Regarding the revenge angle of the Tarzan-Sabor fight, I always got the impression that Tarzan knew about Sabor eating Kala’s first child. The apes have a name for the cat, so clearly the beast had a reputation. When he deposited the body of Sabor in front of Kerchak, it felt like he was saying, “I have now avenged your son. Will you accept me in his place?”

Yeah I think Dinosaur has the highest kills of any children's movie. If we stop and think that every animal and dino are actual people. That film's body count is in the millions. Since it pretty much admits that life was nearly wiped out by that meteor shower.

When Phil Collins was given the job to write the score for this, he was in tremendous debt after settling alimony payments to his third exe wife. Not only was this film score his comeback. But it helped him financially in a huge way

There's something wrong with alimony putting you into debt. First of all, it's only supposed to be for people who can't support themselves. I don't know if Collins's third wife fit this catagory, but given that she got enough money to cause financial trouble for Collins, I'm betting the answer is no, that she could have supported herself without that much money. And even if he did have to pay to support his ex for a while, it shouldn't have been more than half of his income. Any case of alimony that caused that much debt shouldn't have been awarded.

Something I really love about Jane is that we don't see her being this graceful badass who adapts quickly in the jungle as first; she's introduced as being clumsy and it makes sense that considering the era and where/how she grew up she would have a hard time going through the jungle. She's like how Mulan was in her original animated adaption

Agreed. I felt she was a pretty solid representation of the character. (Book fan here.) In the books, Jane is...well, a wealthy but level headed American woman. She is afraid, but brave. She faints once or twice, but only in the instant before death. In other occasions she is facing down savage beasts with a stick, knowing she is about to die, but unwilling to not fight. She's smart and resourceful, but she knows *nothing* about surviving in the jungle. Alone, she would die many times, and with good reason; she is a city girl. In later books, when she's lived in Africa for a while and toughened up to some of the lifestyle, she's seen taking up firearms in her own defense, organizing a defense and more. This fun, out of her depth, smart, brave, kind woman is a good depiction in a lot of ways.

Yeah, honestly the whole female empowerment SJW angle Disney goes for today kind of ignores the fact that anybody, man or woman, needs time to adapt to new environments and situations. Jane's not a misogynist portrayal of a woman, but rather a natural portrayal of a fish out of water. Plus, she's pretty self-determined as a person, which makes her a stronger role model.

One problem with movies that are built with the intention of being anti-sexist, or whatever, that go in to create this mary sue, or do an all female version of a previous popular movie with male stars is that it often inadvertently turns out *more* sexist as a response.

Fun fact about leopards they are actually known to not always eat their kills right away. A lot of times they will hide them in trees were other predators can’t get them so they will have a good food source if they can’t find more. So the leopard not eating tarzans family right away (especially since they already were in a tree) is pretty cool

Gotta say, I prefer Tarzan's parents deaths to the leopard in this movie to the book. Tarzan's mother just dies (I think she was ill) and a grieving Tarzan's father has his neck neck snapped by Kerchak. Oh, and Kala is still carrying around her dead infant and switches its body with Tarzan.

Jane's one of my favorite Disney heroines. She's not just a Damsel. She's intelligent and curious, has a very kind heart and plays a very active role in the story. Also, I love how she's not "flawless." Most Disney Renaissance females up till then had been graceful, gorgeous, and sexy. Jane's clumsy, loud and tries to mimic monkeys when excited. Just love her.

We definitely need more compelling main female characters that don't look and act like flawless beauty queens. A side note here: I also like how though Jane is not drop dead gorgeous and is by no means elegant in how she conducts herself, a really attractive guy ends up falling in love with her, challenging the unspoken rule that beautiful people should only ever date/marry other beautiful people. We don't need to look or act perfect to be seen as beautiful to someone; a nice message that should be in more kids movies and tv shows.

I agree, Jane is one of the most charming and relatable female Disney characters ever. She's not the typical Disney princess trope, but just a more or less normal girl, but very likeable and believable - she's clumsy, cute, charming and funny, and you always feel with her and her struggles to get along in the jungle since her emotions and motivations are always believable and understandable.

For some reason, I was really amused by the moment where Clayton is trying to ask Tarzan where the gorillas are, and he loses his patience and shouts, "GO-RI-LLAS" which Tarzan imitates back to him. A lot of times, I think of it just from hearing the word "gorillas".

So for anyone who only saw the movie as well as this review when "skateboarding through the trees" was something they didn't expect to hear, that's because it was intentional. It's been ages, but there was some behind the scene features in one of the Disney VHS movies that talked about Tarzan and I think it was the head animator that talked about how watching his son skateboarding and snowboarding inspired him to make Tarzan move the way he did on the trees and branches. Creativity like this is sorely missed.

I feel like I have to say this every time the _Tarzan_ songs come up, so here we go again: *Don't blame Phil Collins for the way the music in this sorta-musical works.* In his autobiography, Phil talks about how he wrote the songs to be sung by the characters as a traditional musical. The director, as Doug mentioned, wasn't exactly on board with this, and he got his way in the end. Phil was immensely frustrated by this angle, partly because he knew _he'd_ be blamed for the awkwardness of shoehorning his music into a movie that was no longer a musical, and partly because he'd worked so hard on writing the best songs he could for a Disney movie, an entry into a pantheon of films that he had also grown up singing along to. Every single person I know who grew up with this movie all agree that Phil didn't have to go as hard as he did for this soundtrack, yet he went ahead wrote and performed some of the best music in the Disney catalogue. Phil also notes in his book that he finally got his way with the 2007 _Tarzan_ Broadway musical, which I've seen (not on Broadway, sadly). It's probably the definitive version of Disney's Tarzan... despite the fact that Clayton lives.

Hang on. Define definitive. Because to me, the definitive version of Tarzan is the original novelizations. The Disney version is fun, (and I havn't seen the stage version, though I'd like to), but the books are just so much deeper, darker, more impactful than any film or tv version released. I know so few have read them relative to watching various versions, but.... I mean, the author should be the definer of his character.

@@DrDolan2000 I mean...depends on the character. In the book Clayton was a fairly good guy. He's Tarzans' first cousin. His father is Tarzans' fathers' younger brother. Both Tarzan and John Clayton are named after Tarzans' father, the original John Clayton, Lord Greystoke. (Making all 3 of them John Clayton, Lord Greystoke at some point in the first book) He is in love with Jane, and, while susceptible to human jealousies and such, is overall a pretty good fellow. If it helps though, he *does* die...in the second book.

About Lord and Lady Greystoke's demise: Lord and Lady Greystoke's short visit to Africa. They had just survived a shipwreck, managed between the two of them to build an elaborate treehouse while sheltering and caring for a newborn, and likely had only just finished building said house when Sabor found them. To clarify, the treehouse was incredibly sophisticated, so with only two adults (one who also has to care for an infant) working on it, it would have taken at least a few months to build. Tarzan wasn't even old enough to walk when Kala found him, so it couldn't have been more than 3-4 months since the shipwreck. So Tarzan's parents probably only enjoyed their new home in finished form for a couple of weeks before Sabor arrived. To make things worse, since leopards are largely arboreal, *it's possible that all the activity of building the treehouse is what attracted Sabor's attention in the first place.* -While the film doesn't show her doing the deed, in a rather chilling alternate opening (illustrated only by storyboards) on the DVD and Blu-ray, we actually do get to see Sabor attack and kill Tarzan's father, though only through flashes illuminated by lightning strikes. The scene ends with Sabor dragging his body offscreen to feed. -Even worse, Tarzan's father is sadly looking at a photo of his wife before he figures out that Sabor is approaching, *all but stating that Sabor already got her and he's the only thing standing between this vicious predator and his infant son.*

I really, really love this movie. The Disney movies at the time weren’t too afraid to sometimes dip into darker territory and that left an impression on me. As for the songs, sometimes they can be a bit overbearing, but considering that he did what he was asked and that he sang the songs in FOUR additional languages I can’t be too mad and have nothing but respect for him

The “You’ll be in my Heart” song was, according to his daughter in a 2016 interview, written for her when she was a little. Fun fact, my husband really likes that song and when our first child was born I was teasing him in the hospital room afterwards that it was going to make him cry from now on, only for him to play it and I burst into tears. That was the first song she ever heard.

I'm 30 years old, and I still vividly remember myself having followed this film's production as a child with all the news coming out about it. Using mocap on skaters for tmwhat they called "tree-surfing", hiring Phil Collins for the songs, even interviews with the actors and singers that were cast for the Greek dubbing (no, I'm not from the US). I'm sorry, I can't help it, this is easily one of my absolute favourite Disney Classics. 12/10.

Being adopted and turning 7 when it came out it really touched me and made me cry and look at my adoption in a new way. Me and my mom would cuddle on the couch and watch..she was bawling her eyes out at the part where Katcha sings to Tarzan..this movie will always have a special place in my heart 🥺❤️

I've seen this movie a thousand times throughout my life, but the last time I watched it (a couple weeks ago) the scene of Tarzan and Kala saying goodbye made me cry for the first time. I hadn't ever thought about it before but this is one of the few mother-son relationships we see in a Disney movie and it's so well done.

I always found Clayton to be a memorable villain. Sure he was pretty generic, but the entire movie does a great job of showing how tense and dangerous the jungle truly is with the animals and the environment. Throwing a greedy poacher in the mix helped bring chaos to Tarzan's already complex struggle of communing with the jungle and his fellow humans.

For me Clayton's death is the most poetic death of any Disney villain. By being hung by a vine it symbolizes that he has been executed for breaking the law of the jungle. The only thing that could have beat it if the Leapord survived her fight with Tarzan and killed Clayton herself.

And looking back, his death has to be one of the more gruesome of the Disney villains. Even if you only see the shadow briefly. And yes, he did break the laws of the jungle as many moments showed, but especially the scene when he cut the vines and Tarzan warned him not to because he knew what would happen. That scene always got me, the guy who wanted to kidnap the gorillas, and killed Kerchak (though he didn’t succumb to his wound until after Clayton died) and yet Tarzan tried to warn him not to keep cutting the vines because he knew the fate that awaited him

I remember feeling like this movie was the beginning of something new. The animation and Phil Colins' music really fills me with such positivity, and it throws me back to an Era that never got a chance to fully shine. I had just turned 10 when this came out and it always makes me feel good. Sadly this was one of the last good things to happen before the tragedy of 911, and thus the era came to an abrupt end. But I will always remember Tarzan as the beginning of a future yet to be.

I don't know if the more serious style would ever take off. Atlantis and Treasure Island were infamous disappointments. Newcomer Dreamwork found great success in Shrek, which was a silly satire. Disney itself would toil aimlessly until it revisited the princess formula.

The music is good. My wife sang my first kid to sleep with that Tarzan lullaby, so I have post Tarzan movie nastalgia for that song. The problem was, it doesn’t really connect with the story. I mean a disembodied voice singing it instead of the characters. The “comedy” is just bad. I couldn’t stand the supporting gorillas scenes. Makes me feel all the more for Tarzan being stuck with them for so long…

Phil Collins is my favorite musician and his music is so damn masterful. The fact that he sang his songs in multiple languages for this film for the international audience is unbelievable levels. I grew up with this film and the soundtrack. This was my first introduction to Phil Collins before diving into his previous catalog later on in my life.

12:20 I mean, the fight with the leopard wasn't just about getting revenge, it was also about protecting his family AND getting acceptance from his father, both of which he accomplishes. Even after the humans arrive, Kerchak is much more mellow around Tarzan, and even when Tarzan betrays his trust and shows the humans to the gorilla's location, he isn't mad at him, he doesn't lash out at him, calling him a freak who'll never be one of them or something, he's just disappointed in Tarzan.

To Tarzan he killed Sabor because she was a threat. To us, not only because she was a threat, but also as avenging his parents’ deaths caused by Sabor

The way Tarzan moves through the jungle is still so incredible, he is strong, agile, graceful, and fast, and the animation is absolutely stunning. Then Jane gets dropped into his arms and he suddenly has to adjust to her, and the physical comedy and timing is done just as well. It’s truly unique, and everything about it is just done so fluidly that it is always exciting. Also, Jane is a total smokeshow, and her chemistry with Tarzan is kinda insane. It’s like the two of them are perpetually set to “smolder.”

For me, I grew up with this. As a child, the songs helped me understand the movie better; the balance of light fun and chilling dark makes this movie a well-balanced production. And when it needs to be serious, it is. The transition from young Tarzan and Kala talking is great! It helps you feel his newfound determination and to literally not sit in the mud anymore and actually have a goal.

I think Jane was a pleasant addition. I liked the animation in this film. Tarzan and Jane seem more like Friends. I liked watching Tarzan grow up and seeing the jungle scenery. The ending was what "Little Mermaid" fans wanted for Ariel. It is fun to see Jane become more adventurous even though she is not as experienced as the rest of the characters. She comes into her own.

It would have been better without Clayton as a villain. In the book, Clayton is his older brother. Maybe they could have explored that relationship. They find the treehouse and Clayton finds evidence of his parents who were supposedly killed on a shipwreck while he survived or might have been away at boarding school. Maybe he could have been there looking for what happened to his family and discovers he’s not really alone and his brother needs him. Ooo, I smell a fanfic…

I remember seeing this in theaters and love the soundtrack. It was my first full movie soundtrack I would listen to, even the instrumental tracks. I also played the Gameboy game over and over, though could never beat it. This was another movie that Disney made into a Broadway stage musical. The characters do sing the songs in that version. Phil Collins also wrote the music for that and the original songs for the show aren't that bad. They definitely tell more of what the characters are thinking.

To me, the Phil Collins songs were a breath of fresh air for Disney, to see a Disney film where the characters weren’t singing how they felt in the moment. Two Worlds in particular is my favorite, and the score and lyrics accompanying the animation always gives me that good shiver on the back of my neck when you see a powerfully emotional scene in a movie or whatever. Though, I can understand Critic’s hate for the songs as well. And the vine surfing/parkour-like animation style is still so cool and unique. It would be cool to see that again and evolved further with today’s animation. Now, Critic, review Treasure Planet.

I saw this in School and it's pretty impressive! Love the usage of Phil Collins song, "You'll be in my heart," at the end credits, which ended up winning the Oscar for Best Original Song. They even did a direct-to-DVD sequel, TARZAN 2, which was more like a prequel. There was a sequel TV series, The Legend of Tarzan.

Are we not gonna acknowledge that not only did Tarzan try to warn Clayton about what he was doing despite what Clayton was trying to kill him AND kidnap his family...But you could see the obvious shock when he saw Clayton's swinging body. It's one of the few times the hero doesn't celebrate the villain dying: They wanted to defeat them, yes, but that doesn't mean they _wanted_ to kill them.

Yeah he even said he didn’t want to be like Clayton a few moments ago. He had Clayton’s gun, was pointing it directly at his throat, but still didn’t shoot. He wanted to do this a different way. Clayton was blinded by his anger, he wanted to kill Tarzan and the vines restrained him. He thought he’d just free himself seeing as he could easily cut them then he could dispatch his foe. Unfortunately he failed to notice those vines were his only support and that one was wrapped around his neck.

We got there way too early to get good seats and the theater played some behind the scenes sneak peek of the movie and I remember how cool it was that the animators took inspiration for how Tarzan glides along the trees from surfers. I remember watching Tarzan in theaters when I was 8 years old in 1999. One of the reasons why I wanted to see this film was because it reminded me of George of the Jungle. Ironically enough, both movies were made by Disney. I think Tarzan is one of the most Underrated Disney movies. As a 90s kid, I say it is one of my favorite memories of going to see a Disney film in theaters. As far as Phil Collins is concerned, I understand why you didn't think his songs fit into this film. However, I think it was a pretty cool choice for the soundtrack of Tarzan. And look at it this way Doug, it could have been worse. I rather have Phil Collins singing instead of Bruce Springsteen. @@saveriopanaccione996 Maybe the reason for the Phil Collin songs, is because Disney wanted to lazy and have Phil Collins do all the work, so they don't have to find singers for the characters? I doubt Tony Goldwyn can sing.

I watched this movie when it came out in theaters and I loved the heck out of this film mostly because of the animation and I saw behind the scene on how they animated Tarzen moving through the jungle like a surfure, skater and roller blader as I got older I appreciate the dark scene and well there were cheesy moments I still enjoy it

I was 18 when this came out. I remember being very impressed with Tarzan's muscles. I also loved that Jane had bad hair days.

I think it's Jane's hair that is pretty average for Disney but she also keeps a full face of makeup in tact in the jungle. She's actually a descendant of Belle and the beast, which is where her curiosity for animals comes from. It's also why Mrs. Potts and Chip are in the movie!

I grew up with this movie and it's one of my favorite Disney films. I understand why you don't like Phil Collins, music is a very subjective thing but to me, this soundtrack is one this most memorable. Lastly, I think Tarzan is one of the more underrated films of it's era, it may not be a masterpiece but I say the Disney Renaissance ended on a pretty high note.

This movie is always hold bittersweet memories for me. It came out during my senior year of high school so it not only represented the end of the 20th century and the Disney Renaissance period, but also the end to my childhood

There's actually a song when kala shows tarzan his parents home in the musical, which honestly i think is the bomb and is kinda needed with the musical with it being on stage and body language and emotions being more muted due to that

I like how scary and intimidating they made the leopard seem until it’s death, it added a sense of weight when Tarzan finally killed it

Sabor is OP, I tell ya. She moves extremely fast and she has the strength to easily defeat gorillas, real leopards do prey on gorillas but usually only babies and females, sometimes they can kill silverbacks but with extreme difficulty. Sabor, however, defeated Kerchak in seconds and she would have killed him if not for Tarzan intervening. Heck, Tantor is afraid of Sabor. Tantor. The ELEPHANT. Also, Sabor was already an adult when Tarzan was a baby, but when Tarzan was a fully grown man, Sabor was STILL ALIVE and in her prime, a regular leopard can't live that long but Sabor did. Seriously, Sabor is an absolute monster, it took a manmade object like a spear to slay her once and for all, nothing in nature could stop her.
