In this Disney animated tale, the orphaned Tarzan (Tony Goldwyn) grows up in the remote African wilderness, raised by the gentle gorilla Kala (Glenn Close). When a British expedition enters the jungle, Tarzan encounters the beautiful Jane (Minnie Driver) and recognizes that, like her, he's human. Falling in love with Jane, Tarzan is torn between embracing civilization and staying with his gorilla family, which becomes threatened by the ruthless hunter Clayton (Brian Blessed).

@@craigime Well, the damsel in distress part can be unjustified if not handled appropriately. Like a woman trying to escape but effectively can’t is one thing, but a woman who doesn’t try at all is another.

I wouldn’t even call Jane a damsel in distress. I have no idea where that came from anyway except maybe the monkey scene? But she literally helps fight and even runs from Tarzan like any normal person would in that scenario (minus taking his help after refusing it because it was the better option than the monkeys) And in the end, she saves Kala and some other apes, and even tries to fight Clayton. Yes he took her down, but that’s just a sheer size difference. I’d totally be taken down by Clayton if he attacked me, even if I fought back. Jane isn’t a damsel. She’s very realistic with varying strengths and weaknesses. Not all women who aren’t fighting machines or protagonists have to be labeled as damsels. It just alienates women who don’t fit the “strong and solo” stereotype.

Fun animal facts: when Kerchek beats his chest they did the proper movement of a gorilla using open palms instead of the typical closed fists. Tantor freaking out over the skull is accurate cuz elephants are some of the few animals that can recognize bones so seeing human skull when he's around gorillas... Also it's set during the Victorian era & from the books Tarzan is actually named John Clayton the Earl of Greystokes & he is the most anatomically accurate human Disney has ever made

You know, some people claim that Sabor the leopard (who in the original books was actually a lioness) was just simply being a natural predator trying to stay alive. Well, that may have been the case when she killed Kala and Kerchak's real son. However, she clearly did not kill Tarzan's parents for food. Yes, she was trying to get him, but she clearly did not eat his parents' corpses. She killed them solely because they were in her way, and for simply the pure pleasure of killing them. So, since she killed two adult humans JUST for sport, she broke a law of nature. Also, the local jungle animals of this West African jungle must be more familiar with the native African humans rather than paler ones like Tarzan. In fact, in the spinoff TV show The Legend of Tarzan (and in the original books), Tarzan gets introduced to a native African human tribe called the Waziri, and it fascinates him that they are humans who have apparently lived in this jungle longer than he has.

It’s not set during the Regency era; it’s set in the 1880s since they mention Queen Victoria during the scene where Tarzan is about to go with them on the boat back to England. Queen Victoria ruled Britain and Ireland from 1837 to 1901, so the movie takes place during that time period.

Surprised no one commented it, but I also didn't hear either of y'all say it. Cool fact: Tarzan is (now only possibly) Elsa and Anna's younger brother. After Frozen came out, a theory appeared that their parents died on the way to Corona, given their close distance. It was confirmed, along with the writer mentioning about how their parents survived, and maybe landed on a nearby island......where he believes they may have died to a Jaguar. Sound familiar?? Only downside is that around Frozen 2, that same person came out and said that they WEREN'T siblings. So, it's really left up to the viewer. Seeing as the official person can't decide lol

Animals can indeed take care and show respect to people the same way we do them. I mean, so many people have been rescued by dogs and cats even without the training. I'm currently studying wildlife biology, and some stories can really make you break down and cry. There was a man who dedicated over 20 years of his life to this African reserve, where he would welcome and rescue many elephant herds. The elephants all traveled and gathered for him on the day he died, almost like a funeral viewing. And now, every year, this elephant travels miles and miles to the same spot on the same day he died to show their respect. An Elephant never forgets.🥲

2 funny facts: 1. According to one of Tarzan's books when he was a teen (or a young adult?) he actually fell in love with a female-ape and wanted her to be her mate so he fought another ape that wanted her. Tarzan won but the she-ape rejected him not because of lack of strength or fierceness but because he looked funny, didn't have hair and was little in size in comparison to the ape's size. And he was like "you know what? I love you so much that I want to see you happy, so pick a male that fits your standards. I'm cool with that." 2. In the latin version the actor that gave his voice to Tarzan was Eduardo Palomo (RIP) and when he was invited to the premiere, everyone was shocked because he looked a lot like Tarzan physically. (Damn he was so damn HAWT!!!! And he was also a very nice guy)

The thing with Kerchak (The huge male Silverback Gorilla) is not only does he see Tarzan as “different” because he’s human, but also his resentment comes from the big Alpha complex within Gorilla families. An alpha silverback male will normally be very resentful of their own male children as they see them as a threat to their Alpha status within the larger group. Also Kerchak being the Alpha it's his job to take care of the troop against treaths he's the must powerful Gorilla in a usual troop where all the others are basically females and babies, that's why only he fights against the leopard. You ever wonder why the only grown male gorilla you ever see in the whole movie Is just Kerchak? Well that's how an adult troop Is usually conformed. The grown male gorillas are casted out or have to fight him for the Alpha position, or killed as they were babies althought not in every case.

Here are a few things you didn't know about Tarzan. His name is actually John Clayton the third he and Clayton are related. And in the books (yes there are books) Tarzans parents weren't killed by a leopard they were killed by the actual apes that raised him. They beat his father to death.

I’ve always found that cool & fitting. That Tarzan avenged his biological parents, and his adoptive brother. Although while he doesn’t know presently in Tarzan, he figures it out later on. Enough to have a prejudice towards leopards in The Legend of Tarzan. I actually don’t think Sabor was a regular Leopard. The age issue you mentioned and the fact that she was able to withstand as much as she did in her fight with Kerchak & Tarzan all lead me to believe she had something to do with Queen La. Queen La was around at the time and she in -universe performed all sorts of magical rituals enhancing & altering Leopards in Tarzans jungle. Sabor easily could’ve been a pet or servant of La’s that she released back into the jungle. It makes the most sense.

Phil Collins did not have to go as hard as he did for this soundtrack and yet he blessed us anyways. Every song is a banger. By the way, I hope you get a chance to react to Top Gun: Maverick (and the original, of course) when it drops on streaming soon (it's supposed to have a 120 day theatrical window)! I saw it this past Memorial Day weekend (I'm going to be taking my dad to see it on Father's Day) and it's not only one of the best sequels ever made, but the perfect example on how you make a blockbuster film!

the thing i love is when tarzan was "shot"(grazed his arm) kerchak immediately went to attack the person (clayton) who hurt him like he saw him as his son finally and when someone hurt him, he went to get them without a second thought he may not have been his dad really, not accepting him as a kid and stuff, but he definitely ended up seeing tarzan as his son

Another thing I like is that, after Tarzan kills Sabor and Kerchak begins leaving, Tarzan lays the dead leopard at his feet in a subservient way,showing that Kerchak is still the leader.

@@phousefilms another thing I want to add here is after Tarzan encounters Jane and the others, when Kerchak and Tarzan were arguing, Kerchak firmly said to Tarzan "Protect this family, and stay away from them (humans)". He didn't say to Tarzan "You will never understand" or "If you want to be with them, go to them", he said PROTECT THIS FAMILY. Kerchak may have some issues with Tarzan, but he trusts him to the point of protecting the family.

In the book Kerchak was the one who killed Tarzan's dad and Tarzan ended up killing Kerchak because Kerchak killed his brother. Also, Clayton (Who is Tarzan's biological cousin) was such a stand-up guy that Tarzan decided Jane was better off with him instead of himself.

14:08 the reason the other apes aren’t joining is due to that the family group is mostly of mothers with babies and young adults. Kerchik is the only adult male (besides Tarzan) and it’s his job to protect his family.

As a matter of fact, Tarzan didn't experience any mating seasons. In a gorilla group the only male allowed to mate is the leader, who is also usually the only adult male in the group. The rest are females and their offspring. This makes every young gorilla in the family Kerchak's kids, and also that the family is going to go extinct with Tarzan being the alpha male.

I'm not sure how fast gorillas reach maturity (but also don't expect disney to be scientifically correct either), but I assume the male gorillas in their friend group would be on the verge of leaving the family group to form their own families.

The boys will move on, the ladies won't have kids or will join other males and form their families... And Tarzan and his mum and other older gorillas can just live the rest of their lives out. His mum didn't have any more kids after Tarzan so that aspect isn't really shown to be an issue for the animals even if in real life instinct would dictate whether they would have more offspring.

A small detail I like about the movie is how Tarzan's voice actor speaks with different fluency depending on whether he's with animals or with humans. The implication of course is that he's speaking his first language with the animals but still has a way to go when it comes to the Queen's English.

Yes! I noticed that too! I also love the detail that sometimes (wether Tarzan is with humans or not, but mostly when he’s with humans), u can notice that he grunts (cause yk, he was raised by gorillas and etcetera), and that’s such a detail that makes me love this movie SOOOO MUCH.

9:43 IDK if anyone else realize this, but Tarzan learned how to swim precisely at this second. He jumped off a cliff into the water without knowing how to swim. The kid is crazy brave, and that definitely passed into his adulthood, and so did his curiosity and lightning-fast learning.

Kerchak was definitely insecure when he couldn't fight the leopard like Tarzan could. Tarzan's interferance could be see as Tarzan beginning to show that he is becoming a leader and could one day challenge him for leadership. Kerchak is getting old and Tarrzan is showing he has the ability to protect the group while Kerchak could not. Kerchak originally walked away with that thought and Tarzan laying that leopard at his feet was subserviant showing Tarzan was not challenging him (males do fight for dominance after all) but making Kerchak realize that maybe Tarzan may be qualified to be leader one day and starting to really accept him as part of the family to come to that decision before the humans came. My guess is Kerchak knew about humans and knew of guns as he immediately became defensive when he saw the guns especially when Clayton pointed it at another which was part of why he was afraid of them.

In terms of the story, I definitely saw it as a moment where Kerchak is reluctantly starting to give Tarzan a degree of his approval but he's still too proud to properly accept him. Tarzan delivering Sabor's corpse at his feet, was him expressing how much he respects him which in turn makes Kerchak realize he can't keep telling himself that he hasn't earned his place in the family. Especially when he just avenged his son (and Tarzan's parents)

Yes Phil Collins really went hard on this soundtrack and I'm glad he did, this is one of the all time best Disney soundtracks and he even won an Oscar for it. He will go hard again for the Brother Bear soundtrack, another great Disney one. Tarzan went all out not just with the graphics and animation but with the violence. As a kid watching it, the scene with the bodies of Tarzan's dead parents really scarred me, really wasn't expecting Disney to do that but I applaud them for it. Also fun fact: Minnie Driver who voiced Jane improvised the scene where Jane described meeting Tarzan for the first time to her father and since the animators based Jane's mannerisms on her, the scene took 7 weeks to animate and 73 feet of film.

This film really contains enough cruelty, and the cartoon is not afraid to show it in different stages of Tarzan's life (although the main character here does not kill blacks as in the original). But it contrasts nicely with the driving vine flying and the layering of 2D on 3D branches. By the way, I don’t really understand why so many mock and make fun of Phil Collins.

He was old people music because we were young and very, very stupid. He's had a resurgence that's well-deserved now that his music from things like this are being better appreciated.

Fun fact there's an alternate opening for this that actually shows Sabor killing Tarzan's father, with his mother implied to have already died. Saw a video of the storyboard; it is as graphic as a g rated movie could possibly get away with. Not a drop of blood and it's in pitch darkness but it is effectively leaving eff all to the imagination.

Just so you know, Sabor is actually female, and she's supposed to be a leopard (even though her spots look more like those of a jaguar). Tigers have stripes instead of spots, and as far as I know, they don't live in Africa. Also, gorillas are apes. Not monkeys.

The film was given a special Oscar for it’s depth vine layer animation and Tony Hawk with other skateboarders were used for reference footage for Tarzan tree surfing. Also Phil Collins won the Oscar for Best Original Song for You’ll be in my Heart and this upset Trey Park and Matt Stone for Blame Canada as they said they would be fine losing to anyone, but not Phil Collins and they made fun of him in the show.

From what I know, in gorilla culture, the lead male defends the group and if he fails and another male succeeds, he becomes an outcast. It wasn't about pride when kerchak left the group after Tarzan killed the leopard. Then, when Tarzan presented the kill to him, it's like he was denouncing his leadership, allowing Kerchak to stay leader.

The story of Tarzan looks similar to the jungle book. Except for one big difference Tarzan was raised by gorillas, and Mogwai was raised by wolves. And they both lost their parents when they were babies, but it is good that their adopted animal parents took very good care of them. And that's what I love about both stories.

It's nice, though, that the 90s Disney Renaissance Era lasted all throughout the 90s, that they had the full decade of success, especially when you consider that the first of the Disney Renaissance films, The Little Mermaid, came out exactly ten years before, in 1989. Pocahontas and Hercules didn't quite see the extent of success as the other films of the decade, but they still did well. I wish Pocahontas had told more of the real story and didn't go for the all-out myth version, it might have done better if written not so cliche and preachy, but the 90s Disney movies era was amazing.

Though I will say 2009-2019 became what some called “The Resurgence/Neo-Renaissance Era.” Rekindling that same success as they did in the 90s.

Ok so something that REALLY hurts me as an artist is how the development team for this film were treated by one particular Disney CEO Manager whatever his name is. Tarzan used 3D Canvasing, first 2D film to use it. Mainly on the vine surfing scenes and the more action oriented scenes like the tree house. So 3D Canvasing is where you build a 3D environtment, and then draw 2D characters interacting with it and you put a Camera on a crane so this way it saved animators SO MUCH TIME. WAY Ahead of it's time for this film and was also used in the film Treasure Planet and Journey to Atlantis. Problem was 3D canvassing wasn't accessible and was VERY VERY expensive back then since 3D technology was only just starting to enter the public main stream of technology. And sadly one Disney Manager saw this as too costly. So what did he do? The director who'd dreamed of making Treasure planet finally had his dream project realized but the Disney Manager did something truly dispicable. He placed the film's opening IN THE SAME TIME as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. ANY film studio knew back then the reception Harry Potter was getting was going to take away form any other film opening. And since CEOs only look at the immediate results in modern buinsess era, the film underperformed and the 3D/2D department that helped make the film was shut down. As an artist it truly hurts my soul to see such passion and hard work get canclled because someone didn't have the foresight to see a possible business trend and being the forefront of a possible new wave of animation.

One sweet thing about the scene where Tarzan puts his hand on Jane's is that the animator had recently had a baby girl and held her hand like Tarzan had, so he wrote it into the scene because of how much it connected with him.

Clayton's voice is Brian Blessed, OBE, a real-life Shakespearean actor, trained opera singer, adventurer, and mountaineer. He has attempted Everest without oxygen multiple times, though he never reached the summit. While there he made friends with a wolf who decided to accompany him up the mountain. He also spoke to the native guides about the yeti, who he has said he believes might be real. He bases that belief on the idea that mountain gorillas were unknown for so long and there could still be animals we just don't know about. He runs an animal sanctuary with his wife, has trained for hundreds of hours with the Russian cosmonauts (his health prevented him from actually going to space) and is the oldest man to reach the magenetic north pole on foot. He tells a story that he had to punch a polar bear in the nose to dissuade it from attacking him on that expedition. He is one of the most interesting people in the world.

There's also a Beast figure in the Sultan's miniature toy tower in Aladdin, a person is shaking out Carpet from Aladdin and Belle is seen walking in the crowd during Hunchback, and even in their modern films there's a Mickey doll and Eugene/Rapunzel cameo in Frozen. 🤷‍♀️

What's really fucked up is that in the books Clayton is pretty much THE single most morally upstanding character in the entire franchise. Much more so even than Tarzan. To the point where at the end of the first book Tarzan lets Jane go back with Clayton because he understands that that is better for her.

(At 37:35) You know what I found out disturbing about Tarzan and Clayton? They are closely related, not the fact they're humans, but they share the same family name and by blood. "Clayton" being their last names… of royal descent. Tarzan happened to be next in line after his father. So basically, Tarzan and Clayton are officially related… as cousins.

This... This movie... THAT was my entire childhood. I remember when my dad shown me this movie when i was 6. I fell in love with it. I could watch it 3 times a day every day and didnt get bored of it. What a movie, still love it to pieces!
