Just called the Blue gum tree here in Tassy (Tasmania). They grow straight and tall in their native areas and can be 100 feet to the first limb in a good size old growth tree.

Those rainbow eucalyptus trees are beautiful! The bark looks so smooth and slick. When a limb hits the ground it makes a distinct “thunk” sound, quite unlike our hardwoods.

The gum tree gets its name from the wads of sap that collect at a injury sight. Used by traditional Australian peoples, ie. Aborigines as a adhesive for making tools etc. There are hundreds of different gum tree (eauculiptus) varieties. That tree would make some great firewood once dried for a couple of years! Scored a piece of eucalyptus butt wood from my Jr. High School shop teacher in the mid sixties, had been sitting for years untouched at the school. Worked on him for a long time and he finally gave in. Took it to the bandsaw to break it down, and promptly the blade started smoking. He sez it had been on for a while and got a new one and changed it out. About three inches into the cut it starts smoking. No one knew that you needed carbide to cut dryer Aussie wood! That is the hardest wood that I’ve seen in my 70 years. Beautiful when finished.

We only have Black Gum and Sweet Gum trees in my state so seeing a Rainbow tree was a rare treat- the crew was casual but worked hard - i like the fact that even tho Jacob was done cutting he pitched in and helped the clean up- ive seen other tree cutters just stand around and watched everyone else working and that ain't Kool

I grew up in India and they have eucalyptus trees there. As a little girl my goal in life was to climb every climbable tree I saw. The eucalyptus were a challenge but I was able to shinny up the narrower ones. They are indeed very slippery, coming down was fun LOL!

Got to love the eucalyptus. Some people really hate them and they have their issues. I bought a house with a half acre and 23 trees, 15 are eucalyptus. There are 5 or 6 species on the property, four are the Blue Gum. When I moved in I knew I had to have at least three trimmed as they hung way over the neighbor's yards. This is when I learned about pollarding and most of my trees had been pollarded and not properly maintained. I really think that's why the previous owner sold the place. The trimming wasn't cheap. Flash forward two years and those three trees have sprouted new branches from the stumps and have grown at least 12 feet and three inches in diameter. This is when I started watching your channel, among others, figuring I needed to learn some maintenance techniques rather than cutting down my trees. I am not cutting down my trees! No I'm not going to be a climbing arborist at 68 but my trees are not so tall that they can't be maintained with good technique and a man lift. I do have a very tall Poplar that I'm going to have to have the professionals come back and take care of though. I'd really like to grow a rainbow on my place.

I’m Australian we have the most Eucalypt species in the world, we climb smooth Eucalypts every day, it’s definitely a challenge 😅

Cool tree and thanks for sharing! I have never seen one, even in a video. Eucalyptus on the other hand, I have worked on a few smooth bark species (cameldelensis ?) that are super slick and slippery. Great for DRT.

Time for them to get a bucket lift with large low pressure turf tires safe for the sod. Some of those branches look pretty iffy.

i don't live on the eastside, but eucalyptus trees most certainly do grow where you live, Western Washington. they may not be many rainbow versions here, but eucalyptus trees grow quite well here. I pruned a large one in Ballard this past March. keep up the great content!

Half of a 2 piece fishing rod with a 1oz sinker works pretty good for me for throwing over limbs. Then tie the tag line to it. I fish a lot so that might have something to do with it.

Eucalypts are known to have dead limbs drop, and in periods of dry weather big live limbs can go too. In that rope course annual maintenance and assessment is good practice.

Using a captain hook with your foot and knee ascenders helps getting the the end of the Limb. You may know it, but hopefully so one may learn a new trick...

That's a dangerous tree man. A lot of gums get referred to as widow makers. And that's just from people walking under them during dry summers in Australia. There's also no better firewood on earth.

I just purchased a RR Pro and on my first climb it started creeping like yours was and it freaked me out! It didnt do that at the bottom when I bounce tested it and it acted fine mid line but once I ascented to the top of my rope and was within 3 ft of my canopy anchor it wouldn't hold. I'm not sure if I really want to give it another try. Maybe it's just needs more adjusting idk.

In South Africa we call Eucalyptus, "Blue Gums." In afrikaans, "Bloekom" pronounced "Blu comm"

i think here in the Philippines it's what we called "Malabayabas"...if it is, it's wood is one of the hardest... we call it "Malabayabas" because of the look of its trunk looks like a guava tree... guava in Philippines is "Bayabas"

Tristaniopsis decorticata or Malabayabas is a related yet different species to Eucalyptus deglupta or the Rainbow Eucalyptus. Both, however, are within the plant family Myrtaceae. Psidium guajava is also within the same plant family, hence why they have some similarities such as their bark and few compounds. The Rainbow Eucalyptus smells more like their guava cousins than their fellow Eucalyptus brothers.
