This is quite the first project to work on! I began this TAS when I had no notions about how it works but after months of learning the result is better than all of us anticipated. I will be working on more speedruns like this in the near future for other categories but I won't reveal my plans yet as I am unsure about what to do next. We'll just have to wait and see.

It just happens that barrels are broken and out-of-bounds actions are really, _really_ broken. Though even then, what that translates to for this run is mostly glitched movement behavior, as I recall. Tbh would be pretty interesting to see this without the corrupted visuals-it would still look pretty strange, but a lot more clear what's happening.

Superstar Saga but Cackletta skips to plan C, Fawful goes missing, Bowser still has a bad trip to Bean Bean, and Mario uses his eldritch speedrunning powers to bend space-time while Luigi feeds him syrup. This'd make one hilarious TerminalMontage video! Fantastic TAS! Never knew you could break SS that badly but then again, I need to read up on the glitches and replay SS some time.

I just love how, up through the third quarter, the game is more or less a vanilla playthrough with only minor bits and pieces being broken, and then the game just does a triple backflip summersault off the diving board and hits face-first into the deep-end.

46:06 If Peach has teleportation powers, why doesn’t she just teleport out of Bowser’s cage and back to her castle? Or maybe she does… but as soon as Mario enters the final stage, she just teleports back to her cage and act like she’s been there all the time.

I assume the game only checks if Peach is on your shoulders back or not, and it dosen't account for how much progresion of the has been done so far until Bowser's Castle. I think that's maybe how works. 🤔

The game assumes that you can't possibly enter Little Fungitown without starting the peach escort quest and defeating Trunkle, because of this it doesn't bother checking if you actually did it or not, so no matter how you enter Fungitown, Peach will always be there in the cutscene on the first visit. After we get the Mush Badge we go to Teehee Valley. On the way to Birdo we teleport past a rock and a big wall to reach the pipe. This teleport skips over 70% of the game because it skips everything from Chucklehuckle Woods to Joke's End and the broken Koopa Cruiser. Again, because the game assumes there is no way past the big wall without going through the story, after you defeat Birdo the game doesn't care how much of the story progression you've done, it will set us in an end game state where Peach is considered to be captured.

I'm commenting before watching the run, I'm predicting that the Mush Badges are gonna see some abuse. Edit: having taken time to process the absolute TRIP that was this run, I can at least say that my prediction was correct, the Mush Badge was abused to high hell. But I wish I had known that barrels held the secrets of reality distortion, because then I would have just run straight for the nearest barrel last time I wanted to go to the next reality over.

The thing about 100% is that it literally doesn't exist for RPGs such as this one. There has been multiple talks about making a 100% category, but everyone defines 100% as something else. There is no clear definition of 100% for this game. 100% usually means beating every objective and collecting everything, but that brings up a lot of questions. What does everything really mean? This is why you're not gonna see a 100% TAS of this game. However I will start making a TAS of a longer category, either Glitchless or All Bosses, I haven't decided yet.

@@larhyperhair When Luigi turns into a barrel and Mario hammers the barrel there is 1 frame where you can hop on Luigi again. By then hopping off the barrel the game thinks that Luigi is both in and not in a barreled state, which is the reason why he can move at normal speed and switch even though he is technically also a barrel. If he breaks out of this glitchy state, the game changes his action command to blank. Weird question, but what were the hardest parts to optimize excluding the fights

The teleports by FAR. Manipulating RNG in the fights and bossfights was pretty difficult too, but they all pale in comparison to the time spent optimising the teleports and the glitches. Getting out of Stardust ahead of Mugg1991's Work In Progress TAS that he made in 2017 took me 2 months to achieve, mostly because I was new to TASing and I had to delete all inputs 4 times and redo Stardust every time. Also most of the time was spent manipulating the mushroom drops you saw in Stardust (after each of the fighter fly battles, mushrooms drop at the end of each one, and if you look closely, you can see that we get a LOT of mushrooms that way). From there, the spirits minigame in Hoohoo Mountain did slow my progress down but we managed to manipulate a 2/10 (2 representing the spirits that spawned 2 spaces away from our location, meaning we had to get 2 spirits using spin jumps) which was pretty good, although Mugg's work in progress TAS only got 1 spirit to spawn 2 spaces away. He finished the minigame at 23" 98' and I finished at 22" 98'. Even though the movement afterwards was hard to come up with, it took me a surprisingly short amount of time (like a month or even less) to reach the barrel room. And then, from there.. our progress slowed down drastically. We spent about 6 months just optimising and finding out ways to set up the teleports (which start near the end of the room at 45:06). At 47:29 probably the hardest teleports to optimise begin. It's a chain consisting of 26 teleports in a row, without cancelling glitched movement at all, in order to reach Birdo way earlier than intended. After we finished those however, it only took us a few weeks to get from beanbean castle to Bowletta when we came back from Birdo. And then once again, our progress slowed down a lot. It took me approximately 41 hours of trying over and over over the course of 4 days to get the Cackletta fight that we got. All the hammer attacks, all the successful and failed jumps had a purpose behind them, in order to manipulate RNG.
