Thank you very much Tasos ! invaluable info, awesome of you to share your vast knowledge of these wonderful, yet painful engines ) As far as the noise, Id say the lifters is more like ticking noise and the adjusters are more like clanking to put into words ))

Thank you very much for these videos on the M156. I've never been in one before and your kind willingness to share your knowledge has helped me immensely in reassembly on a head that broke a valve spring. Also, I wanted to share my experience with torquing the five T30 screws on the adjuster. I attempted to torque them to 25 nm and found that it stretched them slightly and that they would never reach that value. I tried your method with the marker on my other adjuster (that hadn't been disassembled) and found that the screws were torqued to 15 nm. I'm not trying to contradict your expertise, I only hope this helps and saves someone else from making my mistake. Also, for what it's worth, I was using a metric torque wrench, not converting from ft-lbs. Thanks again for the great videos.

Standart torqu for M6 10.9 bolts is 15 NM. So thats the rigth torque.

Great video! Very informative! I have faced similar issues with camshaft adjusters on the 271 engines, and had to replace them. This video explained their workings and failures perfectly. Thanks! Charles from Kenya.

Thank you for your videos. Very informative, very detailed and it makes everyone be able to follow you. I personally think that either the Mercedes manufacturer or AMG would most certainly benefit if they were to hire you to be their lead person to run the training classes for their staff. You are a cool guy who is willing to share knowledge. Awesome work!

Thanks for posting this video and explaining everything in detail. I wish there was an option to buy an OEM adjuster plate. It doesn't seem to make sense to have to get an entire new camshaft adjuster due to the pin or plate wearing out.

Also not to forget about installing the oil stopping short pigtails connectors onto the outlet of camshaft adjustors. Avoid oil from migrating into ECU beside the engine. Annually check for oil in the common main connector for the ECU. Regards.

Tasos, thank you for all of your informative videos. I did have one question. I have a 2009 E63 with 101000km. I am in South Florida, Miami and the car currently makes a ticking noise. The interesting part is this ticking noise typically never happens when I turn on the car and its cold. It mostly happens when the car is warm and I turn it on. It almost sounds like a lifter, but also wonder if it is a cam adjuster. If it is a cam adjuster, and it is worn like in your video - what could happen with a failed cam adjuster? Could it be catastrophic? Have you seen an adjuster fail and damage an entire engine?

Hi Tasos, Your videos are excellent and very detailed. I have learned a lot from watching them! I have a 2008 C63 AMG with the right intake camshaft adjuster rattling noise on start up when warm most of the time. It has 75,000 miles. Do you think the pin flip you mentioned in your video will be suitable to try or do you recommend just getting new camshaft adjuster at this mileage? Thanks

Hi Tasos, I might have a cam adjuster or chain tensioner problem when starting the car the noise is bad but the second start is smooth. So could I be right in saying that I am loosing oil pressure to to the adjusters and could your last explanation on the video be the reason? And Tasos the gears on the cam adjustors ,do they have to be 100% aligned or can they be a bit of as I saw on the intake cam adjuster on my ml 63 2009 model when putting oil. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. South Africa.

Hey Tasos thanks for making all the good information videos! I got a quick question hopefully you can respond to it.. ok here it goes ...when doing the intake cam adjuster can I just make a mark on the old cam adjuster and line up the new cam adjuster the same way? Also do I need the alignment tool to just change out the cam adjuster? If I do need the cam adjuster tool how would I take out the front pice that's on the cam adjuster? Thank you and hopefully you can get back to me...

I have a 2006 C280 with a M272 engine that has this problem on the left side (driver) cylinder head. The previous owner neglected the car by NOT changing the oil frequently. These multi cam/ flex cam engines need clean oil and correct quantity of oil or they fail in many ways.

Wondering if it's worth locking the camshaft adjustor on high horsepower cars instead of creating it to be efficient. Or creating another way of that pin movement without cause so much wear.

This is a very informative video, thanks. What is happening when these engines make the "rattle" on start up for a second or so, what condition is unfolding, and what happens if it goes unattended? I am surprised to see these handmade AMG engines fail in this way - do you have a theory as to what causes these to fail early?

Hi Tasos. How often have you seen camshafts being a little of when checking basic position with the timing tools on the 156? I'm getting ready to swap out my lifters and camshafts out for new ones. Pulley will pass the 40 mark a bit on pulley before timing tools fit so I can remove excisting cams. Thank you VERY much for your VERY instructive videos!!

Hi Tasos! Thanks for these videos again. Following your videos and WIS I was able to take the M156 apart and put it back successfully ( first engine I ever worked on). Now I have a question, will the worn out plate cause a “ continuous camshafts adjuster” error when I scan it with DAS? I tried swapping the sensors from intake to exhaust, re-learned the position of the camshafts as per WIS instructions and the code is still there there. So if the barrel/pin is not locked it at idle, will it cause “ continuous camshafts adjusting “? Thanks again! Keep it these way!

Tasos, I have the same question listed above. I had my head bolts replaced and all went well except since i got the car back Ive had a P0016 engine code; related to bank 1 sensor A Camshaft/Crankshaft correlation. I used to only get the adjuster rattle on random starts, now i get it EVERY startup. Is a bad adjuster a possible cause for this code? Anyone may answer I really need help diagnosing this. Its been 2 full weeks now..

Hi Tasos, I want to give you quick update. I have taken out the adjuster, but because of early VIN and Engine number of my ML63 the pin of the cam adjusters had one thick end. But the pin wasn't the issue. The spring was broken. I replaced it and voila. The ugly noise is gone. Again, a real big thank you!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone read this and know it's wrong, can please tell me ? : - intake camshaft adjusters : they lock when you start the engine (or maybe they lock when idle just before stopping the engine), but what would happen if you accelerate then cut the ignition without idle moment ? - exhaust camshaft adjusters : they lock when you stop the engine (because crankshaft stop turning, and exhaust camshafts are still turning so they go to their lock position) Because I need to know if the timing tool has to be used with locked camshaft adjusters (intake + exhaust, or just one of them ?)
