That was absolutely amazing using a church pipe organ for such a masterpiece of contemporary music. In the early 1970s, a group I was playing keyboards in tried a few of ELPs tunes, but nothing like this! Congratulations on completing such a huge piece of music with such a different instrument than what Keith Emerson used. Bravo!

10:14 my favourite part, i love how angry everything sounds, it's so powerful and elegant at the same time, truly a noble instrument. Also, earlier in the song i heard a hissing sound, i think the organ demands a blood sacrifice.

Bravo! 👏 This wonderfully melds musical favorites of mine and conjures up great memories: I got Tarkus as a birthday present from my brother when it came out (I was 12), and I wore that album out. At that time I had started accompanying my sister to her church organist gigs as page turner and gained my love and awe of the pipe organ. And, yes, I once accidentally stepped on the high pedal while reaching and got a vivid reaction from her.

For years I have thought hearing this and other ELP pieces played on a pipe organ would be cool and I finally got one. I really enjoyed this. I have heard many piano transcriptions and recently a nice acoustic guitar transcription which I have loved but on the pipe organ with bass pedals is really special. I have listened to and loved Tarkus for 50 years. I happy to see young people interested in ELP’s music. You played it beautifully and I imagine that Keith would have approved.

I was a big fan of ELP in my day (that makes me old). I grabbed this album as soon as it first came out, around 1971 I believe. I thought then, and still do believe this song, the whole Tarkus side A, was awesome and among their greatest achievements. You have have done justice to the song. I kept waiting for some spot where I was going to say, "Oh well, nice try but you messed up this or that" but it didn't happen. This was really a joy to listen to. Thanks so much.

This is fantastic. You play this with such respect for the original material - I know Keith would have been proud!. You also have done a masterful job of really coaxing the most out of the limited resources of a small but very well-balanced instrument. Is the specification the same as listed in the OHS database online? If so, bravo. I know a lot of organists who couldn't have done as well with an instrument 3 times that size.

In awe of your ability to hear and transcribe all the parts. Love the stop choices that show how this king of instruments was probably the inspiration for what Keith brought forth on the Hammond and Moog. Amazed at how you worked through the latency and lack of percussive attack which comes with the nature of a pipe organs.

From 4:12 did you consider using a principal 4' along with a twelfth 2 2/3" ? It seems to me Keith chose to use two oscillators for the RH passage, tuned a fifth apart, with the lower one (the tonic) more dominant (pun unintended). Impressive interpretation, rendition and generally very appropriate registration choices, I thought. Very nicely done.
@GottenhimfellaАй бұрын
The RH run at 5:37 is (to me) almost impossible to decode. As well as being virtually unplayable. You came so close to nailing it ! (I certainly think you had the right intent) Respect. I expect the touch is heavier on that console than on a Moog, also....
@owentellinghuisenorganistАй бұрын
Thanks for enjoying! The short answer is yes, if I were on a larger organ. I hear the fifth on the album as well but unfortunately this organ lacks any subtle mutations that would work with the dynamic contrasts I had in mind. I also hear enough of a contrast between the tone of that solo vs. the one in Mass, where I do use the mutation registration, that reflects in my registration choices as well. Yes, that RH run is very difficult, and live performance being live performance... it's certainly a bit harder to translate to this instrument from the Hammond or Moog but I'm very glad you enjoyed the finished product!
