Is that knife and axe legal to carry in the UK? I thought you could only have stuff like that if you were on private property?

This camping trip was carried out on our private permission. The landowner provides the drum for off the ground fires too. Ground fires are not allowed here. The use of knives axes etc is perfectly legal for this kind of activity on private property. I would not carry an axe in public woodland. It’s going to be very difficult to provide a genuine reason for use then.

I have the exact same Trangia set up - I've actually returned to it after many years of trying other options. If all you do is boil water then there are better solutions, but for actual cooking, I think the Trangia is hard to beat. Tip on the seasoning: Do it at home in a hot oven. Spread a high smoking temperature oil like flax, or sunflower oil at a pinch, evenly over the inside surface, wait ten minutes or so and the wipe most of it off until it's almost dry. Stick it in a hot oven for an hour or so, remove and let it cool completely. Repeat this four or five times and you will end up with an even, very dark brown/ black layer that is as good a non stick surface as you'll find anywhere.

Speaking as a chef, you are better to season your pan with vinegar, baking soda and water and boil for ten minutes at home then oil it and place in an oven at around 160 for an hour. What you have done there is congeal the the oil hence the dark colouring. Another good idea when cooking is to use clarified butter rather than oil. It’s healthier and tastier and does not burn. To clarify butter you simply melt it and skim of the clear fats leaving the milk solids at the bottom and discarding, eggs cooked in this is amazing on a slow cook 👍🏻

Hi Paul, great video as always! For the non stick surface it’s best to do it in an oven at home first. Also when you apply the oil you have to wipe away almost all of the oil or it will leave a sticky layer on top and won’t be non stick. Same as a stainless steel pan used in kitchens.

Good video mate, great to see a bit of bushcraft skills being practiced. As for the inane comment regarding carrying an axe and knife, I've set that one straight...... You're perfectly entitled to carry an axe in a public place providing you have a reasonable excuse - in this video, camping - zero questions. Same goes for the knife........ Glad to see the agitators out as per. ATB mate

Ooh, was just out in this bivy this weekend. Also brought the sea to summit 15D poncho tarp but ended up not using it. I think its a great setup! I keep my sleeping pad inside and roll it up like a cowboy roll and strap it under my pack. Saves tons of space and is super simple to set up/roll up. Now in the summer heat i recon i will use the hammock or tent though..! Great video as always.

You used a couple of items I know quite well. I used a Trangia # 27 on a lot of canoe trips over a lot of years. 1st time I got laughed at and as the trips passed more and more of the guy's had the same stove. I got the last laugh at them when the finally woke up and got theirs. I like to use a lower flame when cooking , the simmer ring works wonders. One other item that's been with me even longer is the UCO Candle lantern. Mine is the Brass one and unlike yours I have to unscrew the bottom to remove the candle holder to light the wick , then reinsert it. Might ever call mine a dinosaur , age wise.

Nice little camp there Paul. The Trangia lid pans are crap as a frying pan, they're just too thin. The Trangia 22cm frypan however is much better as it's made from thicker material, and machined. Cheaper than the Jetboil ones too. I've had mine a while and wouldn't be without it.

Great vid. One small point: the Hard Anodized (HA) Trangia frying pan isn’t non-stick like Teflon, it’s just a bit less sticky than standard aluminium. The eggs are probably going to stick a bit no matter what, and you can’t really season a HA pan. Unlike cast iron or standard alu, the HA surface has almost no holes - it’s not porous, so the baked oil isn’t really going to do the job. My advice: get the non-stick frying pan. It’s so much easier to use.

Dad camping! Love it :-) Now, to season your pan - if it isn't a non-stick already, you can do it just like in your video, but use lard, not veg oil. Veg oil can work, but goes past smoke point and burns too easily. The pan does look like it is non-stick already though?
