I agree 100 per cent James. It's a bit like this. Hendrix, Clapton, Page etc...oh and have you heard of this guy called Rory Gallagher? He was a master musician, constantly evolving his sound and technique. He was never a singles man. He toured and played himself to death, just like the real blues musicians. He had no time for 'the industry', yet he influenced everyone from Eddie van Halen, to Johnny Marr, to Slash and in particular Brian May. This performance alone puts him among the greats and how old was he here..22 years old!!!

There’s a couple dozen mainstream guitar players and then there is Rory who could bring it on as good, if not better, than any of them. Rory was a pure craftsman who didn’t give a crap about media hype or promoting himself in typical rock star fashion, rather, he just let his guitar do his talking. Sure, maybe he’s not as well known as other guitar “Gods”, but true lovers of blues rock know perfectly well who he is and that’s all that matters.

Let's not forget that to play with Rory and be as tight as these guys were takes incredible musicianship. Rory was lucky to be well served by his rhythm sections. He also did gigs at Queen's University Students Union and he had a lot of fans there too. Yes, he was right up there with the best of them yet a very humble and modest man. I ran into him in a music shop in Charing Cross Road, London shortly before he died and had a quick chat about the old days in Belfast. He took time to talk with me and I shook his hand.

Lost count of how often I spent the night sleeping on a bench in Victoria Station, you could in those days, having been to see Rory in London and the show had overrun by an hour or two. The guy is an absolute legend. This is my Rory story, I was the social sec at my local college and had booked Rory Gallagher along with two support bands. One band and Rory turned up, set up their gear, ran a sound check but no sign of the main support, so in a bit of a flap I asked if Rory could do a longer set. Shouldn’t have bothered, a set over three hours, and whilst the support was on he was having a drink in the bar explaining to all and sundry his little tricks. Many musicians are labelled “legend” but they pale into insignificance alongside Rory. A true gentleman and a real legend so sadly missed.

Raw, pure heart & soul........... He fleetingly, with little effort, rose far above the hype, the theatrics, the politics, the pop culture, and the industry jackals..... to be one of the few, genuinely magnificent white bluesmen of the era. Kind, quiet, humble, but ruthlessly competent in delivering a scorching fireball of intense blues through your skull; every single night. He was a cherished part of our lives that transcended all the bullshit and ballyhoo that many tried to force down our throats. He was a giant of our youth that continues to carry on into our old age. God Bless you Rory; you gave us so much. We Love You

+ whiskey river - very finde words, i hear you... :-) i like that you don´t speak of rejecting ALL music after him and disqualify it as minor or no quality, like so many others do... i´m 60 and since about three years on a revisiting trip, which i started to show my daughter (15) some of the musical heroes of my youth - my absolute faves were the who with crazy keith moon on drums, and rory was the hero of our first band - we had a brilliant guitarist who played a cover of "laundromat", and who also introduced the delta blues men to us (for instance)... what shocked me when i read the comments to my old music, was the extreme scournful chauvinism of the people of my age and older towards modern pop music, embarrassing and disgusting! i´m fairly fed up with that, and i feel ashamed of my generation... :-( i´m a musician myself and i have developed a lot in all those years, i´m very open minded and have an extremely wide spread taste in music, old and new, raw or smooth, sophisticated, punky, wild, or simply pathetic, folky, ambientish, digitalized to the limit or whatever - i´m always curious, so i´ve also been investigating new stuff galore - there are still many, many musicians who keep working on "transcendenting the bullshit" (oh lord, i know, i´m one), but they don´t necessarily play the blues - especially the really young ones with their humble little home recorded lofi hiphop (mainly short melancholic instrumental pieces) are very decent in their comments - they exchange experiences, talk about their problems of growing up, their anxieties, very peaceful and tolerant... while the members of "the love generation" act like grumpy, stubborn, intolerant dullheads, tied with cobwebbs from their long white beards to their comfy chairs (haha, i actually saw some of them like that before my inner eye), see what i mean? of course i´m generalizing, but this is the feeling, the bitter taste that is left from my excursion.... :-( three very different gems i found lately, i hope you like them either? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZmqhKSnnc2ioac kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWbdk2ONibh_qbs kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXiblXargs6Vmqs so once more, thank you for just praising rory gallagher and giving him the respect he absolutely deserves, without scourning to the other side - much appreciated... :-) love and greetings from germany btw. i think i still have a cassette with a recording of our first live appearance in 1973 or 74, which i remember well, because my drum solo was mentioned in the local newspaper, haha - to be honest: it was a copy of parts of the drum solo on the grand funk railroad live double LP (which i later gave away for the who "live at leeds" album and never regretted that!)

@@friesiamans1966 We have alot in common. Many musicians and seniors are not open minded at all but prefer to argue and insult each other about supposed conversations from 50 years ago that are likely no more than urban legend. Or the model of Rory's treble booster. A generalization that does irk me is alot of musicians and fans of Rory, Gary Moore, Clapton, SRV etc have never listened to Hoodoo Man Blues or Live At The Regal. Where do they think this stuff came from? Ireland or Wales? I don't get it.....Even Clapton said that when he was younger, if you didn't know who Robert Johnson was ....He wouldn't talk to you. BTW.... that was a good trade for Live At Leeds.

@@jeffdelaney8934 hey, i´m very delighted about your reply, thank you so much - i tend to write wordy i know, but i don´t get much response - just the other day a neighbour was here, about 70 years old, and he kept talking about dave clark five and the searchers like it was all happening today, hah? it´s crazy, so many people seem to live on their attic in a museum of dusty relics of yesteryear - and when someone comes in and tells them about the sunshine and the fresh green grass outside, and the birds that are singing, they say: you don´t know what REAL life is, that´s here on the attic........ oh boy, i´m glad i´m still young enough in my mind to understand and like at least some of the modern music... btw. it WAS a good trade, haha... :-) cheers my friend

John Wilson - what an incredible drummer! The break-up of Taste was a calamity formented by a deceitful record company. John Wilson realised this later in life. It’s both futile and yet tempting to speculate on the heights Taste could have attained.

I saw him play b4 he passed, in St.Louis. He just watched each person as they entered the show sitting there patiently for everyone to find a seat. starring at each one. .No one ever came come close to Rory's music guitar and music. He opened the show with Thin LIzzy's. " the boys are back in town." Best show I've ever seen, the only one I didn't pass out watching. lol

I have and always will be a devoted fan to Rory, never saw him perform live but it's how it is. One thing I'll say is I really don't believe there is a "best" or "greater than so and so' because it will always be a matter of personal preference for one thing. Back then they really were great and will live on forever. We had em' all, Rory, Jimi, Alvin, Stevie, Eric, Johnny, Steve, Duane, Carlos, Jimmy, Angus, the list goes on forever and that's not even getting to the one's who did Country, there were some awesome guitar players there too and you'd be lying to yourself if you said different. Rory is at he top of my list but there are many more and I couldn't possibly make a decision on who is better than all of them. I think we were blessed to have been there to appreciate these legendary guitar player and we should just be thankful for what they did while they were or are this earth, even if only for a short while, as is often the case, we all know too well and just leave it at that. You could argue the subject until the end of time and never have a winner. One of my favorite tunes from Rory is "Brute Force and Ignorance" and if you want to see it for yourself, just read about a handful of the comments below. Now that is Brute Force and Ignorance right there with a couple dozen or more I read, save the arguing for your old lady or whoever you're happiest arguing and let the music sooth your very soul, to borrow a phrase from Elvin Bishop, They were all great, and I'm thankful for being lucky enough to have lived it!

Rorys use of chromatics, unique bends and blending of styles gave him a totally unique sound. It's hard to pinpoint his influences although he must have spent years in the wood shed learning his lead guitar craft. Like hendrix, the careful listener can isolate outside imitation, but the individual man dominates the expression and feel creating a very personal interpretation.
