Everything was going wonderfully well for me; all my desires were anticipated and more than satisfied by my new servant. It happened that, at a certain moment, I gave him my violin and challenged him to play some romantic piece for me. My astonishment was enormous when I heard him play, with great bravery and intelligence, a sonata as singular and romantic as I had never heard before. Such was my wonder, ecstasy and delight that I was astonished and a violent emotion awakened me. I immediately took up my violin wishing to remember at least a part of what I had just heard, but it was in vain. The sonata that I composed then is, by far, the best that I have ever written and I still call it "The Devil's Sonata", but it turned out to be so inferior to what I had heard in the dream that I would have liked to break my violin into pieces and abandon music forever..."

I am well aware that this is a joke, but if you think about it, why is it so hard for the generations that grew up with technology to memorize certain subjects, while past generations could do it with much ease. To those who still can't comprehend on what I am stating here, what is the main difference between the era of today compared to the past era's. Technology, modern entertainment, the ability to reach to someone thousands if not millions of miles away, in just a click of a button. You know what? I actually do want to believe that the story behind this piece is legitimate. This is a true, otherworldly masterpiece, and NO human would deny having written it. The fact that Tartini totally could've just said "Hehe, look at what a genius I am!" instead of insisting that he DID hear this in a dream from the "devil" (or whichever entity he might've dreamed of) speaks volumes. No way would anyone refuse to take credit for such a masterpiece in favor of making up a "cute little story".
@EEIA33148 ай бұрын
It actually makes more sense that it's a made-up story. Even if he had said "Look how smart I am", he probably wouldn't have been listened to as much and become famous. The fact that he put a story with the devil and religious motifs into this composition is what makes the song memorable and interesting. After all, people care about supernatural and religious imagery. That's why religious stories have been told for years.

This artpiece would certainly represent what the devil knows would be man's greatest weakness. Their self doubts. The dancing of the chords makes it sound as if it is chasing around something, playing with you, and exploiting what you bury in the subconcious. The anxiety inducing buildup towards a somber upending brings out the full ugliness of the mind, in a small yet potent form. When you think it could be over it happens again, with your doubts growing bigger. And around the third time the trilling of the violins and other instruments make you feel a moment of true despair in a cathartic fashion. I may not know much about music, but it took a real orchestral genious to remember what played in his very nightmares that haunted him until his demise.

“One night, in the year 1713 I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music which I at this time composed is indeed the best that I ever wrote, and I still call it the "Devil's Trill", but the difference between it and that which so moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and have said farewell to music forever if it had been possible for me to live without the enjoyment it affords me.”

Tartini sold his soul to the devil in a dream of his. He exchanged his soul for the devil to be his servant and teacher. At the end of the music lesson Tartini handed the violin to the devil to see if he could play. The devil started playing with virtuosity; delivering an intense and magnificent performance. Tartini described it like this: "I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke." Mesmerized by the devil’s brilliant and awe-inspiring playing, Tartini immediately attempted to recreate what he had heard. However, despite having said that the sonata was his favorite, Tartini later wrote that it was "so inferior to what I had heard, that if I could have subsisted on other means, I would have broken my violin and abandoned music forever." I can barely imagine how good the actual sonata must have been that he heard the devil play in his dream.
