Its TASMIN ARCHER ,pronounced TAZ-MIN ARCHER Not sure if you got the whole meaning of this Gem., but its a very very deep song that has incredible lyrics and melody . "Sleeping Satellite" is the debut single by British -songwriter , released as the first single from the album, Great Expectations in September 1992. The song was a number-one hit in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

One of my favourite songs from the 90s. I always read it as her reflecting on the loss of potential of the Apollo moon missions. We dreamed so high and so far. To quote Andrew Chaikin, 'We touched the face of another world and became a people without limits.' And then we let those dreams go and returned to Earth. And we've been earthbound ever since.

Always really liked this song but just assumed it meant nuttin'! I mean, I thought "good luck working out what this means!" Like many much loved songs that came before in the1980's. Love it that Tasmin's hit single means something, better still inspired by the Apollo moonshot, who'd a thunk it?

The video you are watching is the UK version. There was a version for the USA that had a simpler theme. The "sleeping satellite" referred to in the song is the moon. This song stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it - and few songs have done that to me. The quality of lyrics, composition, production and Tasmin's singing was incredible for its time - but it was three years in the making!!! I interviewed Tasmin. She was someone that I always wanted to have a conversation with because of this song. She is from the city of Bradford in the county of Yorkshire in England.

The lyrics of the song reference the Apollo Missions of the 1960s, characterised as "man's greatest adventure"; the sleeping satellite of the title being the Moon.

I'm late to this reaction but I think I read one day that it's about space exploration and that when we learn too much about something it can take away the wonder and the mystery and the fascination. It's no Alien or Trecky song! A "sleeping satellite" is a wonderful picture, real poetry. I like the way Tasmin Archer puts the pain in her voice which becomes rough on certain places. She performes it well, it's melancolic, she is tired from the endless efforts of mankind to conquer everything, but we distroy actually everything. Sometimes the human species needsa critical self-reflection, but don't get caught from melancholy, it drags you into deep water and drowns you. Think positive!

I had the same reaction in 1993 when I first heard this. The pipe organ, her clothes, that little girl, the guy in glasses on the guitar and the Middle Ages ode to alchemy. So unique. A black woman from central England (Bradford Yorkshire UK) as unique as a white boy from Harlem, Robert Melville Hall (Moby). You know whatever they produce is going to be special.

Something that I always took from this song, and a lot of people disagree, is that in our constant rush forward since the Enlightenment we've left behind a lot of folklore and such things. Certainly in the UK, so much culture has been relegated to history in the pursuit of modernity. Part of this comes with the collapse of competing possibilities which follows scientific progress, and the moon landing is held up here as emblematic of this. Was the moon a dead rock, or another world, or an illusion, or the home of dragons, or actually made of cheese? Once we went there, we knew, and there was a little less space in the world for folklore. And yes the other themes as well, but also this.

"I'm definitely getting a space/galaxy vibe, I don't know... witchcraft maybe" Please consider the lyric: Did we fly to the Moon too soon? Did we squander the chance In the rush for the race The reason we chase is lost in romance And still we try To justify the waste Of man's greatest adventure I've never known anything or anyone to so perfectly sum up the space race between the USA and USSR. This song and performance is simply brilliant.
