as some internet stranger put it if the game moves spikes into you (wind, moving block), you dont die if you move yourself into spikes (fall, dash etc) you die cause you cant die to spikes if youre moving in the direction theyre facing

Did you mean when the game moves you into a spike because I don't believe the game ever moves a spike into you with wind or a moving block? Sorry if this comes off as rude I'm just interested to learn more about game mechanics. Also I thought the reason it wasn't killing her was because the hitbox is bigger than the hurtbox allowing Madeline to jump off the spike because the floor is in her hitbox but not die because the spike isn't in her hurtbox.

@@_qwerty_3545 this phenomena isn't limited to just wind. If you go on a rising platform like the ones in golden ridge, you can spam jump and not die from the spikes. This is also the same with wind going sideways, in 4c on the last screen, there are a few rocks with spikes on them which you can just spam jump when the wind pushes you into them and survive. I'm not sure if it's intended or not but it's funny anyway.

The extra dash was only used 31 times after it was unlocked. Which is kinda impressive considering most of the places past that point that were designed with dashing in mind were made to utilize 2 dashes. 31 / 179 were a red hair dashes meaning a ratio of 31 doubles to 117 singles

What's with the stuttery movement in Chapter 4? Is it faster against headwind?

It is! Speed and velocity are calculated separately, where wind decreases your velocity, and velocity is how fast you actually move. When you crouch, wind is ignored, so your speed and velocity are the same (and thus faster). When you uncrouch, your speed returns to max, but your velocity is lowered by the wind again. You can repeat this indefinitely to go fast and look ridiculous at the same time!

Pausing allows you to hold jump without jumping. When you hold jump with low vertical speed, it makes Madeline kinda floaty (ie she falls more slowly) giving the height needed to get the ceiling-pop after and clear the gap.

Honestly, I don't know. I haven't worked on this in well over a year, so I'm very out of the loop. I recall there being an unlisted update to this somewhere but I can't find it again, and it was definitely pre-spinner stunning. They might be working on it on the Celeste challenges discord.

Magic of the Multi-boost. Every climb-jump adds 30 speed to Maddy, and that speed is kept as long as she doesn't hit a wall for more than 5 frames. In both of these cases, she climb-jumps towards the block, but doesn't hit the block as the block moves 1 pixel away from her in the same frame. At 13:28, four climb-jumps are done (using all of your stamina), and then you get an extra boost by landing on the moving block. At 14:12, four climb-jumps are done, and then she lands on the ground, refreshing her stamina, and this is repeated to build up ridiculous speed without dashing.

If you enter spikes while moving away from them, they don't kill Madeline. What the TAS does is enter the spikes moving away, and then climbjump towards the spikes to make sure the speed is low, but still away from the spikes. This means the climbjump can stay within the spikes, and a neutral jump can be done off the spikes later. Unfortunately, this can't be done indefinitely as Madeline must always be moving, and will eventually leave the spike hitbox. Realistically the longest it can be performed for is ~20 frames.

If the zipper is travelling at the right speed, you can jump from it a second time on the next frame to get an additional boost. It's similar to the trick explained in a response to Clayton's comment, but because this is the front side of the moving block it isn't possible to get more than two boosts (iirc)

While moving away from the wall, you can climbjump and move towards the spikes in a way that makes your horizontal velocity very low but not quite in the direction of the spikes. By alternating left and right every frame you can maintain this low velocity to avoid dying to the spikes, then neutral jump at the top to gain even more height, clearing the spike wall.

TAS stands for Tool-Assisted Speedrun/Superplay. It's a series of inputs created with frame advance and savestates. When given to the game, the game reads the inputs and plays itself. There is a bot called TASBot, but it's merely a visual way of seeing the inputs as they're read.

With the right alignment you can climbjump on the pixel beneath a wall and go underneath it. This is known as a ceilingpop and it's done twice here to reach the bubble.

@@citriun3727 There are! As of the 1.4.0.0 update, another dash can be saved in 5A depths by doing a ceilingpop. This wasn't possible before due to the killplane being too high, but 1.4.0.0 lowered it by 4 pixels. It's also used later in 5A under a spiked wall, and I imagine it's used in many other places to save time that don't save a dash.
