hey little tip. You can actually turn up your preamp gain pretty high and keep the fader low to get a more saturated sound if you prefer. When I had an analog console my favorite thing to do was on over heads. Bring the gain in hotter keep the faders low to balance the levels and use that compression knob you have and be a little aggressive with it. It will knock your socks off. Get that Zeppelin overhead drum sound. I think Tascam did a great thing here and the best bang for your buck if you need inputs, analog console and at a budget price plus only one cable to all that audio in. No Brainer.

Great tips! I have a question regarding the use of external effects. You gave an example of using chorus on the guitar through the left sub output (hard pan), but in this case, shouldn't the effect be used in stereo? Sorry if it's a silly question. That tip was amazing and will help me a lot. Thank you!
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. The effect coming back would be in stereo. Typically, the signal going out of the M12 and out of the Sub Out would be mono. It would then go to the outboard chorus effect. Just like it would be if your guitar was plugged directly into the effect itself. Assuming you're using a stereo chorus, it would then come back into the M12 in stereo. In my example, I think I had it come back to stereo channels 9&10.

Thx for the tips/tricks! When you connected the MPC ONE, I could detect a rather clear latency going on. How do you tackle this, either on the MPC One or the Model 12?
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. If you're referring to my Midi (MPC) example, I don't notice any latency. The second I hit "Play "on the Model 12, the MPC One starts playing instantly. If you are referring to when the keyboard/synth comes in that I mapped to tracks 1 & 2 in my demo, to my ear, I will agree that that particular instrument sounds like it coming in a few milliseconds late off the beat. But that has nothing to do with the M12. I used a "demonstration project" that came with the MPC One and it's exactly how it sounds if you listened directly on the MPC One. Otherwise, if that's not what you are referring to, I need you to be more specific where you hear the latency.
@jenssonntag908
@jenssonntag908 2 ай бұрын
@@mutzmusic5737 Yep, that's it, when the synths come in from the MPC One I hear a distinct latency. I get that it's not to do with the M12, but I am wondering how you can correct it? Thx for your answer. :)
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 2 ай бұрын
@@jenssonntag908 I have no idea how to correct it. This was a canned program/demo that came with the MPC One. My guess is who ever programmed the sequence had the synth came in a few ms late. I suppose if I really knew what I was doing with the MPC One, I could probably nudge the synth to come in a couple ms earlier, but I'm still learning how to use it.

@@jenssonntag908 There is a timing correction setting in the menu. but since the Model 12 is fully digital from the inputs down , this can sometimes be a (small ) issue, specially if not set up correct.

One thing I do here is to hook an headphone out to an oscilloscope I do have around (to the MPC before, to the TASCAM now).

I have been using an AKAI MPK mini as a midi tool to record into Logic Pro for years, but I recently bought 2 synthesizers that I want to start recording with-I got the model 12 because I'm not stopping at 2 synths, lol. I have the Model 12 set up as a DAW controller and I can record the MPK mini with it just fine, but my 2 synthesizers that I want to record with aren't making it into the DAW/computer. I know there is a signal going into the 12 from the synths-I have them plugged into tracks 1 and 2, but I'm not getting any sound other than noise on my DAW. I'm sure it's something basic, but I'm new to the analog world after recording with software/midi instruments exclusively for years.

Thanks for watching. I'm not a heavy midi user, so I'm not sure how helpful I can be. If I understand your problem, it sounds like you are using your M12 as an audio interface to bring in your 3 midi devices into your DAW. I assume you are trying to bring the analog signal from all 3 devices and only the Akai MPK is coming thru. How are the 3 devices hooked up to the M12? Are they all hooked up by USB (with a USB Hub)? If so, do the 2 synths have the capability to send the analog signals over USB or do they only send the mini signal? You may want to try "Teffy & Meems" channel. He's a synth player and has a couple of M12 how to videos such as "How to setup MPC One with Tascam Model 12 and hardware synths" that you night find helpful.

Lately I've been using Sansdisk IMageMate 140MB/s SDXC disks. Either 64 or 128GB. They're about $10 to $15 each. Don't need to format them. Just stick them in and they should work.

Do the channel and the track have to be the same when recording? For instance, if you plug into channel 1, can you record it onto track 5, for example?
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 Ай бұрын
Yes, I believe they do. But you can always move what was recorded on track 1 (channel 1) to track 5 by using the Track Swap function (MTR/Track Edit/Track Swap)

You think they are releasing the tascam 1200 this year?
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 2 ай бұрын
I really don't know, but my guess is probably not this year. They just came out with the Model 2400 and usually it takes a year or two for things to trickle down to the next model.

8:15 You say "I haven't got anything turned up yet" Indeed you haven't. In fact, you have your gain knob at MINUS 10 dB at that moment...First set that at zero..THEN start your setup/gain-staging. That is what I meant in my earlier comment.
@mutzmusic5737
@mutzmusic5737 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Technically, you are correct since I have a line level device hooked up and not a mic. Yes, I'm technically attenuating the single until I bring it from -10db to zero. I should know better since I went over this very topic in Part 1 "Features" when I explained the difference using the Gain for mic vs Line level signals. But I don't always practice what I preach. I usually always keep all my Gain knobs off (-10db Line or Zero for Mic), until I hook something up and then slowly bring up the gain. But yes, since it was a line level devices, I should have started at Zero. Good catch!
@muppetpaster
@muppetpaster 2 ай бұрын
Why don't you (standard) set all your Gain knobs to zero?? The way you have them set right now, is at minus (-) 10 dB.....(or as we call it "pad-switch on modus) So you currently have all inputs set at "attenuation on". A lot of Model 12 users tend to overlook this. Zero (0) is somewhere at 11 O' clock.
