[TAS] DKC2(GBA) - 102% Tool-assisted Speedrun

After quite some time I finally got this TAS done.
There were a lot of elements that made this a kinda tedious project to work on, especially the Swanky and Funky mini-games.
After my any% TAS I have been able to fix some of the smaller mistakes I noticed. However, while watching this I noticed some new things that I could've done better. Nothing too serious, but still improvements.
Some highlights of this TAS are defintely:
Parrot Chute Panic, Web Woods, Toxic Tower, Animal Antics, Black Ice Battle. Of course the rest is worth watching nonetheless.
As for the mini-games, the most fun ones to work on were the Expresso-races at Cranky's, even though I had to distribute more feathers into the skill set than I actually planned to. It's not a big deal tho, only a matter of like 10 frames that I needed for it, and it helped a lot in the later races. I thought Strength could be skipped, but I got pushed away from helpful power-ups or acceleration pads too badly which would've costed me way more time than skilling Strength did.
The games at Funky's were annoying, not gonna lie. Especially the physics of the gyrocopter made it very difficult to move in precise ways.
To achieve 102% completion, you need to:
- beat every stage (and therefore obtain all Krem-Coins)
- collect all 68 DK-Coins
- collect all 40 Golden Feathers
- collect all 52 Cameras

Visually, and prob the best sounding of the GBA DKC ports, I dont like the changes even if the map screen was changed to make it more visible on a smaller, unlit handheld screen. Otherwise, ain't bad.

1:54:14 There is a code that causes the player to get the 78% of this videogame at once. That code is called FREEDOM. 2:07:31 In order to get the rest of this videogame, the player must get all gold DK Coins.

You need to simply find all bonuses except the ones in Lost World, then beat the 5 Lost World stages to unlock this stage. You do not have to find any DK Coins by any means.

Update: that also means that the minimum % needed to unlock Lost World is 77%, where the final boss gives you the 78th%. Also, the TAS doesn't use the FREEDOM cheat code because it's, well, a cheat code. It is true that it would be much faster with the cheat code though.

So, I've always been hearing that dkc2 is a popular game to speedrun but, is the GBA version good enough to speedrun too? Like, is it good enough gameplay wise? Even if visually and soynd-wise it's a bit downgraded i mean

It's an entirely different run compared to the SNES version. And I've been hearing the visuals/audio-stuff point to an extend over the years. It seems like people seem to expect the GBA to be able to bring the exact same quality as the SNES. Not gonna say anything else about that. The gameplay differs a lot, and reaches from missing wrong warp techniques over infinite rolling, etc. If it is "good enough" is nothing but a matter of perspective. For me, they were more than good enough. It was a lot of fun.

I think I used the warp because there is a camera hidden in one of the bonus stages. And I couldn't collect it right away because I need to visit Wrinkly Kong first, so I would have to play the stage pretty much twice just to grab the camera on a second visit. Instead I warp first, and then play the stage once to grab everything in one go

When you really love a game, you make a port about this good. It reminds me of how the MHA anime adapted Season 1. Read it for yourself. Some of the moments you recall fondest from the show aren't there!

Nope, the KONG-letters are not required for 102%, they would simply provide some extra lifes. Only in the first game's remake for the GBA you need them to get one of the cameras. :)

@@DerAvanor Do the secret boss stages in this game and 3 GBA increase percentage? They don't drop any collectible in these versions

@@veloxplayer098yeeeah7 I dont know for DKC2 but in DKC3 (GBA), I did everything including collecting all the birds without beating the secret boss and nothing happened. I had to beat him and instantly after leaving, I have been teleported to Wrinkly and the ending started.

21:25 The going left and then right to delay spawning the pufferfish was honestly quite smart. That one was completely unexpected. Although after a bit of testing it did turn out slower by 8 frames, unfortunately. Still a very cool idea.

Apparently, the collecting feather at 27:00 seems to only be possible when Dixie is the currently controlled character. The hitbox for throwing Dixie seems to be smaller than Dixie. Or Dixie throws Diddy higher, I don't know. The fastest movement here is to do everything as if you're solo Diddy: go to the barrels on the right and shoot yourself into the feather, then go back to the barrels on the right. This is 32 frames faster than going into the Dixie barrel.

48:42 - Getting stuck to the ceiling here was actually pretty smart lol, this saves 8 frames over just holding left. That's pretty neat.

If i didn’t own a snes,then i pronably would,ve accepted this version,but since i do own a snes along with this game,i don’t accept this version,i don’t care about it’s extra’s or minor improvements,i also really hate the added storyline at the beginning and those new map screens.
