Paganini was the first ever rock star back in the 1800's, some people actually believe that he made a deal with the devil to get his musical talents, also some humor says that it isn't true, he just practiced all day and night which is why he is good at playing the violin. A humor says that he told everyone he sold his soul to the devil, because of that it became a free advert for him. He would let his hair down and play the violin, he would replace the strings with soft ones and play hard and break the strings to impress the audience, he would even hire someone to dress as a devil and just dance around the back ground scaring the audience. Also there is a movie about him called the devil's violinist.

This is, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit, my first exposure to Paganini's music. Apparently, based upon the comments I'm reading, people in his time thought him demonic or to be an incarnation of the Devil himself and, from what I'm hearing in his compositions, it's not hard to see why. I never knew the violin was capable of making such sounds. This is both beautiful and, not going to lie, somewhat unsettling. As a complete aside, the portrait you used for this is just delectable.

The thing with the rumour of him having his soul sold to the devil is also partially because at the time he was slowly dying riddled with disease he refused to talk to the pastor and thus wasnt allowed to be buried in holy soil for a while.

Insightful comment. I think I agree with your opinion on the duality of his personality expressed when playing different instruments. Paganini’s guitar compositions sound on the other hand so calm, soothing and harmonic. Interestingly Paganini himself is said to have once remarked “The violin is my mistress, but the guitar is my master.“ perhaps his own thoughts on the two instruments could shed some light on the matter.

A good film showing what Paganini "might" have looked like, see the final film of Klaus Kinski which he also directed, "Paganini". I have it on DVD. Good scene near the end was when Paganini was at his home outside and playing his violin, and was really tearing into it intensely, and surreally some servants and his daughter were around and started staring at his performance, which would be his last, because his intensity caused him to start bleeding and he collapsed. It was as if he played so intensely that he wiped out and collapsed, which somehow reminded me of Peter Townsend when he finished a performance and smashed his guitar, or Jimi Hendrix who burned his guitar at the end of his performance.

Who is more metal, Niccolò Paganini or Beethoven? Paganini, no question. It’s almost eerie how metal Paganini was. Let’s compare them. Beethoven was a great composer. Paganini wasn’t: he composed his own works for himself to play, and they’re more about showing off what he could do with an instrument than about constructing a large-scale piece of music that uses all of the compositional and instrumental resources available to him. In this, Paganini is a direct precursor of Yngwie Malmsteen. Forty metal points to Paganini; none to Beethoven. Paganini and Beethoven were both virtuosi on their instruments, but Beethoven had to stop playing because he went deaf. Ten metal points each, but an extra five to Beethoven for going deaf, which is a very metal thing to do. Paganini toured constantly. Thirty metal points. Beethoven didn’t tour but lived in Vienna from the age of 21 to his death. Minus five metal points. Paganini also played guitar. Ten metal points. Beethoven didn’t. Zero metal points. Paganini had an illegitimate son with a singer who he met on tour. Fifteen metal points. Beethoven’s love life was pretty dismal and he never had children, but obtained custody of his nephew instead. This is, frankly, not a metal thing to do. Zero points. Paganini tried to set up a casino, which immediately failed. Ten metal points for getting involved in badly planned business ventures. Beethoven never did anything as ill-advised as that. Zero points. Paganini had health issues partly as a result of all the touring, including syphilis. Thirty metal points. Beethoven’s health issues were not a result of touring. Zero points. Paganini loved gambling and womanising, and was successful at both. Fifty metal points and a silver Lemmy pin into the bargain. Beethoven didn’t. Zero metal points. Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 is probably his most famous work, making Paganini a one-hit wonder, like many metal bands. Forty metal points. Beethoven is known for many works. Ten metal points for having a substantial and varied discography, including five extra points for his concept album . Edit: Emmet D’Alton pointed out that Paganini went around in skin-tight black and arrived at venues in a black carriage pulled by black horses, so thirty metal points for that. However, it has to be admitted that Beethoven often dressed shabbily and was generally unkempt, so ten more metal points for that. Paganini was said to have sold his soul to the devil for his talent. Ninety metal points. This was not said of Beethoven. Zero points. Result: Paganini: 365 metal points. Beethoven: 55 metal points. You're welcome

Beyond the gimmick, when a person does something very well so much that they're so in tune with emotion or can in essence capture it.....as if to put the very emotion itself into a bottle and sell it to the audience.........and subsequently then have the ability to captivate the audience so much that they themselves are in resonance with that emotion .. only to turn around and call the audience out for being a fool.... I believe it. The question is then to what end the result is used by others which may be entirely different than the intent of the original person. vs the meaning theyd put behind it orignally............ that makes them a devil or of something else.....................

He was a rebel . Friends with Napoleon's sister , mason, and he never wrote for church or for goverment , only "God save the king " , a variation on English hymn "God save the Queen" , wrote "witches " , was chronically ill Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.. He was diagnosed with syphilis as early as 1822. Lived lonely all his life

The second piece is Caprice no. 5. It's the one that they used in the movie "Crossroads" at the end when the kid had to play against the Devil's guitar player and win the contest.

Musicians were better back then in my opinion due to the lack of distractions. No electronics, phones, traffic, nothing. They practiced on a level most musicians can't achieve today. modern times have masterful musicians also, but they are the few that will tell you all they did growing up was practice and play.

i was learning violin as i always loved stringed instruments and was further encouraged to ask for a violin when I learned about him and how we both suffered hypermobile traits, though mine being painful and I don't know if his was aswell or not, but my mother threw out the instrument and I've not had classes again for a year or so.. :"( oh well

One day after listening to "Beloved Antichrist" by Therion, some Paganini popped up in my recommendations, and what was a good Pagan to do. I clicked and as I was listening for a couple hours it dawned on me must have written that entire 3 cd set in bits and pieces long ago.
