Thank you for your honest opinion. Tarte as a brand is really hard to purchase in Europe. I would have to order from the US without ever seeing their products in person. So I am really interested in a brand review. Maybe a “best/worst products.

Ok, total theory. But I bet Tarte thought the Clay Play 1 was going to be HUGE. And they sold a CRAPLOAD of them to Ulta and Sephora and then it didn’t sell. So Ulta and Sephora are concerned, put the first version for sale at 50% off to get rid of inventory and basically negotiate with Tarte to do something with the rest of the order. So Tarte, who hasn’t actually pressed all of the palettes yet, goes back, changes out a few shades based on which pigments they have in inventory, calls it Clay Play 2 and slam out a slightly new palette to both retailers hoping to use up the rest of their packaging and get some new sales.

That’s a pretty good theory and an incredibly terrible business practice. I don’t feel like they promoted Clay Play as much as they could have in the first place. As someone with a marketing background, some products just take longer to catch on. But it was catching on. And it was gaining some noise over the past few months. And they just took it away. Instead of keeping a good quality palette and promoting the heck out of it, they revamped it in a crappy way. It’s so bizarre!

Stephanie Marie Agree! I’ve seen the Clay Play in so many people’s best of 2017 videos. And for good reason. I feel like brands (and retailers) may be getting unrealistic in what “success” looks like when they launch a product. If it doesn’t sell out instantly, it wasn’t good seems to be the mentality.

Very good review! Tarte is one of my favorite brands. I have the Clay Play 1 and really enjoy it. I think I got mine on sale direct from their website. I will be passing on the CP 2. I'm interested in any reviews you do on Tarte products. I have a few of the smaller eyeshadow palettes and have bought a few for gifts as well, when they're on sale. I find their packaging quite intriguing.

I would love to see a Best and worst of Tarte! I’ve had good luck with most of what I’ve tried from Tarte, and I received the Clay Play palette volume 1, and I definitely love it! 👍🏻 I just don’t understand their thinking with the Volume 2 though, it’s definitely not what I’ve come to expect from Tarte, and I don’t blame anyone who purchased it for being VERY disappointed! 👎🏻 Another great and thorough review Stephanie, thank you! 😊👍🏻

Your absolutely right about the highlighter! I bought this palette in the Sephora store, I got in the car and opened the packaging and the highlighter was in pieces and coming out of the tray. I went back into the store and they exchanged it, we checked the new palette before I left the store. However, I am careful with the highlighter because it is such a soft formula... I also was a little confused on why Tarte would use the same packaging with the same shade names. I thought that was a bit tacky and cheap and obviously confusing.

I have both clay play 1 and 2, and like yours, the highlight in clay play 2 was already cracked when I received it. It wasn’t broken all over, just a couple of cracks. I sprayed Mac Fix+ on them, smoothed it out and let it dry for a few days. It’s like brand new now. Totally agree with you that the clay play 2 is disappointing! They are magnetic pans so I switched out the shades and just use one of the palette. 😊😊

Stephanie have you encountered any pallettes that would have everything that you suggested as improvement on clay play one, I totally agree with you on that! I have been on the hunt for a good travel pallete for a long time now and it seems like there's always something missing or wrong with the combinations. Ideally travel pallets should have 3 eye shadow look combinations, 1 or 2 blush options, 1 highlighter and one matte bronzer so that it can also used for contouring (or when combined with a highlighter as a shimmery bronzer). Eye looks should not be all similar tones but to provide a good combinations of shimmers and dark mattes and transition mattes as well. I had one Too Faced pallete like that but now it's getting too old to use. I can't find anything like it and hate having too many stuff on my counter as I'm getting ready and I definitely don't need separate pallettes for contouring, blushes, bronzers or highlighters as I see a lot of on the shelves.

I would probably buy ABH Modern again if it goes on sale - same for Too Faced Peaches and Cream Palette. Great quality and I love the colors. Timeless palettes for me.

I got the Clay Play 2 as a gift from a friend who had it shipped to her, then shipped to me and it arrived fully intact. I do really find myself missing a dark shade for the outer corner and to line with. I like the blush and the addition of a few shimmers. I haven’t hardly touched the highlighter because of the visible glitter in it...just not my thing. I still like the Clay Play 1 better.

There's no need to apologize for an honest candid review. It's not negative to point out what's blatantly wrong with the palette or note concerns such as the shady fact they are using old Palettes with old shades and some new ones to get customers' money -yet customers who don't call Their hand on such practices result in brands continuing to put out subpar items. It's deplorable , lazy on their part and it demeans them as a high end brand Influencers shouldn't be afraid to speak up fearing viewer retribution or even brand clap back when a palette had so many issues as this one does. Or really ever fear it no matter the brand or item. By being complacent with our support of brands, they will Not work to be and do better for clients. I deserve better than this. I don't put up with this kind of treatment in my life day to day so why should I allow a large brand to treat me as a stupid or weak person unwilling to speak up when I'm not happy with their product

I picked up this palette in person at Sephora but haven't tried it out yet. I don't have the first one. For me I like the added blush and highlight, I personally don't need a contour and more than one bronzer. Plus, I prefer the addition of the shimmer shades, to an all matte palette. I think the shade Dune (I think that's the one?) would make an excellent contour b/c it's a cool ashy shade, which is what I like to contour with when I do. It's really weird that the shade names are the same, really weird. Great review/comparison! xoxoxo

I would love to see a all around review on Tarte products! I only own the Flirt palette and it's ok. It seems like to me that Tarte eyeshadow's are very dry and powdery. I've seen so many people like the the In Bloom palette so much that I've considered getting it but haven't quite decided yet. There is alot of mixed reviews on the Toasted palette that I'm not sure if it's worth it. You look and sound like you feel better! You look beautiful :)

I would love to see your top and bottom 5 from Tarte. I liked your suggestion of how they could have re-done the shades, (adding a blush to the lower three biggest pans; a universal contour; and a highlight replacing one of the big shadows instead of the bottom pans) it would have been a MUCH better way to tweak this palette. Then you would still get to keep the darker matte shades for brows and deeper eye looks. And just one light shimmer eyeshadow as a topper for the matte shades. It would be perfect! 😄

I watched ur video on the first one and found out it was on sale and went to Ultas site to buy it I saw the second one and I was so confused when I read the names of the shadows while trying to decide if I wanted the second one instead and why it was made like U mentioned. But I did get the first one and Super Happy I did. Get it espresso on sale. I hadn’t really decided if I wanted it and had it not been on sale and I had not watched ur video. I wouldn’t have gotten it. I love a lot of Tarte palettes and would try so much more if I could. But this is the craziest thing I have ever seen. I can’t remember where I saw it, but I read Tarte respond to a comment about the identical packaging and they said something to the effect of “we wanted to keep it consistent since this is the volume 2.” In other words, I think they are phasing out the all-matte original and this one is taking its place. Hence all the deep discounts on volume 1... which I think is a shame since I prefer volume 1 over volume 2. I own both. Volume 2 is my “oh crap, I’m late for work and don’t need to think about what to grab.”

I heard from another subscriber that if you peel off the Play 2 label, the Play 1 label is underneath. So yeah, they reused old palettes and didn't tell anyone but sold them as new. Shady!!!

Hi! If you're ever curious about a foundation match, you can check my foundation shade matches link in my description box or bookmark it so you can check it periodically (bc I update it with every foundation I try). But yes, that's the shade I wear and I find it to work really well!

That is soooo bazaar that they cranked out a new palette with everything identical (packaging and names) and you can't get it on their website. Wonder if it was a Sephora exclusive, hence the same everything. It makes you think .....what is going on that Tarte is willing to ruin their reputation with this awkward new palette. Sounds like there is a shipping/packing issue. I do find it weird that they used the same exact packaging with names. However, I love this palette. I am very fair and this is my perfect every day makeup palette. I can use every single shade in this palette where with the first palette I could not. It’s a bummer that they had such terrible shipping/packing issues but I don’t think that takes away from the actual palette. This is by far one of my favorite palettes ever! Also the palette is available on the tarte site.

The mystery palette! It would appear someone really made a mess of what was suppose to be a new palette. I ordered the Clay Play 1 from the Tarte 70% sale, its suppose to arrive Tuesday. I watched another video that pointed out the names/packaging being the same. You'd think Tarte would at least make some comment on social media with some explanation since so many have purchased this bad palette. Now I'm off to see your videos on the first palette.

I wish I could help you more. I think I'm the ONE KZbinr that doesn't have the KVD S&L. 😁 For me personally, one all matte neutral multitasking palette is plenty. If the S&L does all the things the CP could do (if you've seen my videos on those), then I think you're covered!

Stephanie, I was the one that it took 3 tries to get the pallette come NOT shattered (we chatted on Twitter). That being said three days later the highlighter just crumbled. Literally, got my fan brush, ran it across the highlighter and it crumbled. Probably I blessing in disguise bcz that highlighter had visable glitter in it and I don't like those kinds of highlights. I returned mine, and like you just kept the one Sephora credited me for. However, I DO NOT reach for this pallette at all. The Clay Play 1, I use everyday. Bad, bad, bad quality. I LOVE Tarte as a brand but this has kinda rubbed me the wrong way now. Especially, since they're not owning up to it! As for your video suggestion, I like the one - brand best and worst of videos! ~Carla

That was such an accurate review for such an inaccurate product. I wish you could send your video to a product manager at Tarte! How can they use the same name for entirely different colors...Onyx, really? And when you held up the stickers on the back side by side, it looked like the Clay Play 2 sticker was a little larger and had been put on top of the original. Thanks for all your input, it is much appreciated. I am happy with my original Clay Play, and will use shimmers from other palettes. I'd like to see your top 5 or 10 "go to" Tarte products and your bottom "avoid" Tarte products. Thank you!

Such a shame that the Clay Play 2 highlight keeps arriving broken. I was so excited when I heard it was coming out. But I thought it would have different packaging. Clay Play 1 is one of my favorite packaging and the palette is my everyday HG. I wanted CP 2 to have shimmers and blush to pair with CP 1. Yes, I definitely grab other shadows, blush and highlight from other palettes now without any problems. Just wished they had handled the packaging and the shade names differently. Oh, and given us more new shades!

My highlighter was broken too!! So sad 😭. I wasn’t sure what I should do because I don’t want to have to keep going to the post office to return in. Is there a way to repack it for it to stay? It’s a beautiful highlighter.

You can repress broken shadows with rubbing alcohol. But this highlighter is very glittery and powdery and soft and breaks on people even when not in shipping. You could try. I find it highlights any texture on my face bc it’s so apparent. Good luck!

Loved your review on this! While Tarte makes a lot of great products, it seems like this particular one completely misses the mark. Maybe it was something rushed for holiday? You brought up excellent points. This will be a pass for me, but I may have to check out the first one!

I also bought the Clay Play 2 Palette hoping for an all in one travel palette and am disappointed, but for slightly different reasons. First, this is a HEAVY palette which normally isn't a huge deal, but not great for travel. I'm mostly disappointed in the lack of a good dark liner color. I've tried using the darkest color as a liner and it was marginal at best. Also, the highlight and the lightest eye shadow are chunky, as you mentioned, and I'm not wild about that, especially with highlighters. Overall, this palette is boring, uninspiring and heavy. I don't have the first one, the lack of any shimmer colors kept me away as I like a bit of both in my shadows.

I had the same issue with Sephora with a Natasha Denona palette! There was nooooo protective packaging at all! There was just one semi-shattered shadow, luckily. But come on Sephora, how hard is it to use bubble wrap correctly???

I love my clay play 1 but seeing your ordeal and how Tarte treated clay play 2 has definitely made me rethink Tarte as a whole. I won’t be purchasing this palette. Thanks for your review. Definitely makes me stick my decision to pass on it.

I would love to see a top 5 and bottom 5 cuz I either love or hate Tarte stuff. I would die without the radiance drops--I literally stalked them til they went public 😂 but some of their metallic shadows are horrible for creasing (unlike Morphe).

The shadows in mine arrived intact but the box was completely unglued and open... just a sheet of cardboard

I just went to the Tarte website and you can't find either palette there at all. You can only find volume 2 on Ulta. A Google search does take me to a page at the Tarte website where it's $20 but it says it's not available I'm speaking about volume 1 ...... hmmmmm

The only thing that makes any sense is that the palette is a companion to the first one, hence the same names. What you’re gaining is a blush, highlight and shimmer shades to go with an all matte palette and contours. Seems excessive but I’ll just stick to the original and not even bother with the second one. 😉 thanks for the great video!
