nice take on TAS tbh. I love TAS but it's going to be controversial because people will abuse it. Either way, best we can do is hope that moderation and cheat detecting tools are developed and implemented faster than cheating and faking tools can appear. It's probably impossible as you can't predict every cheating method but it should be the goal moving forward.
@luw
@luw 2 жыл бұрын
i doubt tas would be used for cheating in online games, tas is just prerecorded moves, so u wouldn't even be able to use it to cheat, even the slightest positioning will make the TAS not work. Also TAS only meaning in life is to be abused, to discover the game limits.
@rip_8114
@rip_8114 2 жыл бұрын
@@luw I guess it depends on what you call a TAS. The term stands for "tool assisted speedrun" so technically it doesn't apply to rocket league except for training packs really. You could argue that bots are TAS because they are a tool assisted way to explore and optimize gameplay which is what TAS was originally intended for. I think it's easier to put everything in the same basket and that way we can talk about the issue of cheating and scamming in a more intuitive way. The thing is that TAS has been used widely in deterministic straight forward games, but roctket league is so different that it's hard to compare.

@@rip_8114 TAS, whilst technically meaning any Tool assisted runs, has been largely quantified to frame by frame input in solo speedruns. To be able to use anything like a TAS in a live online game, you'd 1) Have to make sure it's undetectable and remains that way 2) Have a script ready to be fired for every position, angle, relation to the ball, opponents, team mates etc at all times . Essentially, you'd need an AI that's smart enough, which already exists and KZbinr have pranked people, but again not perfect and many players can still out smart and out play those AIs. TAS is not a concern apart from people faking clips for clout and money. AT this point, I think any clips lose their credibility unless they have an input display on the clip

You'll always still need a level of creativity and some skill even with TAS, but I think it would be cool to see people embrace it by pulling off the weirdest things with the in-game physics... I personally think that Halfway Dead has the most entertaining idea for TAS currently; speedrunning various packs and courses. I want to add a couple of points: 1. If you change game speed with anything but BakkesMod, the indicator will not flash at a different speed. If anyone believes that they can detect cheaters in any offline activity purely based on these kinds of indicators, they have to be very naive. The only way to make sure that games are not played in slow motion and other cheats is to force people to have a controller cam like other speedrunning communities. 2. I have not looked at that pinch shot in detail myself, but I have to just point out that RL physics are pretty weird and I would not classify a pinch shot that got 3 ticks of acceleration necessarily as fake. If the acceleration happens a tenth of a second later then it is definitely fake, but 3 ticks in a row may be possible even if that's not the norm. For reference, when you hit the ball in the middle of the air, you only expect one contact because you don't push it against an object so it will just fly away from you immediately when you touch it. RL cars or the ball are not squishy after all. However, what I found during my TAS of the training pack, was that I had 2 touches on my last shot. I was attempting the final part over and over again to get as much power as possible and randomly got 15kph more on a shot. Once I investigated that shot, I found that the ball accelerates two ticks in a row, meaning that I must've touched it two ticks in a row. 3. Online: TAS requires the starting state of everything to be identical. That means, even in theory, you can only do it on kickoff. So you can ruin any attempts at cheating in online freestyle competitions by just going for the kickoff. You will never be able to get the game back into the same state again. In comp games that means that in theory people might be able to get more consistent kickoffs, but that can usually be countered by creative kickoffs. Also, the way they're currently programmed, it cannot work in online games. You'd have to do it differently by editing network packets or something, and even then the difference between AMD and Intel Servers could ruin the TAS.
@Rocket_Sledge
@Rocket_Sledge 2 жыл бұрын
Fortunately I think the overlap of players that want to cheat clips in RL and those that have the abilities and desire to make mods outside of BakkesMod is usually very small. Thus you usually end up with the "kids" that can only use already available plugins that are easier to detect.

You are right and I think the Trackmania TAS history is such a good blueprint for the RL community and devs to use. From what I remember it had the exact same fear and speculation when it really started to emerge. And to be fair there were bad actors trying to fake WRs and succeeding. But the community continuously evolves to protect itself and TAS expands our understanding of mechanics. Also it's not a matter of should it be allowed, people will find a way regardless, so it's better to figure out how to cut its nefarious use to a minimum and enjoy the new mechs.

I'm glad you mentioned Trackmania in this video, it's a very important piece of the puzzle, TAS is a very entertaining thing when it's put in context, and used to its full potential, while it has had some issues with the Trackmania replays, Rocket League isn't all about speedrunning times or the replays, and even freestyle being all about the shot, there will still be huge value held on people that can pull off sick shots live. If TAS becomes a big part of the freestyle community, and attracts its own viewership, it makes it an incentive for those people to stop trying to fake shots, and actually do good TAS content.

TAS in the original super Mario bros was one of the greatest developments in the speedrunning scene there, allowing players to have a bench match to strive for “perfection”. I’ve always loved watching TAS videos but nothing will ever compare to being live on Kosmic’s stream while he beats the world record himself after hours and years of grinding. This won’t take away from the community will add to it, giving high level players new tools to elevate their game and create “perfect” mechanics to strive for. For the people using it to scam others, people be like that their name gets tainted and no one will trust what they put out anymore. High level players understand the games on a level the other 99.99% cannot fathom. Don’t worry, fakes will be routed out and disbarred.

I think you freestyling in RL and drifting have things in common. Both judge based style sports. One of the most exciting things about tandem drifting is knowing there’s humans behind the wheel. There’s been videos of robot driven vehicles drifting but it’s not the same. It’s cool to see a robot run a perfect line once, but very boring after a while. It’s more impressive and exciting to see a driver do the same consistently. I’m sure TAS while have it’s place. But, overall I think it’ll just become a fun niche thing and freestyling will continue to grow as is. With players pushing each other to get better the same way drivers do at the track.

I'm developing my own TAS + bot system. I will not be releasing this system due to what people have already done with TAS tools. I currently have input recording and splicing down, and as the program emulates a controller input, it will show on a gamepad viewer. As far as the computer knows, the USB stick with the program on it is a controller. This is a virtual controller I can write macros to, and then edit those macros in software to get perfect timing of things. I can also record inputs at different speeds. I have a universal speed variable that allows me to scale the macro to any speed I want. 1 is default game speed, and I typically record tests at 0.5 for half speed, so I can have extra precision in the inputs I want to test. Another interesting thing I have found is that being able to switch from keyboard to controller and back has its advantages, but this comment is already a wall, so I won't go over it much further now.

Couple things you missed about TAS, or maybe I should say rephrased, it's main use in the speedrunning community is finding ways to beat a game in it's potentially fastest way possible which doesn't always mean it can't be humanly impossible. Many speedruns in various games use certain paths to figure out if a certain trick, glitch, shortcut, or options can even be done with a set input. While it can be optimized to the impossible fastest way, most of the time it's to figure out if a real person can do it in a reasonable high skill way. Or simulating thousand of runs for specific parameters. There's always cheating in speedrunning records and besides having experts figuring out fake from real ones, there are also other tools in place that help detect cheaters, such as inputs made by the peripherals used that are recorded with precise accuracy that shows if inputs they're using is even humanly possible. This is something that can easily show if speedruns are faked with TAS or not and i'd say even in RL. The only issue is that there would need to be a certain program used that can detect it that people would have to have before even attempting a speedrun and submitting, or have it only sent in log wise with a replay straight from RL, instead of just recording it on OBS or w.e. other recording software. As an enjoyer of speedrunning, TAS is a wonderful thing. That being said, people who use TAS and claim they're the ones doing the gameplay are scum and trash. TAS is for the people who want to see a game pushed to it's absolute limits. I liked the Trackmania clip that you link and I'm sure you know they had a big cheating scandal with some of their WR holders, so hopefully we don't have too many people trying to abuse it for fame and subs as it will come back to bite them. SM64 would've been another good game for a TAS clip, too. The problem is a lot of people are easily impressionable and not super knowledgeable at the same time, so people using TAS to make nice shots and then not labeling it as a TAS in the video are going to have people think they are gods, like with Tyrese as you were showing. Content creators for RL need to be on the same page that anyone using TAS for clips needs to label it as such in order to avoid any confusion. As far as WRs go, TAS can have their own separate category like they do in other games. WR held by humans can still be fought over by humans, while the TAS side of things will be trying to edge out frames over one another. This can also open up the potential to find new mechanics possibly.

I'm all for people using TAS to see what could be accomplished with perfect inputs. However, using TAS to cheat records, selling other people's programs for a profit, and to claim like a section of TASed gameplay has been frowned upon for years in the Minecraft, Terraria, and Trackmania communities. It will most likely have a similar result in Rocket League as it already has in these games, in which the community will combat the development of cheating using TAS.

As a TrackMania player I think TAS is mostly a good thing, firstly for showing things that wouldn't be humanly possible and also for theorizing potential shortcuts in TrackMania or other tricks in rocket league, the rules regarding WR might have to be updated with things like a controller cam or something like that but I don't see that as an issue

just something to note: in many games, TAS is made entering inputs frame by frame, which allows them to do completely inhuman things like enter forward and back alternating every other frame at 60fps. I'd be really interested to see if/how broken RL could get with frame by frame inputs like that.
@DigitalJedi
@DigitalJedi 2 жыл бұрын
RL handles fast inputs surprisingly well. I've tested steering back and forth at 30hz (60 inputs / second) and it had no problem with it. I imagine that if you get above the physics tick rate of 120hz though (240 inputs / second in my steering case) it would get interesting though.

One of the bigger signs of the people are cheating is that if these people were this good in actual live shots, you would be seeing them do these in world class competitions like the Ford Freestyling tournaments. But you know why they aren't? Cause they can't do any of it legit, it's all fake. If they were put on the spot to do even half of what they say they can do legit, they'll just fly around and not even get close.

I'm glad to see at least some justice has been served here, terrible that people are trying to scam people though I also plan to release my own TAS thing using RL bot. Pretty much you just set up inputs in a file and the bot executes them for you. This means you don't need to be able to do any part of the original shot to use this. You could do 30 flip resets in a row without being able to do 1 yourself. I don't know if I'm going to be able to pull this off though and I'm worried about people cheating with this. Luckily RL bot uses an offline only version of rocket league so it's impossible for it to be brought into competitive and even if that did happen it'd be useless since it also needs a static start for probably at least 15 seconds. I'm more concerned about people faking clips with this, I'll def try and do something to prevent that before releasing it. I have no idea if I'll be able to do this but if I can I won't be releasing it for a while. Anyway if you'd be interested in seeing this like this comment and/or reply with your thoughts.

Sledge, you should look into freestylers stalling with one button, a while ago I was looking into it and was kind of shocked with how many freestylers seemed to be using it. I know they’re really good, but when you look at some of their controller overlays it looks super fishy. Specifically maktuf was one who seemed weird to me. I looked up how to do it myself and you can paste a command into your game files which allows you to stall w one button in epic, or use the steam controller software. When comparing what the stall looked like on his with the one on mine with the one button stall they looked super similar even though he says he doesn’t do it with one button. The joystick gets clicked and a perfect stall is done. I get he’s really good, but the consistency is almost inhuman with how perfect the input is. I had it setup how I thought he had it with stalling being on left joystick. I’m probably reaching, but still on the topic of cheating, it might be worth someone like you looking into as you’re more connected and are probably better suited to look into something like this. Would love to hear your input, and great vid.

How would tas be used in a competitive game? I don’t understand, you can change the game speed in an online match?
@Rocket_Sledge
@Rocket_Sledge Жыл бұрын
The idea is that you create the shot at slow speed in a private match, but then play it back in a real game. But it's use would be very limited because a shot is made based on a stationary ball start, so TAS shots in competitve are pretty much impossible. You TAS a kickoff perhaps, but that has always been a possibility even before TAS came around.
