The University of Montana Percussion Ensemble directed by Dr. Robert LedBetter performs Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer arranged by Robert LedBetter. The performance took place as part of the Spring Percussion Concert on March 11, 2016.

WOW, am thrilled. Not sure how this popped up on my KZbin selection but boy am I glad it did as ELP IS one of my all time Prog rock bands Ever. I have always imagined having some of their music performed by orchestras but nothing like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I saw ELP at the Mar y Sol Fest in Puerto Rico while attending college there in 1972. Watching this video made my day. Grats to the University of Montana Percussion Ensemble.

Amazing. This is probably one of the most difficult pieces to play on any instrument. This ensemble is incredible.

Having played in percussion ensemble love the marimba parts and vibe as the melody was a nice touch. Percussion ensemble is so underrated. I do miss those days. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 to a great performance of some EXCELLENT ELP.

AWESOME! Excellent performance by the MPE of this complex and relatively obscure work (which happens to be one of my favorites ever since I first heard it in 1980). Really nice guitar solo at 4:35, and I heard a few Kieth licks in the synth solo around 10:40 (nice!). The set player is really accomplished--yeah, man! And solid job on bass. And all that precision mallet work. So cool!!!! Dr. LedBetter this arrangement had my heart soaring! You've captured the composition so well--I've always imagined it arranged for PE and this didn't disappoint. Great preparation by everyone. Wow! Congratulations to all the performers--you've really shown your school and your department in a fine light! BRAVO!!!

ELP are always going to be controversial to the extent that they were ahead of their time - IMO. Look at Paul Desmond's "Take Five" (Dave Brubeck quartet), "What??? This is not a 4/4?" Somehow, they made mixing timing and key signatures seamless. Respect.

ELP was 3 guys. Saw them do this song in concert live. Now, here we have about 15 players with a conductor and they can't even come close to what 3 players, Kieth, Greg, and Carl could do live on stage, not to mention they are the original writers and arrangers of such a complex piece. If you studied music, the rhythmic changes alone can take a few months to master, 5/4 with the triplets, and wide variations of rhythmic changes through out, not to mention the complex melodies. Hats off to a good preformance, but nothing can touch the 3 original players. I lucked out as I was late to the concert and so we got vacated seats: front row, dead center. So close to Greg Lake when he sang you almost had to dodge the spit from his mouth when he sang. Comparing ELP to the utter junk we call music (rap) today is a complete discrace to the human race, have people lost all lost with the reality of what music is?

Stai mettendo a confronto un intera orchestra con un ensemble di xilofoni una batteria minimal e tre tamburi. Capisci che è come paragonare un intera flotta navale con una barchetta a vela... Qua devi apprezzare invece come,con un solo strumento, siano riusciti ad eseguire l'intera opera in tutti i suoi registri.

Mi stai dicendo che un intera orchestra riesce a cogliere meglio tutte le sfumature,e i chiaro scuri rispetto ad una batteria di xilofoni. Sono d'accordo ma, hai detto una cosa alla Catalano,ovvia.
