I'm glad I found this video, that's probably the biggest handweaving project I've ever seen and it's impressive as all hell. You really wove yourself a whole blanket!!

Your blanket is beautiful Andy. I read somewhere that if you're concerned about your. Fold put a stripe on it. And that's exactly where your stripes were, on the fold. It's a lovely tartan.

Fabulous tartan blanket, thankyou for taking the time to explain how you did it, its hard to find any information on tartan and seeing as I have suggested tartan weaving for our next guild meeting its helped me a lot!

That fold turned out really nice! Barely any draw in! Beautiful! I know it was a frustrating project but the end result is amazing.
@curmudgeon668 жыл бұрын
To me the fold is still visible, but not prominent. One thing that helps is that there is a green stripe between the reds just at the fold.

Thanks to you Andy, I am actually planning a family tartan. I am making it from scratch using family history for the colors. I am registered with Scottish Tartan Registry. I will share once I get the hang of how to use the design registry and do another RH weaving project for chair upholstery. bjr

Looks amazing. it must have been tedious keeping the blocks balanced. Bet you are relieved it is done. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your projects and giving me the confidence to carry on weaving I am using your double weave video and enjoying working out the process.

....for shame! I could at least say.... Good job Andy. VERY good job. As I design this family tartan, I will be asking you questions! I won't be making a blanket but pillows for each member of the family so that all can have a bit of fabric. bjr

thank you Barbara, I know you understand how much concentration goes into doing a big tartan like this.

You must be really pleased with that tartan blanket. It looks terrific! Were you satisfied with the fold? (No close up of that, but it looked just fine.) congratulations. I continue to learn from your videos, thank you.

my father wants me to weave him a tartan to make a kilt, would you recommend doing that in a table loom?
@curmudgeon668 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend a table loom for tartan to make a kilt. Here are a few of my reasons: How wide can you weave on your table loom. Measure from his waste down to the center of his knee, that is how long the kilt must be, is your table loom (after draw in) able to weave that wide? You must have at least 8 yards of fabric that wide, can you get 8 yards on the wind up beam? You will be changing the threading using your hands instead of your legs as on a floor loom, this will make it much slower to do weave. In any case you must be using a fairly thin wool yarn, much thinner than I used on this blanket, most table looms wont have enough heddles to be able to weave the needed number of ends for the tartan. Tartan looks great, and its "just twill" so is easy to weave . . . BUT counting the threads to get it exactly balanced is a major pain in the seat of the pants (to put it mildly). Sewing a kilt is a specialty bit of work, not saying you can't do it, just saying do your research to understand what is involved before you tackle this project.

What sort of investment do you think I would be looking at to have a setup like yours one day Andy? I am already quote the yarnsmith, but watching these videos makes me want to weave! The blanket came out absolutely gorgeous!
@curmudgeon668 жыл бұрын
Jessica, I spent a small fortune on all the various bits of equipment and other sundry stuff. My total investment was around $5k. But for me it is not so much the cost as the ability to do the things that I want to do with it. It is my hobby, and my innterest.
@gypsyjunklady8 жыл бұрын
I actually am not at all surprised at the dollar amount. I expected in the 4 to 5 thousand range. I think it's lovely and worth every penny. Do you mind me asking what brand of loom you use?

What name would apply to this Leask pattern you just made? Is it "modern" Leask? It does not seem to be "Ancient" Leask, n'est ce pas? St. Norbert Abbey is a Roman Catholic monastery located in De Pere, Wisconsin. Is it a link to the monastery that sparked your interest in home weaving? In any event, it is very wonderful is to be able to understand clearly every word in your pronunciation. Much nicer to my ear than the Scottish accent in the various Scottish KZbin videos where the presenter speaks too fast with his Scottish accent and not much concerned if we follow his demonstration (often more simplified than yours). Your video is the best I've watched on tartan weaving. Kudos.
