Tasmania's 'toxic' salmon SLAMMED in new book by Richard Flanagan | 7NEWS

Salmon from Tasmania is sold in supermarkets across the country.. and enjoyed regularly in many households. For decades we've been told it's healthy, clean and grown in environmentally pristine conditions. But a new book by Richard Flanagan describes the industry as "an elaborate and highly successful con job".
It claims the salmon industry is poisoning Hobart's drinking water and degrading waterways.. and describes packed fish being grown in filth.
The Tasmanian Salmonid Growers Association says "the impact of this book will be deeply felt by the more than 2,000 people and their families, as well as thousands of contractors that are part of our industry." And it's urging "people to be informed by facts, widely available from governments and leading researchers, and from each company's public reports."

To day fish is vaccinated. However Mr Flanagan concern (I have not read the book yet) I presume is the contamination the open merd create and Dear Tasmanian this is no joke if you concern about you job you need to get the same vaccine as the fish to survive. Some part of Northen Norway prohibited new licences using open merd.

Please heed Richard's message. Spread this information to anyone prepared to listen. Make it known what we expect by refusing to purchase farmed Tasmanian salmon. Demand change with your purchasing power. I'm an Aussie who recently returned from working in management at a wild caught Alaskan salmon fish processing plant. The difference between wild caught and farm raised cannot be underestimated. It's extremely challenging to find wild caught salmon now I'm back in QLD but knowing what I do, there's absolutely no question in my mind that I will not ever purchase farmed salmon (and I absolutely love salmon but will do without if not wild caught). I refuse to buy farmed salmon. I refuse to support an industry so comfortable with misleading our people. Jobs will still be available, but farming in this way is happening because we're allowing such sub standard practices without regard for all the environmental and health damage they're getting away with because it's cheaper to do things this way. Take the time to watch the information about salmon farming in Norway also. Everyone is being mislead into believing they're doing something positive for their health by eating healthy fish, supposedly high in Omega 3’s, the healthy fat we are critically needing as part of a balanced diet. Yet, the reality is the farmed salmon you're consuming may be doing more harm than good both for your personal health and also for the health of your community due to the massive environmental damage being caused. In reality, I believe MORE jobs would be available to hard working Aussie's in the salmon industry if we set appropriate standards we all expect and appropriately regulate business practices . This is something I wouldn't ordinarily expect to see as acceptable business practice in Australia. It's disappointing and shameful to say the least.

He's right. It's also what they feed the fish too, usually grains. What they eat, you eat. Need sustainable wild caught fishing. Now with omegas, we do need both but more in a 1:1 ratio. Right now we have basically a 20:1 ratio of omega 6 vs 3 in a typical diet. That is bad. Eat more sardines. If you buy them tinned, make sure it's wild caught sustainable northern seas and it's packed in EV olive oil only. No blends or other junk.

We have the same problem in Canada. Government and the fish farm industry are suppressing and covering up the scientific evidence of the damage they are causing to the wild salmon stocks just to preserve the profits of these Norwegian aquaculture companies.The only solution is to put these salmon farms onto land where the sea water can be properly filter before being returned to the ocean. I am surprised there was no mention of sea lice in Tasmania as it becomes a huge problem everywhere in the world where salmon are farmed.There is another book on the subject just released by independent biologist Alexandra Morton called “Not On My Watch” ,definitely worth a read. She has been studying the effects of salmon farms for over 20 years and is more knowledgable then most on the subject. She has an interesting story on how she started studying salmon farms. Originally she was a whale biologist studying Orcas, but when the whales suddenly stopped feeding in their traditional territory she looked for the cause and it turned up that the recent arrival of salmon farms was the reason. From there it was all downhill until just recently the British Columbian government has committed to shutting down the fish farms that are on the most critical wild salmon migration routes. It is a start but we must keep up the pressure until all open net pens farms are shut down. Citizens of all countries who love their costal waters need to pressure their governments to have all Salmon farms moved onto land based tanks.The sooner this industry if forced to move onto land the healthier our oceans will be. I personally love eating salmon but would never even consider eating toxic farmed salmon.

Before I continue any further, I must Clearly point out that, Salmon Farming has No relation whatsoever to our State or Federal Fish Hatcheries!! Infact our knowledge has been implemented in by Canadians in British Columbia, with building and operating of Successful Salmon and Steelhead Hatcheries. Aside from disasterous pollution and Toxicity of the Salmon that your guest pointed out, we also know that, Salmon Farming is not even logically or economically sound!! It takes 5 pounds of Anchovies for each pound of horribly Toxic Salmon raised!! The whole idea is absurd, and fooling the workers with this extremely Unsound method, is in no way a benefit to Australian workers or anyone else in the world. China pays NGO’s, protesters and environmental activist to create these sort of issues which will help to china and disturb local government. Best example, maximum mines related businesses own by chinese but you never saw any protest. But when mine started non Chinese adani mines in Queensland. You guys saw so many protest and media coverage. China takes advantage of our democratic values.

I get sick of people who say they were 'silent for a long time'. What is their excuse for being silent??? They silent the crime and they all must go to jail. Along with those who directly involved in the business. It is easy to say - go to your nearest fishing fleet etc. Very good advise. But this won't stop the crime. Where is their advise on how to stop, or fight this? If you people think it is ok to stay quiet than please stick your advises to your arse. They won't help humanity.

Yes the waters around Tasmania are far too warm. Here in New Zealand we are growing Salmon in Glacial fed farms straight off the Southern Alps and the Tasman Glacier and the water flow rate is perfect for salmon farming and our Salmon are a natural Pacific Salmon, called the Chinook Salmon! You can fish the alpine fed rivers of the South Island and catch free run wild salmon; I have caught many wild Sockeye salmon in the Waitaki and McKenzie Country as well as Chinook Salmon! The biggest Chinook salmon I have caught was a 28lber and the smallest was a 2.5 lber Sockeye which was landlocked in Lake Benmore!

That Ocean Blue Smoked Salmon is a far superior product than Tassie Salmon. What this guy says makes sense funny enough, no wonder Tassie Salmon is so fatty and tastes average. That Ocean Blue salmon is from Norway or somewhere similar from memory and has the perfect taste, least amount of sodium and perfect real natural smoke flavour 👍
@pamelahardy2907

You need to KZbin that, because I started buying Tassie Salmon as a healthy alternative after watching a KZbin doco. Doctors have been recommending to limit your intake of salmon for some time now, however as unfortunate as it is, most people still remain unaware. I'm so sad that Australia is no better, especially with all the perfect waste we have and natural bacteria's that could prevent this if only the industry would take measures to revolutionise itself. Stupid money money money. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid things get while prioritising money above all

@@pamelahardy2907 fair enough to what you say 👍 but I never said anything about it being a healthier product. I still feel its a more superior product though. I go by taste and I'm a fussy eater. The way 'Ocean Blue' do their smoked salmon is spot on. I don't any eat salmon cause its meant to be "healthy", I eat it cause it taste delicious 😁

@@YesNoMaybeIDntKnwDoU fair enough too. I mean I also love salmon. Personally if you don't mind me adding, I would prefer that a food historically known as healthy is sold with warnings if the health components have been bred or fed out of them. Why can't they just make it to our expectations which is in line with being tasty and healthy? I'm so over it lol, I'm beginning to figure out why older people get grumpy. Very interesting indeed. Consumers have been scammed by the salmon industry. I was shocked to watch the Four Corner Doc on Tassal and how the company bribe the Tasmanians to support them. Worst still paid for WWF logo to market Tassal as sustainability company. Indeed very sad when Tassie is a beautiful place but becoming an island of greed.
