Hairstyling e make-up per il sospirato appuntamento con i diavoli della Tasmania. Li abbiamo sentiti gridare ed intravisti come ombre nelle foreste, ma quando, finalmente, li incontriamo in un centro per il loro ripopolamento, la loro sinistra fama sembra ingiustificata. Tozzi e bruttini, fanno solo la tenerezza che suscitano gli animali a rischio d'estinzione. E al Bonorong sono coccolati come cagnolini. Nel parco vengono curati ed ospitati anche molti echidna raccolti dalle strade. Nel nostro viaggio in bicicletta ne abbiamo visti moltissimi purtroppo investiti dalle auto. In un grande ambiente protetto ritroviamo tutti gli animali esotici che ci hanno accompagnato: i pappagalli dalle piume con le punte rosa appollaiati sulle acacie che osservavano incuriositi il nostro passaggio ed, ovviamente, i canguri! I marsupiali assistono svogliatamente alle continue profferte di cibo dei visitatori entusiasti accettando di tanto in tanto i loro grattini sotto il muso. All'uscita dal parco, senza accorgermene, mi porto dietro un ospite evaso. Sulla mia giacca c'è un ragno gigantesco e lo stress, ancora una volta, ci dà l'adrenalina necessaria per raggiungere rapidamente Hobart.
ll diavolo della Tasmania o diavolo orsino è un mammifero marsupiale minacciato per via di una forma di cancro facciale trasmissibile con il morso. Il governo regionale tasmaniano ha attivato dei programmi per contrastare la diffusione del fenomeno e salvaguardare la specie.
Il suo nome deriva dai versi che questo animale è solito emettere nella notte. Questo animale ha il morso più potente di tutti i mammiferi viventi in rapporto alle dimensioni corporee e gli permette di nutrirsi di carogne, triturando senza difficoltà anche ossa e denti.
Attualmente questo animale è diffuso soltanto nell'isola di Tasmania ma in passato era presente anche nel resto dell'Australia, dove questa specie si estinse però ben quattro secoli prima dell'arrivo dei colonizzatori europei perché ritenuto a torto razziatore di pollai e cacciatore di capi di bestiame (di cui erano responsabili principalmente cani e gatti rinselvatichiti. Infatti il diavolo della Tasmania raramente attacca esemplari che non siano vecchi o malati)
L’echidna è un insettivoro con il corpo ricoperto di peli e aculei sul dorso, chiamato in inglese anche spiny anteater, cioè formichiere spinoso, simile ad un riccio. Ha una testa piccola e un lungo muso, stretto e appuntito, zampe corte e dotate di forti artigli, che lo rendono un abile scavatore.

We have heard them scream and we caught sight of them running like shadows in the forests, but when, finally, we see them in a restocking centre, their sinister reputation seems unjustified. Stumpy and a bit ugly, they only raise the tenderness that animals at risk of extinction do. And at Bonorong they are pampered like small dogs. Many injured echidnas from the streets are also cared for and hosted in the park. During our bike trip we saw many of them, unfortunately hit by cars. In a large protected area we meet all the exotic animals that have followed us during our trip: the curious parrots with pink-tipped feathers perched on the acacias that watched us passing by and, of course, the kangaroos! The marsupials listlessly watch the continuous offers of food by enthusiastic visitors and occasionally accept to be scratched under their snouts. Upon leaving the park I accidentally take with me a fugitive. There is a giant spider on my jacket and once again, this stress gives us enough adrenaline to reach Hobart quickly. After some inconvenience we arrive at the capital and complete our bike trip in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian devil is a marsupial mammal in danger of extinction due to a form of facial cancer that can be transmitted by biting. The Tasmanian government has activated some programs to combat the spread of this illness and protect the species.
It has the strongest bite of all living mammals in relation to its body size and eats carrions easily by shredding even bones and teeth.
It is widespread only on Tasmania but in the past it was also present in the rest of Australia where, however, it was extinct four centuries before the arrival of the European colonizers who wrongly believed it had been a raider of chicken coops and a hunter of livestock (although feral dogs and cats were mainly responsible for that), but the Tasmanian devil rarely attacks young and healthy animals.
The echidna is an insectivore similar to a hedgehog. it feeds on ants, worms and insect larvae. The female echidna produces a small single egg which remains in the pouch and hatches after 10 days. The puggle remains in the pouch for another 45-55 days to be breastfed.
