There is an Easter egg about Hook’s backstory in the 2003 version. Hook has the crest of Eton College tattooed on his left shoulder, which is where he went to school in the book, a major source of pride for him and where he got his obsession with “good form.” And that alone is still better than the entirety of the new backstory in the 2023 version.
@StephanieKimPascaru11 ай бұрын
Oh wow I didn't notice the tattoo, that's a really nice detail! I agree--Hook going to a prestigious boarding school as a child is a way more interesting backstory than what the 2023 version came up with. It also makes more sense, since he dresses/speaks differently than the other pirates.

I also feel that Wendy has this loving connection to Peter BECAUSE they’re both adventurous and imaginative. They both love whimsy. And that’s something that is really relatable and so charming about their relationship. And it plays into Wendy’s internal conflict directly because that’s part of her struggle with “growing up.” She likes adventure and whimsy, but in real life you have to have some caution. And she’s in between that while in Neverland. Does she act cautiously, sensibly-or allow herself to rush in without thinking too much? Etc. But, in the newest version neither of them seem to connect on sharing an adventurous spirit-which is crazy to me-that’s the best part of their friendship in my opinion.

One thing that the movie is constantly at war with itself over is its confusing stance on motherhood, which the novel itself handled with maturity. In this film, we hear multiple times that not only does Wendy not have any interest in motherhood, but she treats her own mother with scorn and indignation even when she's comforting her daughter, as if her traditional life is to blame and needs to be fully erased. But then, in the next breath, Wendy sees Hook as deserving of sympathy because he longed for his own mother, even though she was scoffing at the idea just a few moments ago. The film itself can't be honest about what it's communicating because it's only pretending to be endorsing values as long as it's convenient but when it's time to actually think about what was introduced, it freezes up. If that isn't hypocrisy, I don't know what is.

@shannonmcelroy8454Ай бұрын
@quinnfletcher3906 Exactly. Also, just a side note, but honestly, the way most of the kids are written is NOT how children think or behave in real life. They can start to butt heads with their parents at around Wendy's age, but the way Wendy acts makes you think she hasn't bonded with any of her family members, which if it does happen in a child, it usually means there's something horribly wrong with them. Human beings are social creatures by birth, and they form attachments at a young age for survival and protection. It's why they need parental figures in their lives from an early age or else they'll grow to see the idea of social relationships as a threat to themselves, when in reality they're often the one thing that keeps most people from self-destructing as they grow up.

To be honest, I think the 2003 Peter Pan hits home a very important message; "Just because one must grow up, doesn't mean one has to stop caring for others." Hook basically represents everything that Peter Pans fears he'll become, a senile and cynical old man with no joy or fun in his heart, which in a twist of irony, makes Hook just as much a child as Peter. So out of fear, Peter remains a carefree boy in the hopes of avoiding such a horrible fate. Wendy proves both of them wrong, in a twist of fate that proves that even grown ups can feel joy in their life in spite of everything else.

@@marrychrismas306 Hmm actually I'm not sure. To me it seemed like it was played for jokes in the movie and he wouldn't actually do it. But in the book and the movie, Peter is very young, and stuck in his child-like mindset, so he doesn't fully comprehend the seriousness of killing someone. He doesn't have a strong grasp of what is right or wrong, only what is "fair" to him. Like in the book Peter thinks it's unfair to fight someone when they're unarmed, so he won't fight them. But he also thinks it's unfair to fight the enemy team if they're outnumbered, so he'll join his enemies and fight his friends to make the numbers even on both teams. So in Peter's eyes, if he took the lost boy's life, he would think it's fair since the lost boy (I think it was Tootles?) supposedly took Wendy's life. He shouldn't do that, but he doesn't know any better. I wouldn't say he's a villain, but more in the grey area. He's also nicer/kinder in the 2003 movie than in the book (and the animated version), so I don't think he would've actually hurt the lost boys. But that's just my interpretation 😅

I'm going to add my 2 cents because I JUST watched 2003 again last night and it's by far one of my favorite movies ever. I need to talk about the GENIUS use of lighting in this movie. It's incredibly specific. At the basic levels, they cast sad, unhappy characters in a cool lighting, and happy, joyful characters in a warm lighting. Throughout most of the movie, Peter/Wendy are bathed in warmth, while Hook is almost always in a cool-toned lighting. The biggest place this switches is in the climax scene, where Hook is taunting Peter. Hook is cast in a warm lighting to show how he genuinely takes joy in tormenting a boy, while Peter is thrown into shadow/cool light as he falls into despair at the thought of Wendy leaving him. Another example of this is the dance/argument scene. While dancing, the fairies' glow gives the scene and characters warmth, but when the moment is broken, and the argument ensues, Peter and Wendy are in shadow. This makes the ending scene even more significant, because while Peter is leaving the window, he's in shadow/cool light, while Wendy, with her family, is in warm light. Despite the light-hearted banter the two share, the lighting shows that deep down, Peter is genuinely sad to be leaving Wendy, while Wendy as matured enough to be happy and content at home. Another point I'd like to make is that Hook is supposed to represent everything the children fear in growing up. He's played by the same man that plays Mr. Darling (Jason Isaacs, who, fun fact, also plays Lucius Malfoy), and this concept in alluded to in really clever, subtle ways throughout the movie. Like, for example, when Hook is slowly sinking towards Tick Tock Crock, he starts shouting out 'happy thoughts', which mostly consist of harming others, but also include things like 'lawyers' and 'dentists'. Conclusion: I love this movie and the older I get the guiltier I feel because I still have a crush on Jeremy Sumpter's Peter Pan.

@StephanieKimPascaru Жыл бұрын
@JamezKelly Yeah, Pirates of the Caribbean had great night lighting! Like you can tell it's dark and it's night but you can still see everything clearly even when there would technically be little or no light. @JamezKelly Жыл бұрын
@StephanieKimPascaru Exactly! It was easier to visualize and made the moonlight and fire torches an excellent tool for lighting. This new trend (definitely with Disney) of bland lighting and colour palettes and realistic everything just distracts from the fantasy element. You did a great job at elaborating on the differences between these two movies. I haven't read the novel, so I don't really care about accuracy. I just like the idea behind Peter Pan, and it's interesting to see various takes on the story. The 2003 version has everything I could ask for from a Peter Pan movie. It's a whimsical adventure that appeals to children but does not shy away from darker moments and conveys a powerful message. I especially love how it portrays Peter and Hook as complex characters whose rivalry doesn't need a backstory. It also gives us a Wendy who is adventurous but also caring and mature. Furthermore, this version of Neverland actually feels like a child's dream brought to life. As for the 2023 version, I liked that it presented yet another take on the story. There was a really interesting concept of Wendy being "too old" for Neverland and the children being suspicious of her because of that. It seemed that she was meant to be a mediator between Peter and Hook. However, because of their backstory, Wendy's age didn't end up being relevant. As it was, none of the characters had any interesting dynamics, and it felt like the movie was held back by its own agenda

If anything, This video only highlights why the 2023 movie is better than the dribble that is the 2003 movie. I it reminds me of why the 2023 movie works: because it is natural, it’s relatable to anyone, not only those were the same gender as Wendy or even Peter Pan himself, or even someone at a different age, which is the 2003 one does not help which even though yes they are children, it just doesn’t feel compelling enough, largely based on their performance is in a very wonky direction. Yes, the 2023 one does not have the best direction either, but it definitely feels more competent and again focus than whatever the 2003 one is, and Again helps it stand out as its own thing, which also serves the main reason for actually doing it in live action, to have it be more realistic and what it would be like if this actually happened. Yes it’s a fantasy, but you have to have it be grounded and realistic, not unlike Harry Potter (of which it’s last movie did a much much much much much much much much much much much much worse job with the horribly colouring and abysmal Whiting which is where Peter Pan and Wendy got it from……)

Spot-on analysis. While I have not seen the recent D+ release, the clips seen in the online reviews turned me off. Both Peter and Wendy in that version look so unlikeable and harsh. The 2003 film has always had this captivating quality since I first saw it on DVD, especially for how faithful it was to the book. The characters, the visuals and music are so memorable and evocative. Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood my favourite versions of Peter and Wendy, now and always.

I feel like the 2003 film is the perfect adaptation of Peter Pan, like you said it has this captivating quality and it's so faithful to the book. Your video made me want to rematch the 03 version again! I watched the 03 version when I was an adult and still found it to be a great telling of the story. From your clips alone I felt a whiplash switching between the 23 and 03 versions you exhibited, and the energy and cinematography of the 23 version is apparently inferior to the 03 film. I like your astute commentary, and also think the new filmmakers completely miss the point of some of the elements in the original stories; although I don't mind the inclusion of girls in the Lost Boys, it seems odd to keep the name Lost Boys which makes it an apparent and unnecessary bastardization of the original work; also strip Wendy of her maternal inclination in the latest version severely reduces the purpose of the character. I do wonder what James Matthew Barrie would think of the 23 remake! I'm not sure if the lessons are good for young viewers either or if there are any lessons or morals at all to be found in these remakes. Once again, great video, thank you! I hope you keep it up!
@StephanieKimPascaru Жыл бұрын
Ahh thank you so much! I completely agree with you-I love the energy and cinematography of the '03 film; every shot is full of so much life and vibrancy. For the most part I understand why filmmakers have to make changes when adapting stories to live-action, but the changes in the '23 version completely erase the heart and soul of the Peter Pan story. I feel like JM Barrie would be...surprised, to say the least, with the '23 remake lol. The characters act so differently in the remake that everyone's names could've been swapped and it wouldn't have made a difference to the plot. Also I agree the filmmakers could've just changed the title from Lost Boys to Lost Children-it still has a nice ring to it that way! :)

“Have to fly, have to fight, have to crow, have to save Maggie, have to save Jack, Hook is back!” I adored the animated film for such a long time and in the 90s they released “Hook” which became my all time favorite rendition of the Peter Pan story. Infinitely quotable with legendary performances by Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins and Julia Roberts. I havent enjoyed Disney films in quite a while as they seem to try and deconstruct what made the originals so appealing to begin with. Admittedly I haven’t seen the newest Pan but it seems to fall into the same formula as most of the new live action adaptations where they remove the heart and soul and replace it with a in my opinion preachy message that feels tone deaf. Loved your comparison none the less and genuinely hope Disney finds a way to create new and interesting stories even with older characters that doesn’t resort to bashing tradition to uplift new narratives. You are still my favorite channel for discussing cinema so keep being awesome!
@StephanieKimPascaru Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!!! 😊😊'Tone deaf' is the perfect way to describe Disney remakes, as you said-they completely misunderstand the appeal of the original movies and take away everything that made audiences love the story to begin with. Most of Disney's recent remakes have been pretty lifeless and bland, which is a shame since Disney has done some amazing live-action adaptations in the past (Pirates of the Caribbean, Chronicles of Narnia, etc.). I really hope they come back from this slump of remakes; there's so much potential for new stories and I'm sure Disney has the resources and talent to make something spectacular!

Terrific comparison video ! You really where able to convey why the new Disney version failed so hard. I was a student working part time at a cinema when the 2003 version came out and I fell in love with it ! It had so many layers to it. I love how it really showed Peter struggle with developing feelings for Wendy . All the actors where terrific and lively. Peter Pan was the sort of kid all boys would want as a friend and Wendy was adventurous yet likeable and yes as you said motherly. In the new Disney film Wendy is bitter and angry I was expecting her to scream “Don’t mansplain things to me you disgusting male “ 😂 and Peter sounded like a 16 , 17 year old , his voice had already broke and that is pretty stupid because Peter suppose to be a pre-pubescent boy just about to reach his teen years , it is part of the conflict of the character . Having Peter Pan seems older already was bad casting and to top it off, I mean no insult to the actor but he was not very good ! The stone face part in your video really sums up his acting skill for the all film 😂 He delivers his line with very little emotions behind it. So yeah 2003 is an underrated gem that should have been a hit and it is criminal that it did not find its audience at the time because the director LOVED the source material and it is very noticeable while the Disney live action is disrespectful to the source material in order to fit Disney political agenda, none of the character where as written. The director actually seemed to despise the book, It was a lifeless mess.

One of the beautiful aspects of the novel is how wendy was falling in love with Peter but he was so caught up being young that she realized he was hopeless. Hed never grow up. And then Peter saw her as a constant in his life who he clearly wanted to keep forever but his refusal to grow up made him lose her. I was nearly brought to tears in this final chapter when Peter realized child Wendy was gone and grown Wendy realized Peter was only a part of her childhood that she had to let go of though she would always care for him. The 2003 movie did a good job showing the beautiful relationship they shared and could have continued to share were Peter brave enough to grow up. It ends tragic in many ways as the book does too. Yet also embraces the beauty of childhood and enjoyment of the magic in it. A season for everything

I love the 2003 Peter Pan. For me, it's the perfect adaption of the books, Wendy and Peter's relationship was the first time my little twelve year old heart pounded, it was so sweet and yet innocent the scene where she says 'there is so much more. I think you know it when you grow up' was a really endearing way to tell children that yes, there's things you leave behind in childhood as you grow but there is a whole bigger world waiting for you when you get older that you can't see yet. The movie really balances the innocence of childhood with the darker tones Barrie had put in the novel. The new movie just really made all the characters unlikable and Peter himself really weak, not at all the charismatic preteen he's described as in the book.

Even as a 45 yrs of age grown man, I can't help but get a bit teary-eyed when Peter almost looses Tinker Bell. And smile with the "hidden kiss." Very few films do that to me. The 2003 Peter Pan is just so well written, acted, and beautifully made. That said, there was a very brief scene censored on the Blu-ray release but returned on digital version. I don't know if it should or should not be cut. With how disgusting people can be, the innocent shot/angle will only feed the sick and deprived. But censoring it only results in the immediate following shot to fall a bit flat. If you know the shot I speak of, let me know in a reply. I'm curious if anyone else knows of it.

As for your mention of being biased by nostalgia for the 2003 film, I get it. But never does your praise for this remarkable film come off as nostalgia-influenced or anything like "fan girl" gushing, as you give intelligent and well reasoned evidence to back your (modestly tempered, actually) enthusiasm. Personally, I have incredibly strong"nostalgia bias" for the 1953 Disney film, which was my first "favorite movie" and remained so throughout my childhood. But I believe the 2003 Universal film is, and ever will be, the most perfect version of the story ever portrayed on film. It will never be equaled. It's a pity that it didn't fare better upon release and has never received the wide acclaim it so richly deserves, but it's heartening to hear so many, like yourself, simply get it, and appreciate it for the piece of near flawless, magical cinema that it is.

The 2003 Peter Pan captured the true essence of the books in a way no other Peter Pan rendition really has. It fills me with a nostalgic sadness and longing, just like the book does. It is thoughtful, whimsical, beautiful, and wise. I ADORE how the 2003 movie uses so many of the lines from the book, word for word, and captures it all so perfectly. The book speaks to me very personally since it is, in its truest sense, a story about a young girl who is in the process of growing up. She is at the cusp of her womanhood, but she is still a child, desiring childish things, yet longing for more. A more she doesn't yet understand. There is allure in the excitement and energy of youth (Peter Pan embodies this), but there are things that perpetual youth, that silly boys, can't provide. Peter Pan cannot possibly ever give Wendy what she truly desires, and they both know it in the end. It's a tragic love story, but it isn't necessarily about a boy and a girl. It's about the ending of a relationship that a girl holds with her younger self. A farewell to youth. The new movie didn't capture any of that.The director had a gross misunderstanding of what the book was about.

Tbh, I like the 2003 Peter Pan movie more than I like even the animated movie. It really feels like for the 2003 live action, the creative team sat around a table, said "alright, what worked in the original movie? What didn't work? And what do we think is the most important essence that must be retained throughout the whole of the film?" It was like the animated movie was a rough draft, its critiques were used as feedback, and a more refined final product was eventually made as the live action. That's what live actions should be. But unfortunately, while animated movies choose to capture magic, wonder and a balance between emotional beats and lively humour and imagination, live actions are completely concerned with theatrics. A great example is Avatar: the last airbender remake, which is very theatrical and sacrifices a lot of the spirituality of the original series as a result. I don't have hope for the new blueprint for live action movies. This movie, however... will always be dear to me.

The soundtrack of the 2003 Peter Pan movie is a real marvel, it really makes you feel the fantasy and magic and the desire to fly.♥♥♥And another plus point he taught us to believe in fairies, "I do believe in fairies, I do, I do, I do".

I just watched the remake of Disney's Peter Pan and Wendy and I have to say that I'm really disappointed about it and agree with the opinions of a lot of people here. The 2003 version is way better and really invites you to dream. Therefore, I can only agree with all the points mentioned in the video. Both actors who played the character Peter Pan did a good job, but for me Jeremy Sumpter remains the only real-life Peter Pan. Sorry Disney but the real films are unfortunately worse and worse, with very few exceptions. Beauty and the Beast and Alladin. These realistic Disney Movies are the best in my opinion.

I agree, I think the Disney remakes somehow manage to get worse with each new movie (though I also like the Aladdin remake)

I can completely forgot the 2003 film existed. The last time I watched this movie was when I was six. I’m more grew up “hook” with Robin Williams, and I’m so glad no one tried to remake that flim because I absolutely adore it.

You've pointed out every single argument I had in my head. In particular, the part where you say: "Wendy being the mother of the group was an excellent contrast to Tiger Lily, who's an established warrior, and Tinker Bell, who acts like a child." OH MY GOSH, YES! Finally! Wendy has always been my favorite character because kindness is not a weakness. Strength comes in many forms, as do strong female characters. If they really wanted the line "I'm not even sure I want to be a mother" in the 2023 movie, Tiger Lily was right there! She would've been perfect for that line! As a child, I loved the contrast between the girls. It showed me there are many ways "to be," and they are all equally valid. As a mother, I respect Wendy even more-if that was even possible! Oh my, you need the thickest skin and the best of patience for that role, even when they are behaving well. I love how the 2003 version showed her strength while staying true to the kind of strength she portrays. I could go on, but you explained everything perfectly in your video. Thank you!

I feel like I'm going to die of cringe anytime you play any clip from the new version. The old one, much like many older movies in general (unpopular opinion, but the Star Wars Prequels for example), was cheesy, but it owned it and implemented it as style. The new one just tries to be so serious and "mature" and makes it so much worse when it fails miserably at doing so. It's like a child who knows they're a child and acts freely as such vs a child who wants to be an adult while ending up event more childish and immature. Just pure cringe. Also it's an absolute crime how the movie completely misses everything deep and every bit of meaning ingrained in the story, like the rite of passage of boyhood to menhood for males, in exchange for brainless current year ideological propaganda. Regarding that last part, Jordan Peterson has many quite interesting lectures on KZbin about Peter Pan (and the so called "Peter Pan syndrome"). In any case, congratulations on a very well articulated, edited and over all put together video that didn't waste a single second. Pax et bonum.

Thank you! 😊 You described the new movie perfectly--a child trying to act like an adult, versus the 2003 one that knows they're a child and doesn't try to be anything else. The new movie tries too hard to be "realistic" instead of embracing the fantastical, silly aspects of the story, which strips the movie of any emotional weight and all its endearing qualities. I haven't heard of Peter Pan Syndrome before, but that sounds interesting, I'll check it out!

I still remember watching promotional ads and interviews for the 2003 film back before it came out when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I remember seeing a segment on E entertainment Channel talking about the movie and showing parts of the scene with the Mermaids and talking about how it was a darker approach to the story. I remember wanting to watch it way back then. I god damn love that movie.

I remember the 2003 movie very fondly. Back then it was one of my favorite movies and I listened to the OST on my CD player on repeat for months. After all these years I can still hum one of the main themes. I think it was called "I Do Believe in Fairies". Current Disney movies don't have an ounce of that magic or love. They feel utterly soulless. I feel sorry for kids these days, but I guess they can always watch the treasure trove of old movies. So it's not all bad.

One thing I always appreciated was that Captain Hook and Mister Darling (the father) were both played by the same actor. That’s an old theater tradition and I liked the acknowledgment.

Once I watched the 2003´s movie when I was 7. It became my favourite movie for a while. It’s still quite important for me. The music is just incredible ❤

There's something I really like about your video, but I'm having trouble putting my finger on it. It might be how you gesture toward the...(I keep using the word) "magic" of the 2003 version.

I think nothing will ever beat the 2003 Peter Pan Movie. This is a Masterpiece of cinema and the only adaptation who seems to activly understood the Story and kept close to the original book
