Taryl, in aviation & marine applications we’ve used Loctite 1525607 Aviation Gasket Sealant on shaft & linkage seals that don’t seat snugly in the casing. In your latest situation you’d tip the machine to stop the lube from draining and apply the sealant to both the outside surface of the seal and the mating surface of the transmission case. It’s good stuff when you need to be 100% sure the seal is not going to pop out at 20,000ft or the middle of the bristol bay. Cheers!

Jeepers Taryl... on my SCAG, there is both a drain plug, a fill nut, a filter and on the chassis a nice large access hole for the fill nut plug. SCAG designs their mowers for servicing... HUGE difference. Kudos to SCAG... not so much for Ariens. Live and learn. These little details sure make for an enjoyable maintenance experience. Sorry you had this one in the shop. But those guys look like you did good by them.

Unless they are proprietary seals usually have an identification number on them, or they will have three two digit numbers molded into the face of the seal. The numbers indicate the ID, OD and width of the seal. Armed with that info any decent bearing house can order them individually.
@leonhart2452 Жыл бұрын
On a seal like that I use a sealer like Three Bond like what motorcycle engine cases get sealed with. A coat around the outside of the seal. This eases the install and some gets pushed out along the seal to form a bead around the edge of seal and case.

Great vid as always taryl, had a commercial bobcat come in the shop with leaking park shaft and control shaft seals, hydrogear wouldn't warranty it. Same situation the seals spun in the housing, I always put a thin coat of silicone on the outside of the seals and hammer them in. Learned that trick back in the 90's on ford escort cam shaft seals, they would spin in the head and leak. Used that trick ever since and had no issue's. Thanks for all the info you share to the world!
@JeffBNH Жыл бұрын
I would have ran a thin film of Right Stuff around the outside of the seal, and oil on the seal lip inside then install it. Let it cure for a few hours. I have very good luck doing that with vehicles cam and crank seals. Volvo's are notorious for spinning out camshaft seals. Love your videos Taryl and crew!

Got an MZ, old model. Check ur lever stops are even both sides. Adjust the tierods from levers to gearboxes. Usually u only need adjust 1. U should find when they are equal length they are correct. They are buggers to get at but take ur time. Adjust a liitle at a time, leave adjusters finger tight until u r sure u got it right. Test on level ground as a slight incline will make mower drift to one side. The only real trouble I have had with the MZ is dust in the various switches. Blow out with air, never use CRC or WD40 as this collects more dust. I would like to say "Theres ur dinner" but Taryl might have it copywrited hahahaha.

Gone are the days when an Ariens machine lasted for 30 years. P.S. I forgot- LETS RAAWWKKKK!!! P.P.S. Guarantee Motion Industries has the seal. If I can get seals for a 1986 Husqvarna dirt bike (shock seals, wheel bearing seal, fork seals, etc) from them, they'd have that. A seal is a seal. It seems like some seal retaining compound would have been a good idea around that seal. They make a vacuum oil extractor that allows you to suck all the oil up and out the vent cap, the same place you filled it. My cousin has to use a vacuum oil extractor on the diesel motor in his boat because you can't get under the engine to catch the oil. It works really well and fast. No mess.

With HOP products, I sometimes had the customer call the customer 800 number and argue with the techs to get some work done under warranty. Very often when I would argue with the techs on the dealer line and I would get nowhere. But also often when a customer finally got through to the right people at Husqvarna's customer service (that requires persistence), the company would call me and say they were going to fix it under warranty. Since Ariens is now an HOP product, that is worth a try.

From my understanding Cub Cadet made a transmission for their 2160 called the Autogear Transmission. Instead of running off a hydrostatic drive it runs off multiple clutches which are attached to a 6-speed transmission. I'm curious on how it works and how to diagnose problems with that particular transmission.

I replaced one last year, with a similar concern, the new seal I installed came out too, so I took it apart again and I had to peen the outer edge of the transmission to keep the seal from coming back out.
