I personally spread all cards at random and get the person getting their cards read to pick and choose intuitively and put them into the position that they feel is right, so in essence, they are the ones deciding the orientation of the cards themselves, and we won't know until it's open. To date, the readings have been very accurate.

That sounds like a great approach! I also have the person pick each card for the positions, though any reversals they intuitively turn as they are shuffling. I've always felt it was very accurate when the client is directly involved, rather than the tarot reader shuffling and laying out the cards! Take care, Wray

So interesting - thank you. I think what drives me nuts is when the reader has most of the cards reversed and I just think they've picked the deck up the wrong way in the first place and then to top it all it's an unusual looking, ornate deck with lots of bright colours so I can't tell what's what unless we're told.. Oh the joys of being a learner.... 😊

I always used the same method..the consultant cooses the cards..and I DO NOT BELIEVE in reverse meanings..the negative idea behind a card..is THE PLACE the cards are in the spread..so..it all depends on the decision we make -deciding beforehand..the sunny side and the dark side of the situation..

I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter whether reversals are used or not. Reversals can allow for more complex readings but that doesn't translate to better readings automatically. If you take a more holistic view of the situation, then in a sense you can't go wrong with or without reversals-the client will go to the right reader, who uses the right deck and spread and reading method for the right answer at the right time the client needs it. Having said that, we obviously all have our preferences and opinions, and in a way you actually can "go wrong", if you do something that doesn't make sense to you. I definitely believe that intentionally aiming for half the deck to be reversed is a poor system. To me that effectively says you need 156 cards to do a reading, and if that's the case, you probably don't have a clear enough intuition that 78 cards, with an endless amount of shuffling procedures and spreads and interpretations, aren't good enough. Lastly, I actually find that while mastering reversals and employing them effectively is more advanced than not incorporating them (ditto this video), they're so heavily promoted that they often mask the opposite by merely feigning sophistication. Not a handful of readers started their craft using reversals but did away with them as their experience grew and their ability improved (though bringing them back at a later time is also common, if they feel they need the extra nuance with their now more refined skills).

Hi Wray! This was very interesting. I have been reading for many years and so, for the most part, I really don't do reversals. I get enough intuitive info since I use multiple correspondences to help guide the reading. That said, I will use them in two instances: if I am doing a reading for myself or for a client and there is an extremely high emotional factor being brought to the table. If the reading is for myself and I feel that my own confusion would lead to interpretation bias I will do reversals. (I separate the deck into seven piles and pick one for the reversals.) For a client, adding in reversals (the same method of seven splits and one reversed) just helps me get clearer since their energy is so scattered and they have put all that emotional chaos it into the deck. And yes...it is a hot topic in the tarot community, but it really shouldn't be. As you said, the practical rule of thumb is if you are new, don't use them. If you are seasoned, then add them into the mix if you feel it is good to do.

Well I’m new to tarot readings, I started doing it to myself and I don’t see how could I not read the reversals even thought that is recommended to beginners. I’m not that intuitive so i just have to take the message as it is. For example I was doing a love reading having a specific person in mind. The Cards I pulled out for the future included the lovers in the reverse. Now if I flipped that card the message would be very very different. So I wouldn’t be able to trust that. If it came reversed it has the right message of whatever it is.

Thank you so much for this information! I do readings on line and try to impart the client's energy into the cards through meditation. Since I'm a lefty, I use my right hand and imagine the client cutting the deck. I clear the deck between each reading, but hadn't put all the cards in the upright position. I'm definitely going to add that to my practice! thanks again! I love your channel!

I didn't use reversals this time, which was odd for me. But, the readings seemed very clear. The next reading I do, I'll add reversals and see how the message comes through. Hi my dear. The points is that even though ive tried not to include reversals anymore after many years of using the. I realize that right side is great but the reversal adds maybe some detail that was missing before.. Sometimes the reversal is just whispering some detail but sometimes it is actually screaming the answer at you. I am not that new to Tarot but I haven't done many readings for others. i did, however, do a reading with reversals for a friend of mine a few months ago and the whole thing felt chaotic and unsafe because so many reversals came up in it. I felt overwhelmed by it and couldn't trust myself to interpret it. Since then, i have stopped using them!! However, I do like your suggestion of having the client reverse a few because it certainly would make it more manageable, but for now I am not going to use them until I am more practised and 'seasoned'!! Hi Wray. I have a question. You client shuffle the upright deck and he/she put some cards in a reverse position then hand it out to you. So when the card is on the table as "he put it" the question is: what do you consider reversal? Reversal to you (as you see it) or to the client (reversal to his position)? Actually it's kind of the same question you made to us. I'm curious how do you read it. Thanks for your answer in advance :)

Hi Marina! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, that's exactly what I do - I say "pick a card that represents the past" or "pick a card that represents the outcome" - whatever position the card is for - and we do that until all of them are chosen. They pick them individually from the cards laid out in an accordion fashion on the table (after they have shuffled and reversed several cards). In this way, I feel they have 100% chosen that card for that position. I hope that helps! Wray

Hi. What if the author of the tarot/oracle deck have the reversals meanings in the book and says that the deck should be mixed for reversal? Should we follow the authors vision or not read the reversal? Thank you

Hi JP, in my opinion it doesn't matter what deck you use or what the author recommends, it's always important that a reader makes the decision about whether to read reversals or how to read reversals, if they choose to do so. I personally always start with my deck upright and have the client invert several cards intuitively. Or you can have them cut the deck into 3 or 4 piles and reverse one pile then shuffle them into the remainder of the cards. In my mind, reversals aren't helpful to your overall reading if you're just beginning tarot or if you haven't got a grasp on what any of the cards might mean reversed. I hope this helps, Wray
