On the morning of May 10th, Russian forces launched a ground assault against Ukraine in the northern Kharkiv region. I want to examine if this is a diversion tactic or are they planning to assault the city center? How will Ukraine respond? And What strategic reasons are driving the battle here for both sides? Im your average infantryman chris cappy Lets find out.
Behind me is a live conflict map that constantly updates the location of front line positions across the country. This icon indicates Russian troops are assaulting across roughly two dozen different towns on the border. So far Russia claims to have captured 5 villages within an area known as the contested grey zone although Ukraine contests that. This might seem like a surprise, but For the past 2 weeks we’ve actually seen reports that Russia was creating an operational significant northern grouping by moving between 35,000 and 50,000 of their troops to this region. On May 5th this report stated several units had been taken off the front lines in Zaporizhia and moved to form a new grouping near Kharkiv. The Ukrainian general staff had warned that Russia was massing troops along the northern border in recent weeks and could push for Kharkiv as an opener to a big summer offensive. Originally they anticipated the attack might even include an 2nd attempt at invading the city of Sumy as well. Much like during the first invasion attempt when we saw the Z symbol on many Russian vehicles we’re now seeing a new more complicated looking symbol associated specifically with the operational north grouping attacking near Kharkiv. Don’t ask me if it’s a celtic symbol, a letter of some unknown alphabet or a graphic design, I have no idea.
Many of these signs were first identified by a Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets who on May 5th reported that Russian forces were pretending to unload troops and equipment at railway stations in Kursk Oblast to come off the frontline for rest. They were trying to hide their troop movements because they then marched on foot to deployment points in Belgorod Oblast near the border. Russian troops moved to a staging area preparing for the assault while trying to avoid detection.
The city of Kharkiv itself is Ukraine’s second largest city, home to over 1.3 million people, and they have steadfastly resisted capture since the start of the invasion despite being located just 25 miles from the Russian border. Kharkiv has been rationing their electricity in the face of attacks on their energy infrastructure and they’ve reportedly been hit by glide bombs on a daily basis. There are some potential reasons for the strategic importance of this region to both sides. Pro-Ukranian all Russian forces launched several retaliatory cross border raids from the Kharkiv region into the Russian city of Belgorod in March 2024. That basically means Russian forces who are loyal to Ukraine launched actual ground assaults inside Russian territory near here. Then Russia claims Ukraine has been hitting Belgorod with artillery and drone strikes for months. Directly following this in March the Kremlin stated they would create what they called a quote unquote “sanitary zone” or a buffer zone inside Ukraine that was big enough to prevent these kind of strikes on Russian cities in the future. These lines of reasoning from Moscow might not be their true intentions, it could be disinformation designed to keep Russia’s true intentions hidden… but it’s important to note them. For example, Ukraine has already demonstrated its ability to hit deep inside Russian territory with domestically produced drones striking oil refineries all the way in Bashkortostan 1,300 miles from the front lines. And the United States just sent Ukraine a longer range ATACM missile with a range of 300 km. A ten kilometer buffer zone might not make a major difference as widespread tube artillery shelling of Belgorod was not occuring.
The Ukrainian military leadership now has a decision to make. How much reinforcements do they want to divert to Kharkiv. Ukraine has already devoted reserve forces to be engaged in the Donbass to stop Russia’s grinding advance after taking the city of Avdiivka in February. According to this ISW assessment This might be Russian planners' goal to force Ukraine to move manpower and materials off their lines in the Donbas to protect Kharkiv. The reason they make this assessment is because they believe 35,000 to 50,000 Russian troops would not be enough to take the city of Kharkiv which would require drives across open terrain on a scale Russia has not conducted since the start of the full scale invasion. Although if Russia chooses to reinforce this direction of attack further in the future that assessment could change.

It COULD be as simple as Russia, who vastly outnumbers Ukraine, can afford to spread out their troops more. Since they can do this, they are attempting to force Ukraine to have to spread out their forces as well. This thinning and weakening the Ukrainian defensive line across the entire front. Including spreading out the limited number of western weapons. This would make their war of attrition move along a bit faster.

And if by any means, the front collapses in the Karkhiv-area, they would probably pull in there all the reserves they may have. I maintain that the Kharkiv offensive is what is called in Chess a "gambit." I don't think the offensive has a goal yet other than to force Ukraine to make some difficult choices. Reports currently suggest that a large portion (possibly 90%) of the Russian troops in this group are held in reserve. If this is accurate, the goal is to force Ukraine to decide what sort of troop allocation to devote to resisting the attack. The goal is to then deliver a major blow somewhere to stretch the defenses past the breaking point. It remains to be seen whether this will be successful, but I htink the goal is to achieve a breakthrough somewhere (anywhere) that can be leveraged to disrupt Ukrainian defense and start to provide near total freedom of movement for the Russian army into deep Ukrainian territory.

The wildly different things being reported by sources troubles me. If you look at pro-Ukrainian sources they will claim that Ukraine inflicted heavy casualties on a hapless, but massive, Russian attack, and halted them after they "only" took hundreds of square kilometers. This is somehow supposed to be a good thing. Pro-Russian, and most neutral (from what I can find) sources say that Russia only committed a relatively small force and a vast majority of its forces near Kharkiv are untouched. Some of the attacking forces lost some men, yes, but >5000 men in exchange for about 1/20th of the second largest country in Europe seems like one of the best deals ever. The disturbing implication once you look at all the sources, is that Russia only had to commit a couple thousand men to take over a massive chunk of Ukraine, with seemingly little to no resistance. If this is how badly Ukrainian forces have degraded in one of the most important fronts of the war, then that means that potentially the ENTIRE Ukrainian front is about to collapse.

I believe their objectives are the following: - create a buffer zone so that belgorod is no longer attacked - surround kharkiv, they wont go in, but they want to have the villages around it so they can start bombing it to start what will be a Bahmut 2.0 (use artillery until everything is destroyed and later on go in with troops) so they want to have kharkiv in range. - Create a new front to force ukraine to deploy resources in a longer front, and this front hasnt been mined and its way softer than the south front, and its not as complicated as the anfibious operation that taking Kherson would take. In my opinion, based on the war pace, this is the beggining of a long battle for Kharkiv which will take easily 9-12 months and can turn into another Bahmut for Ukraine, a battle that draws too many ukrainian resources while still sending those resources there for political reasons. We have already seen Ukraine put forward the political logic before the military logic (one of the reasons why Zaluzhny is no longer in charge). My prediction is that Kharkiv will fall at mid 2025 and peace negotiations will start at the end of 2025 as they run out of manpower and morale EDIT: I think I was maybe to overconfident in my prediction, I think that its probably just a way for Russia to try to end the war sooner, its the second largest city of Ukraine, and if Russia threatens to really take it they might choose to go to the negotiation table instead and sign a treaty as Ukraine loses manpower and morale because of the siege. To take Kharkiv Russia would probably take 2 years or even more.

Usually I agree with you. However, I can’t this time. I have family in Europe and a Ukrainian wife with a brother that her family says the western media makes it sound so good about Ukraine standing fast against the “invaders”. He said it’s BS and that they were getting the crap kicked out of them by the Russians. He said ; “they are so aggressive and between air strikes, artillery and bombs we are dying. For every one of us there are 7 of them. We have no ammunition, no anti- aircraft batteries, hardly enough food and medical supplies. The situation here is critical. Even our officers are arguing with each other.” So who do we believe? Western information or what the real Ukrainian soldier reports? You make the call. Me, I’m going with my Brother-in-Law.

its not a rule, it's a generalization. there are no easy frames of reference for conflicts on these scales but generally skeaping larger cities usually take more forces to assault and secure. as mentioned more buildings means more places to hide and defend from. it takes longer to use artillery and air strikes to destroy defending forces in larger cities. it's just estimations, they can always be wrong.

@coenkloppert
@coenkloppert 25 күн бұрын
@@gandydancer9710 No its not. The population roughly determines the size of the city first of all. Kharkiv is almost ten times bigger then Bachmut and it took Russians 100k men and 2 months to take that city with heavy casualties. Also, Russia will have to manage the population of the city. The population will need water, electricity and food which if Russia tries to occupy the city, it will have to supply. The population will also have to be monitored by garrison troops or else Russian troops will face constant partisan attacks which will be impossible to stop since it is such a big city. In general urban combat is much more intensive and slow than any other form of combat,to take a city with a metropolitan area of 3200km2 is almost impossible with 50k men.

As an example if there was a harder angle of attack according to the geography, your triganometrtry intel gains massive advantages if your enemy fires. It's not a feint, it's a tacit to create a dillema.

it remains to be seen whether this is a full offensive or not. at the very least this causes ukraine to divert resources away from the dnipro front.. not like that has been going well, anyway.

i could be wrong but i dont think Russia has enough manpower to take Kharkiv which is Ukraine’s 2nd largest city. this could be a distraction for them to take Chasiv Yar which the Russians have been struggling to take.

@@doodsrem you MAY be right about the distraction but trust me: Russia HAS the manpower to take Kharkiv.

@@cloke3076 The question is if that manpower is willing. Patriotism in Ukraine seems to be going strong, after all, fighting a defensive war tends to do that. Meanwhile in Moscow you just hear on and on of the protests, and sometimes riots. So what comes first Kharkiv to the Russians, or Moscow to the riots
