I recently moved and I'm so glad that I got rid of alot of stuff before I moved, but when I got to my new place and started unpacking, I went through the "why did I even pack this item" phase, so those items went as well. So just don't be surprised if you go through that phase when you're unpacking, it's normal.

Love this video! I recently went through the entire house after my children moved out. It was AMAZING how much stuff we had. I donated, sold, gave away. All gone! Took a couple of weeks to get through everything.

Thank you for breaking it down. Completely understandable and made so much sense. Been declutting and re-doing my rooms. Huge difference in how I feel about my home. I'm 60 years old, I don't want my children to have a lot of my stuff to deal with when I leave this world. Dana K White and Dawn the Minimal Mom was very helpful in getting me started. I need to declutter my apartment in order to move stuff out of the storage unit. (The storage unit is far away, and will require movers to move it all to my city, so I can go through it. I want to move half of it into my apartment, to sort through it, til I can get to the other half. It's my parent's belongings from after they died, the things I thought I might want.)

Does anyone have advice on how to encourage my parents to Declutter, they have a three-car garage and can only put one car in it, and two spare bedrooms that are full of stuff. I don't want my siblings and me to have to deal with it when they pass

It's so hard when it's other people's stuff. Maybe you can send them some videos and offer to help. They deserve an uncluttered home - we all do! Good luck!!

Maybe ask them what is difficult about dealing with all of it. Perhaps you could offer to help with those aspects. Just don't tell them what to keep or get rid of. That will make shut down, and rightfully so. One thing you might offer/ask if you can do is to simply work with them in a room to group similar objects, by grouping them by category (letting them choose the categories: give them as much decision-making as possible), so that there's order to the stuff in the room. It helps to think of the room as having "activity zones" that make sense for that room. For example, a bedroom might have a guest bed, a desk area, a hobby area, a bookshelf area. Only keep items that belong with the activity of that area there. It's easier to see what one wants to keep, or not need or love, if everything is grouped into categories and then into subcategories. Just don't suggest getting rid of anything. Simply offer to group items together so it is more organized. Let the decision to get rid of anything be their idea, entirely. If they want to get rid of something, then ask if they'd like you to bring some boxes, or ask if they need help lifting it into the car. I find the best boxes are wine-case boxes from the grocery store. They're small and heavy duty, so they can't be overpacked and weigh too much, and won't be too big to be unwieldy. That makes them lightweight and easy to move around, even if filled with heavy books or paper. I call the supermarket, ask them when their wine shipment comes in, then arrive half an hour early, and ask if I can take any boxes before they break them down. I fill my car with them. You might check out professional organizer Julie Morganstern's book from the library, "Organizing From the Inside Out." It's the bible of professional organizing. Her methods make organizing and decluttering as painless as possible, and easy to do.

Buying things to organize clutter. LOL. I have to laugh. I just watched another decluttering video in which that person is constantly running to Target to buy pricey organizing baskets, many from plastic, so her closets look "cute." Those baskets and other containers are expensive, future landfill junk, and don't even allow her to see in the baskets on the shelf, to know what she has. Thank you for raising this subject!

Yes - those containers are so expensive! I used to make this mistake and then I realized it wasn't helping. I like the idea of a pretty closet or pantry but I'd rather have it functional for what I need :)
