As someone who's currently reading the original book (im currently at the part where Jane and company have been just introduced) i gotta say that based on what i read (or rather heard since im doing it via audiobook) Golden Film's version is actually significantly more faitfull than Disney's version: the mutiny on the boat by the crew, the apes having their own conflicts parallel to the humans, Tarzan learning to write via reading books on his parent's hutt, Tarzan confronting native Africans over Kala being in danger (she actually gets killed by a lone hunter and in furious retaliation Tarzan tracks down the hunter and kills him for revenge) and stealing arrows from their village and even saying outloud to the apes that he's superior to them when learning that he's in fact a man. However, just because an adaptation is faithfull to the source material doesnt always necessarily make it entertaining and even if the Disney movie distanced itself from the book further than the Golden Films' one it goes without saying that the former is objectively the superior movie with the way it shows those creative coices and is actually one of my favorite animated movies. Fun review too! I know that this video is a handful years old but this review was well done enough for me to leave my thoughts on the subject lmao, especially now that im more aware of how the book goes down like. Btw, fun fact: another bit of accuracy the Golden Films version got right is how in the book Jane and Porter did in fact had a maid named Esmeralda. However i bring this particular bit up because in the book Esmeralda was actually a black woman who was a slave to the Porters. ...yeah this and many other details are good reminders of how this story is a product of its time, which is why the Disney version cut out having black people in there in its entirety, which was really a wise decision from the creators' behalf.

So here's a bit of a brain twister. In both this version and Disney one, Kerchak is written as Kala's mate and Tarzan's distant father figure. In the books, Kerchak was neither and more of an abusive leader of the apes - kind of a Scar like tyrant- with Tarzan's adoptive father being an ape called Tublat. Disney gave Tublat's role and personality to its version of Kerchak. In the sequel series Disney included it's version of Tublat, and amusingly gave him Kerchak's personality from the books. What gets double amusing is Golden Film's Kerchak once again gets Tunlat's role as Kala's mate, but his personality and antagonist is still closer to his book counterpart.

I see this movie is carrying on that fine tradition of "tribal cave people learning incredibly complex things overnight" which reached it's pinnacle with Battlefield Earth and the fighter jets. Still, by this movie's logic Tarzan would probably have that mastered in a couple of hours. And still found time to keep that flowing mane of his gloriously straight and silky. The bastard.

Found this video/channel bc I wondered how many people on KZbin are aware of this busted ass movie classic and I don’t regret it. You’ve got a new sub dude. (also fun fact: this movie supposedly came out BEFORE Disney’s Tarzan. It was originally in production in 1997, supposedly. This movie was released March 1999 ( *supposedly* ) while the Disney Tarzan was released in June of 1999. And I don’t know *how* but they released this movie in at least more than one language since I own a completely Dutch copy.)

Well, Tarzan is technically trademarked by ERB inc, thus only certain expressions of him are in the public domain for most countries except for the USA (the infamous work for hire laws are the main culprit in said country.), Jamaica and Mexico (both countries are mostly trying to protect their cultures anyway. But the problem is that both the major corporations and the elite that runs them have the rights to adapt most of the 20th Century Mexican made works for life plus 95 or 100 years if they’re copyrighted in both countries!).

How would you feel if I had a small 2D animation buisness, not even in HollyWood and making R rated silent animated short films just for the enjoyment of art, fun and to make viewers happy all for free? My motivation for that is that I wish there were things such as that. Has any one ever thought of making a small buisness such as that? If not, would it influence them? And if my animated shorts were made by a small buisness, could I at lest get them shown in dollar theaters for cheap? Just like Disney, I wouldn't make animation to make money, I would make money to make animation.
