you are sitting NEXT TO a WINDOW. we know we have issues. and this depends on if you have binaural audio on or off. They need to set 1 audio source for everyone and then fix the issues. As a veteran player with over 7000 hours I find this to be unbelievably frustrating. I know audio is a big issue in many fps games but tarkov has taken the cake on this issue for years. We need stable audio and we need actual optimizations graphically for this game. It has been so many years and this game is also still the ugliest game graphically I have ever seen. I absolutely love this game & want nothing but success for it but these issues really need to be taken care of.

It's crazy how far you can hear people but I get the worry that people will complain about not hearing anything. Personally I still think that it should be drastically reduced but that's my personal opinion. Sound whoring is crazy, and you can't sneak up on people at all if they're even paying the littlest amount of attention. Regardless of all that, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD REDUCE THE NOISE OF OUR OWN FOOT STEPS AND WIND. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Awesome work Gigabeef! I hope you see this but when i did a quick test with audio just running around and firing.. i noticed that some headsets are overall just quieter.. like the Comtac 5 and 6's can almost be -10db for running and firing (and felt like general volume overall was -10DB) over say the comtac 4's which seem to have the loudest sound for shots and footsteps. *** edit - This could be the reason why the ambient sound is lower.. as the overall DB of the headset is lower but also lower for foot steps and shots *** So while my footsteps are louder, in theory if walking or not moving.. i should be able to hear players better with comtac 4's since they feel very much treble tuned and of course depending on RL headset \ IME's being used, felt better in some situations. I have also been using the GSS for this reason, it feels like the tune is easier to hear players with GSS then comtac's 5 or 6 because the treble tune for hearing footsteps appears very flat from say 2000-8000hz range. Overall mate.. fantastic information and to get this done so quickly and professionally just goes to show how much you care about your content.

Amazing breakdown of the current audio mechanic. One thing it does highlight, however, is just how BSG cannot get direction audio right whatsoever. Been playing Hunt a bit recently and coming back to this game is a struggle when it comes to figuring out where someone is making noise.

I wonder if that audio occlusion on the ramp in Customs is from an old version of the map where maybe that part was covered over, like they removed the object on the ramp but forgot to delete that sound layer in the same location. Really interesting, if BSG address it i would love to find out what the root issue was!

11:02 One way you can get around this shortcoming of the current audio system, is to really learn maps and use context clues to determine where an enemy may be. For example, someone running on the ground office floor versus the top office floor sounds very similar. However, it is quite simple to tell that one is running across wood (ground floor) and the other across broken glass (top floor). This even applies to the second bathroom floor, where you can clearly hear the sound of footsteps on tiles. BSG can't give everyone 7.1 directional audio headsets to have perfect directional audio with, we have to use context clues!

Oh, I understand why I was getting such inconsistent audio in the reserve bunker now. Depending on which doors are closed and left open results in occlusion kicking in and the difference between hearing nothing or everything. I've had Scavs be completely silent on the other side of a door 2m away while wearing Comtac 6s while other times being able to hear them coming from a mile away.

Not sure if you've experienced this at all but I noticed it on a scav run where I found a ULACH helmet in a stash. Putting it on without a headset immediately affected what I could hear. Much like putting on a headset that doesn't allow hearing protection would (Kiver, Altyn, etc) Quick switching it on and off is a noticeable difference in ambient noise heard. Is this because of the new audio system or did it have tags added because there is armor protection over the ears in a way? I'm not sure how headsets work with this either. I don't believe it was like this before. I never remembered hearing that obvious ambient noise cut when putting on a ULACH.

thanks for this, that spreadsheet is getting bookmarked right away :] also very glad to see another helmet mounted headset, the RAC has always been my favourite headset. space saving is huge on them too, we really need to be able to fold most headsets down to 1x1 or 1x2 at this point.

YOoo anyway for you to team up with a Audio expert and try to do a deep dive on headsets in the top 4 id say. I swear there is such a difference between the sharp sounds on the com 4's and the excel as well as environment sounds like noise, rain and the like. I all around really prefer the excell but have not played much at all since the wipe really figure out any differences now. Ive just always noticed a change of certain things between headsets from self running noise and environment and its something no one really has ever gone into as far as i know. With how meticulous you can be i would think it would be interesting for you to experiment with this. thanks for all the nerd work man, love the videos!

I feel like the occlusion change is good, but we will have to deal with some jankiness until (hopefully) they get it right on each map. The vertical audio has always been an issue (especially shoreline resort, roof and ground opponents sound identical) and I would hope they can address it soon.

I died to a scav on Reserve who was standing on a second floor of a White queen and i was looting in the middle of the stairs, between floor one and two (that small ladder between the ground floor and a gym) . I was 2 steps away from him, but he was slightly higher and behind a rail i guess, so it sounded like he was in another building. Even his shots were muffled hard. Some old audio bugs have been fixed, and some new ones were introduced, nothing is changing in that front.

Thank you for this. I honestly think with how complicated the maps are in terms of assets and verticality that any attempt at a detailed occlusion system is a mistake on BSG's end. At the same time I know exactly zero about programming or whether they can even simply it at this point. Outside of the occlusion being ultra wonkey I do agree that it could be the best its been in a long time, but that's not saying much lol. I suppose we should just consider ourselves lucky that they didn't make it worse with their fix 😆

The liberator being purchasable from ragman is such a good thing to have while also being 0.26kg lighter than the comtac 4. The airframe chops being incompatible with headsets while having the comtacs 5 and 6 exfil versions available on peacekeeper makes exfils better than the airframe now.

Ive noticed constantly (especially when running duos) that footsteps can sound oddly compressed? While theyre in this odd compressed state, audio distance is cut by 1/2 to 2/3rds! I have an amp for my irl headphones, I turned it up enough that his voice hurt, yet footsteps on grass only came in around 15m away.... Not good

Thanks for the vid. Hopefully you see this but I think more testing needs to be done. My buddy was wearing sordins and I was wearing liberators and we were outside in the rain and he could hear me walking near him and I was totally deaf to his footsteps. I could hear running but not footsteps. The noise reduction from the liberators totally blocked out the footsteps.

Audio and cheaters are why I play PVE only after not playing for almost two years. Those are in order btw. Audio killed tarkov, not cheaters. Edit: great video as always

Thank you. I really didn't like the sound in this update, even when moving through the fields normally, so I didn't check such nuances myself. I hardly hear a teammate in the game, unlike in the past. Although the teammate, on the contrary, began to hear EVERYTHING. And ambient music makes my head hurt a lot faster. Although in general I like that they continue to work on the game and its aspects.

Giga coming in again with some good vids. I do wonder how these changes will affect people like me who keep their audio lower to avoid ear damage from unsuppressed gunshots up close. Seems like the headsets which lower ambient the most may be best.

So i found a pair of comtac6 as a scav today. It's actually INSANE how good they are compared to the others with the changes they made this patch. When i checked, the headset was going for 100k but i could see it going to 200k when everyone realizes how meta it's going to be for audio

Ground floor area of the offices in New Factory has complete blind spots and some of the worst occlusions ever. You can literally see someone running through the door and hear nothing

I haven't used the regular comtac 6 yet but from my experience the ones made for the exfil kinda suck. While running them for a few pve raids, I felt like I couldn't hear anything over my own movement, even just standing still and turning my character. Had one time a grenade landed directly next to me and sounded like it was about 10 or 15 feet away. Went to hide from the shrapnel around a little corner right next to me and the thing just blew up at my feet. Very unpleasant surprise lol. Not sure if the audio was just bugging out for me or what, but that particular experience made me switch back to the comtac 4 and the 4 just seems to work better for me. Still haven't tried most of the other new headsets yet, so I don't know which I like best yet, but so far the comtac 4s still sound best to my ears. I thought that was interesting, as I really expected the 6 to feel better in practice

Thanks. I've been waiting for a video like this. Surprised how bad slow walking is compared to crouch. Feels like it should be the opposite. I've been playing wrong all wipe. As far as I can tell, the only reason to even use slow walk is if you want to spin in place. Might as well unbind it.

There’s a weird occlusion zone at the bottom of the southern most escalator on ground zero. I had comtac 2’s on and my friend was maybe 5m away and it sounded like he was on the other side of a wall

A human cannot hear someone aim down sights, change magnification, press buttons and zero their sights from 22-29 meters. BSG needs to fix this clown mechanic already! We don't need to have 500 unrealistic audio clues to find people, we have eyes. 🤦

the new occlusion zones are wild between doorways- on factory at the work room where you plant the docs for Prapor's mission it sounds like people are shooting underwater when they are just outside the thin (sheet metal) walls

in stronghold on customs, on the bottom floor where it's open (right by where you plant the poster for prapor) if you step from either half of the building the sound from the other half changes to super muffled, even with los on them. me and my buddy tested it.

@@uhstrology Stronghold audio is GIGA fucked now, holy hell its actually insane how bad the audio can be there now(and it wasnt good last wipe either, people could already walk up the stairs and you not hear them until they got to the very top). I think a lot of the issues stem from when they first added in occlusion zones last wipe, and then continued to fuck with them for .15, and Stronghold is a unique situation as far as occlusion zones go because of its structure. All the different openings, walls, and the fact that the back side is completely open, and the fact the 2nd floor effectively doesnt have walls/a roof has made the occlusion system giga confused.

it would be nice to see testing of distinction in sound profile front and behind. with steam audio sounds from in front sounded different from sounds from behind, which allowed very accurate determination of direction. meanwhile with oculus audio it seems to sound the same, and with only left/right data it becomes impossible to actually determine direction without moving. this should be highlighted exclusively as it was a standout feature tarkov had, but lost

It also seems if your audio isn't at 100% it starts just completely cutting out sounds, instead of lowering their volume.

Comtac6 also reduces more noise than Comtac5 and Liberator when under heavy rain. The difference is significant. So maybe it's going through different channel from the ambient sound?

is anyone else having trouble with the RAPTAR range finder in raid? Mine was working in offline CO OP but not working in live raid. The Display wont turn on, but the laser and IR does.

Tbh they could solve all of this by making convolution audio tracing and better geometry collision, then it would be entirely procedural and would fix a lot of these weird issues with geometry in specific places

It’s much harder to tell if you’re being shot at by someone in an occlusion zone (building) through a window/doorway this wipe, even with an unsupressed weapon.

Grenades audio is bugged you can hear the landing or ground inpact sound when you throw it but cant hear it once it lands on the ground which I find odd

I don't know about anybody else, but I get absolutely ZERO player audio anymore. Like no footstep sounds AT ALL. I've literally watched somebody run up a metal staircase 10 feet away, with absolutely zero noise. This has been the cause of the majority of my deaths so far this wipe. I don't know how you can call this development anymore, because updates almost always remove functionality

Was doing pvp in factory. Was in between floors 2 and 3 on the staircase. Had a guy sprint on 3rd floor right above me and shoot the top of my head 15 times. 0 audio he was there, i love tarkov

Tbh i wish headsets acted more of an in game EQ bc im not gonna lie, ive had more luck with getting better audio by running my game audio through an EQ on my computer and tweaking the freuwncies

Max slow crawl should be dropped down to around 6~8ish meters audible distance instead of just one meter less than full speed crouch walking. You'd still be taking more than 50% movement speed penalty for 50% sound radius. Diminishing returns should be okay though when we get to extreme ratting levels?

Yesterday I lost all audio but my gun shot and the audio of opening my inventory,while fighting the boss on shoreline. A guard ran up behind and voice lined and I never heard it

I think BSG should have new sound effects to represent verticality, like maybe they should echo more or be distinct in a way beyond just muffling

It's crazy that there are videos like this. I would say that no other game has had so many videos like this made over the years just for the audio. But BSG has put a lot of focus on audio from the start. This is extremely important in gaming, but it hasn't been done right for years, even changing the audio engine didn't bring any improvement for the players. Now videos like this are being made to alert players to possible bugs in the sound so that unnecessary deaths can be avoided. I wonder whether the audio problem could be solved more quickly and reliably in a different engine (for example UE5 or 4) and by "professionals". Or whether it is generally very difficult to get "realistic" audio in games.

I now understand that your own audio can muffle the audio of your surroundings as it similarly would in real life. Just another inadvertent perk to being a rat and another nerf to players that run during engagement. can't hear people reposition anymore due to your own PMC running, pretty game changing imo.

i have been having issues with steps not registering aswell, which led me to this video, i was looting USEC camp and brother just walked ring up on me and i only heard him coming because he grazed a bush, but it was too late.

@@humble_ape Yes and no. A guy did a video testing real headsets and running and what not. It is about 40m you can hear someone running irl. It all depends on the surface tbh because something like glass you could probably hear someone walk on that from 80m+ away. Some actions like ADS are almost silent and should not be heard from 20m away though.

I would also like to add that the 60m is the hearing threshold where sound starts to play. It still will be kind of quite until they are a bit closer. Like he said in the video and showed too it can be hard when other sounds are playing too.
