It's so satisfying to see a perfect TAS setup But would there be a way to have a 156 combo at the end or would that take away too much from the combo time bonus points?

A straight 156 combo on Waterworld isn't really possible due to the shadow spawn zones that need manipulating. And also, for bonus chests, it's much better to break a combo and gather enemies so you get the maximum possible kills during the chest.

For some reason on this stage if you shoot a ganado in the kneecaps aiming downward it gives thrust punch option. The next kill after the one your timestamp I also kneecap and it again gives "thrust punch" option, but as I aim higher it gives "chikyo chagi" option and I do the axe kick. Watch at .25x speed

According to the Mercenaries Score guide on GameFAQs, to earn maximum score, you need to build combos of 10 or above and kill as much enemies during bonus chests. If he made one continues combo of 156 and killed the same amount of enemies (45+45+35=125) during bonus chests, he would get the same mount of score. Since he needed to do various kinds of manipulations with enemy spawn and crowd gathering in order to kill as much enemies of bonus chests as possible, he didn't take the path of one continues combo. It was too difficult to archive such a result.

It's a TAS, which means "Tool Assist Speedrun." It's kind of like a bot or something. What a TAS does is make a frame perfect speedrun. It's supposed to be educational, not cheating if that's what you're thinking.

First of all this is a tool-assisted run on an emulator, so he basically has a time machine to manipulate the game's time at his will. In other words, he never played this good in a single run, he just rewinded time every time he failed to do something. So your question should be, how many times did he have to rewind time? Probably hundreds.

It's a tool assisted speedrun, so it's not about practicing the stage in real-time again and again, it's about taking advantage of modern emulators to do frame perfect control, route optimization, and a lot of re-records. Still takes a lot of work, but not the same as a real-time run.
