A tarp tent setup is great if you find yourself in a wide open space with little to no trees. If you're unable to hitch a ridgeline the tarp tent is a game changer.
With an integral ground sheet you'll be able to keep all your kit & equipment dry, there's a layer between you and the exposed ground & there's plenty of room for you to bunker down.

Those side flappy panels can even be untied at night and bought together to form a rudimentary door on the front for a little more shelter .. that's what I do with my 3 x 3 dd .. works a treat ❤

The floor will collect rain or condensation as it sticks out past cover. I'd pull the floor back and stake it separately under cover.

If you do yourself a dakota out front you can use the spoil from that to create a little bank underneath the floor at the front, leaf litter around sides just to soak up any draughts that try to sneak under the fly.

Hook a poncho hood over the top of your pole and stake it out front to create a door flap.

I use an external bipod to free up the interior space. It's not that much more work, however, trekking poles are too short so just have to cut another pole and make both long enough to reach. External tripods and quadripods would do but really aren't necessary. I add a bug net and poncho vestibule. Really good video.

An original set up with a floor, many thanks. It'll stop water running under the walls in heavy rain, especially if you fold up the front portion of the floor and support it with a couple of stakes. Perhaps you could use a taut line hitch on the front guy to make tensioning easier if the tarp stretches after set up. I try to avoid walking on my tarp to try and extend its working life.

I like the setup, but I would change it a bit. Mostly because of the extended ground sheet. I wouldn’t connect the corner loops with the 2nd loops of the ground part. This way you can pull the middle in towards the pole in bad weather. This combined with a single forward line from the side flaps would give better coverage, less problems with inward rain and no central guy out in the place of a fire.
@hallstewart
@hallstewart Жыл бұрын
I'd also be concerned about rain collecting on the exposed part of the ground sheet and pooling. I think the suggestion above is possibly the solution
@TheBikerDodge

I've not seen it done this way before. I'm impressed. I've had a 3x3 for years, not sure if it will be big enough. I agree with the comments regarding rainfall on the ground sheet. I would also say that I never walk on the tarp. If there are any sharp stones under it that you haven't noticed it could very easily be punctured.
@Jonsoh811
@Jonsoh811 8 ай бұрын
@@TheBikerDodgewell it all depends on your size. For my 1.9 meters, I need a 3.5x3.5 tarp. It is also essential do tie out the open side first to prevent rain coming in. Biggest problem, atleast for me in freezing weather, is condensation inside. The closed end/sides need to be opened to mitigate this somewhat. Especially since I used my jacket to close the front.

Just so you know, I did set this up and I'm loving it! It went up in under 5 minutes, very easily! The only thing's I would add are these: 1) No!!!! Clearly this is not a configuration to use if your expecting rain! Come on folks, the front is WIDE OPEN! BACK OFF! It's good config! 2) If you are concerned about possible rain than simply attach a length of paracord to the two front floor tie-down's, lift it up and you should be good. Thank you for sharing this one! I'm loving it! As I said it's great for clear nights where you want to enjoy the stars!

Or use a shorter pole and put it at the front to have a larger overhang, or keep it in the middle and pull the front down to help close the opening. Many variations of this can be made with some thought.

Hi might I suggest you add a small sheet of clear plastic painter drop cloth to your tent large enough to cover the opening. Placing a fire 3 ft or 1 meter away will convert it from an open tarp tent into a super shelter. Obviously a reflector behind the fire would be preferred to focus as much of the fire's heat onto the shelter as possible. The plastic sheet only need to be taller and wider than your opening. The additional weight would be very minimal. Another addition that could help is using a disposable emergency blanket as a rear wall heat reflector. I should add as a caviot that I use a lavvu but have used this method with it down to Temps from 32-17 degrees Fahrenheit. That the coldest it gets in my area on extremely rare occasions maybe once in a decade or longer. I slept through most of the night only waking twice to feed the fire.

Shelters are quick and simple to build when you have a tarp with you. So often we see people building shelters,with stones and logs, or digging extravagant under ground hobbit type dwellings, when all they really need is a tarp! I bought a DD tarp many years ago, and use it occasionally for a quick bit of shelter during summer months. It’s been great. I have a 3 season lightweight tent which serves for everything else, what’s all this nonsense we see, with people digging and chopping and building? Have they nothing better to do? Thanks for the vid. B

Hello.. Nice video. Tarp is the easy way, and tent has some more advantages... I want to buy a tent for 1 person but i hate to need time to setup it (sometimes). Some tents are fast setup for 1 person but are very small so you cant put your equipment inside. So to buy a strong tarp is a nice idea. What about the mosquitos at night? how can make a net at the door?
