However, that’s a rare enough exception that I think they’re close enough to synonyms, closer than many accepted answers. All burnt toast is burnt bread even if occasional burnt non-toast is also burnt bread.

Bread gets baked before it gets sliced into slices that get eaten. Things can get burnt while baking in an oven.

@@beth12svist I would call that burnt dough not burnt bread. Once you use the moniker "bread" you are talking about after the step in the oven is done. Besides a toaster *is* an oven. Just a very small one with the heating element placed really close to the bread. Essentially toast is bread being baked a little further. The only difference is that because the bread is sliced you are exposing the inside part that normally would be deep inside the if it was still a whole loaf. You're basically turning the whole flat surface of the slice into crust by baking it.
