I would love to see a version of these videos where the pairings are effectively random, rather than user-submitted. Bins for each type of taste (savory, salty, etc) with examples of that type on slips of paper in the bins. Pick two at random!

The ice cream reminded me of a crazy flavor pairing. In college, some of my guy friends were messing around with flavors and what they had on hand because what else do you do as a poor college student. They discovered that saltines topped with a bit of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with siracha sauce tasted really good. I would randomly catch them eating it after that. I wasn't brave enough for it but they loved it.

That would be a great idea! For people who miss some flavours but they either don't have the right ingredients (or money to buy the pricey stuff) to create a specific dish or can't eat something due to allergies or other dietary restrictions. Recreating something with other whole foods would help avoid very processed imitations. For example, I feel like smoked salmon and mozzarella together taste like a hot dog sausage.

It's a Nordic thing. Lingonberries are high in benzene which is a natural preservative, because of the long dark winters there aren't many fresh things or sources of vitamin C. So lingonberries were used to help preserve many foods and crushed lingonberries were added to many meals (people didn't know about vitamins back then, but they knew some foods helped to keep people from getting sick). I've never had lingonberries in Ikea, can't believe the jam is of good quality. The real version of lingonberry jam isn't that sweet, it's sour, only little sugar is added and it's quite loose. In Finnish it's called puolukkasurvos, puolukka=lingonberry and survos=rough mash. It's often eaten with meat, like with our version of blood pudding or with reindeer stew.

You’re right! The jerky with the raspberry jam wins best of show. A long time ago, when I was very young, my grandfather introduce the jerky/jam combo to me. He grew up in Maine USA. When they would catch a deer, the meat they did not use immediately was preserved, some of it by making jerky. I loved it! I was five years old at the time, but I’ve been eating jerky and jam ever since. I’ve served it to guests in my home, and they look at me with that “you’ve got to be kidding” look on their faces. I’m sure they’re thinking, without saying, “Eddie has really gone off the edge this time!” But they all end up loving it.

Try mixing white miso with softened butter. You can keep a batch in the fridge if you don't just devour it all at once. Try on hot toast, toss with sauteed vegetables, on fish or in noodles. Savoury and buttery goodness. Perhaps not that weird a combo but not everyone might think of it, and the butter tempers the salty fermentation of the miso. Another thing I love is to have avocado sliced on a plate with a little good quality soy sauce and black pepper. Perhaps a squeeze of lemon or lime. So good. In terms of jerky, try Korean galbi jerky if you can find it. It already has a sweet savoury marinade (you will know what I mean if you have had Korean galbi short ribs) so you don't need the jam - it is totally moreish, and is a little softer than the tough jerky styles. Not reminiscent of a UK roast dinner, but really good too. So-called weird flavour combos are funny because every culture has a totally normal combo that makes other people raise eyebrows before trying it. Ripe mango with chili and condensed milk? Yes please. Sausages with curry ketchup? Can be really good (and also bad). Deep fried battered fish with mushy peas and chips....depends - the highs and lows there are totally dramatic.
