You did extremely well. You even swallowed the "Djungelvrål". Most people I've seen it have just panicked. You're troopers. The reason why sour and salty candy is so popular in Scandinavia is because we like to play with our senses. Most humans naturally like sweet things, but we feel it's fun to mix it up. After three sweet candies, you want a taste breaker, sour or salt. Some of us just prefer only sour and salt candy.

True, and the bite sized assortments like Daim, Skotte, Pigall, French nougat, and above all Double nougat (dubbelnougat) which is a double supersoft-melt-in-your-hand-if-you're-not-quick-enough bar of hazelnut and almond nougat. It's to die for. Edit: I mistakenly write gold nougat which is from another brand Cloetta, really tasty too.

The darker blue bag, named "Gott & Blandat" (Tasty & Mixed" is called that, due to a phenomenon at their old factories. It was based upon what was made in the factory that specific day and they just put the different candies in a bag. But it has been a true staple for decades, so now it's called that due to tradition.

Fun fact. OLW was formed through a co-operation between Wasabröd and the American chip manufacturer Borden Foods in 1967. The name ‘OLW’ is an abbreviation for Old London Wasa, as Borden's factory in New York was called Old London. In 1975, the name was abandoned and the company was known simply as ‘OLW’ from that year onwards.

Nötcreme is from what I’ve heard originally meant to be used for frosting, as you mentioned, but people bought it and ate it as candy because they liked it so much. It’s been in that kind of packaging forever so I guess the company just went with it.

Fascinating! It definitely tastes like frosting but the packaging makes a great excuse to just eat it straight. You would need at least ten packets to frost a whole cake! But I bet that would be tasty

@@erik.... I am 45 and Nöt-Creme is still party of my pick and mix when I get it :) Either I am an exception or I never grew up :) Nöt-Creme is best when you just open up a corner. Squeze a little bit out and eat that and then keep on doing it. Opening the entire package and putting everything in your mouth at once can be a bit... overwhelming.

When i grew up in the 80s and 90s, we squeezed 2-3 of these packs into a Fralla (bread roll) and ate as a efternoon snack(/candy)

Smash is a Norwegian snack that is now also produced by OLW for Sweden. Tyrkisk Peber is originally from Denmark but a popular classic in Sweden, currently produced by a Finnish company.

@@DigitalAwakening Originally, Marabou is a subsidiary of Norwegian Freia, with Norwegian owners. I'm guessing they sold the same chocolate in both countries under different names to begin with. The companies worked closely together until 1990, when Freia bought all the shares in Marabou. Three years later both companies were acquired by Kraft Foods. I have realized that Marabou has changed over the years, so I suppose they are different today. Therefore, it's not the first time Norwegian sweets have found their way across the border. However, Smash is produced by Nidar, which is today the largest supplier of candies in the Norwegian market. Both Nidar and Freia have good chocolate, and so does Minde. I prefer Freia and Minde over Nidar chocolate. I have the impression that they contain more cocoa, which I like.

So, just a tip: "Kex" means biscuit, so if you ask for a "kex" noone will understand that you mean that specific candy. You'll have to say the whole thing, "kexchoklad".

There is an even bigger version of the kexchoklad and yes they are nasty cause you just like more of it. The "mjölkchoklad" is without a doubt my favorite, can taste very different if you just chew it or let it melt in your mouth or if it comes from the fridge or room temp, but it is amazing.

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks Hello, nice vid. The pre-made Licorice shot is nooo good, better do it yourself as Torben described =) You can add some water to the vodka to make it with less alcohol. Put the bottle(s) in the freezer for a while to really cool it down. It's super yummie!

Weird tip about the Super sour "S":es. I went through chemo therapy two years ago and the worst of all the side effects for me was that I could not drink cold water. As soon as I got something cold in my mouth my throat just closed up and tingled like crazy. I discovered that the "S":es somehow gave me this "drinking cold water"-feel all on its own. I know it sounds really weird, but I have since shared this tip with other people going through chemo and they experience the same effect.

As a norwegian i must set the record straight that smash is from norway, made by nidar and only licensed to OWL, and that marobou is the same sorts thing just for freia, the name marabou is the name of the stork species that are printed on the chocolate itself. (Yes I am salty)

Yes, swedes traditionally are bad at eating spicy stuff. Our local cuisine is very tame in the spice department (I read in a cook book from the 70s that 2 garlic cloves were considered "spicy" in a recipe lmao) so our tolerance comes from abroad but much of it has been toned town to match our taste buds.

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks I can proudly say we use way more garlic nowadays than the 70s. I've heard somewhere that spicy food is often a part of the cuisine in warmer countries to mask the taste of rotting food, and also because those countries have the spices to begin with. Sweden doesn't naturally have chilis or anything like that and a cold climate so we just put a shit ton of salt on it. No wonder we love salty licorice.

In countrys where they have bad meat or bad posibility to preserve food, they use lots of spices to cover up the taste of half spoiled meat, then they get used to it. (the list of countrys that eats really hot food gives away the connection pretty well) I prefer the meat flavour over something drenched in garlic and hot spices, often I use only a little salt and pepper when preparing the food, and add more after I tasted the meat and a garlic butter on top.

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks actually when garlic first came to Sweden most people would cut a garlic clove in half, then just rub the cut side on the inside of the pan or pot, before throwing away the garlic clove, then cook whatever they where cooking, so yeah, it was really really tame, and I once heard someone describing Swedish food as "salty with a hint of bland". This has changed a lot over the years though and most people of the younger generation eat quite a lot of Asian food like Chinese, Thai or Indian food. So there is definitely hope for the future.

Crisp-brand-preference depends on the flavour. Estrella’s got the best sour cream & onion, but OLW’s got the Sir salty vinegar crisps and they are a-mazing! I would never buy Pingles. And since I’m swedish I obviously like licorice.

"S-MARK's" Are super popular although they're sour as f. However, Most people in Sweden can chug like 2-3 bags of them atleast in a short period of time. I guess it's something you get used too since most of us start eating it as kids. Both Sour candy's and liquorice is without a doubt the most "Popular" candy types here. But again, It's really the kind of candy you either absolutely hate or love. A lot of Swedish people are super sensitive to spices. Don't know why though lol, I've been eating spicy food my entire life. Honestly, I can't even imagine eating food unless it's spicy asf. But yeah, i guess most people i know can barely have chili in their food, which is kind of funny since I'm the type that eat them raw lol *If the candy is black and from Sweden, It's always liquorice~* x)

About team OWL and team Estrella, there's dozens of brands of chips in Sweden. I'm sure both those companies would looove if that was a thing. Also they really threw you under the bus with the salty licorice, but you took it like champs. Very impressed. I would almost argue it's a war crime to give Djungelvrål to unsuspecting non-Nordic people. I've heard it described as "being punched in the mouth with a fist full of salt" or "eating the ocean". But you guys did fantastic. My favorite Swedish snack is probably Dubbel Nougat. Disappointed that wasn't in your test because it's so good, in my opinion. Sweetish Candy store in the US has you covered with all your Nordic candies, if you want more. :)

The part about Ahlgrens bilar was kind of wrong,they were trying to make marshmallows but it did not turn out well (or maybe even better since it stuck and got popular :P) They have quite recently come out with bigger versions of the candy.

The white monkey you got in the djungelvrål was a mistake, it is very rare, but I've got a simular piece one time. The company is very proud of their quality so when you get anything that isn't supposed to be in the bag, even if it is just a lump of salt, you should contact them and they will send you several new bags to compensate.

That's a great idea! Estrella makes thinner crisps and OLW makes them chunkier. When it comes to vinegar chips I actually prefer OLW (they make them thin, for some reason).

So I'm team OLW, they make thin crisps, but I buy Estrella's vinegar chips (because for a long while OLW didn't make these, at least not available where I live) and although they make chunky crisps for some reason their vinegar chips are super thin. But I actually tried OLW's vinegar chips the other day and they were much, MUCH tastier!! So, I'm a complete 100% OLW fan now. Sorry I got confused. I don't eat chips very often now as they give me cramps since my gallbladder was removed after an acute infection. All fatty foods give cramps, unfortunately 😒. But sometimes I can't resist 😏

Daim is pronounced "dime" like your money...its similar to a skor-bar. The Grilled-Onion chips is amazing. And yes there is really a OLW vs Estrella going on over here. You did a great job trying the salted liquorice. This is such a special and required taste.

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks yep. When Estrella changed their recipe for their Sourcreme and Onion I switched to OLW.. don't like the new taste of Estrella. Also.. OLW have the Ranch taste wich I also like (not the hot Ranch though. Don't like them). Dill och gräslök (Dill and chives) i still prefer Estrella. And Estrella Grill is a good one if you prefer straight onion crisps ;) So I'm sort of on both teams. Depending on what taste I have the urge for.. (and yes, sweden has a lot of different tastes to choose from.) Same goes for cheese doodles wich both brands have variations of.. maybe stars? Or balls? Or cheddar? Maybe you like Jalapeños? I'm sure you could find your perfect taste here. And if not there is allways a bunch of dips to enhance the taste ;) I like Peanut rings... crispy corn rings with peanut butterish taste... so good....

The cheese doodles are actually supposed to be the same as the ones you have. The american ones are made by a company called Old London. The swedish ones are made by a company that was a cooperation (don't know if it still is) between Old London and the Swedish company Wasa (the company that makes different kinds of "knäckebröd" or crisp breads). Together the initials of Old London and Wasa spells OLW, which has since become one of the biggest potato chip manufacturers in Sweden.

Turkisk peppar works best in vodka. Crush a bag and put into a bottle and let sit until dissolved. Makes really great shots. Also, team Estrella, focus point: dill and chives flavor. Can't beat it.

I think you can just about use any hard candy to put in for flavor. I don't know which part of the States you're in but there is a company in PA, Sweetish candy. They have absolutely everything you can find in Sweden. As far as drinks go here in south Sweden we make slabbedang as well. You add one part water to one part sugar. Heat it until dissolved and clear. Turn off heat. Then add one part hard unflavored liquor, like vodka or brännvin, and juice concentrate or nectar or essence to flavor. Put in container and store in freezer. After it's turned into a boozy slushy, you put a few scoops in a tall glass and add what ever tonic or soda you prefer to match the flavor with. Endless combos and so good on warm skymmer days. Also a bit dangerous because you can't really taste the alcohol.

I've eaten salty licorice since I was little, and we used to compete to find the saltiest type of pick and mix candy. We had some hard, pear shaped ones at my grocery store, and they were extreeme... never found them somewhere else. I'm not a fan of sweet licorice though, and I don't like the non black kind...

Tursik Peber or Turkish Pepper is actually a Danish candy, I recommend taking some (like 5 to 10 pieces) and drop them in 20ml of vodka and let them dissolve, that is the tastiest way to enjoy them!

Perhaps a bit late, but try making shots out of the Turkisk Peppar. Just fill a bottle with (as whole as possible) Turkisk Peppar and fill up with vodka. Let it rest for a few days until all candy has been completely melted. Enjoy.

There is some black pepper in the Tyrkisk Peber but it's not that much so marketing it as "hot" is a bit of a misnomer. It's not hot as in chili-spicyness but rather they are fairly salty.

I am one of those that are on the fence whether liquorice is good or not. Generally I don’t like it or eat it, but sometimes I can get these cravings for salt and especially liquorice. The best one is fresh Finnish liquorice, or in the summer vanilla ice cream with raspberry and liquorice swirls.

Real liquorice comes from the liquoriceroot and is actually sweet, thus the difference between sweet liquorice and salt liquorice that has added salmiak (ammonium chloride) which makes it salty. Products with liquorice can also contain anise extract to some variations.

Turkish Peber is used(young crush it and put it in home made vodka etc) and bought a lot in Sweden, but Fazer is Finnish. To Swedes it is just candy, it is not strong, but it have a cumulative effect... eating 10 vs eating 1 is much different for someone that don't like liquorice. Also "Supersalta Krutdurkar" from Lakritskungen is my favorite liquorice right now. Swedes like liquorice the same way USA people like sour candy....I personally h8!!! sour candy...why would I ever wanna eat raw lemons all the time!!

​@@SaltyandSweetSnacks Yea, not many people know about that law, it is one of those law that i doubt anyone wish to enforce or care about as I never heard of anyone losing their life from eating liquorice :P (it might have to do with the glycyrrhizic acid % is allowed to be higher in denmark than in sweden) If you have a heavy salt diet, sodium, you should not eat a lot of liquorice as the liquorice make the salt(sodium) stay in the body, but the only problem i ever had from over consumption of liquorice is diarrhea lol(which might help old people :P)

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks The one more common I think of when it come to sweet chili is called "Käck original" and there is another type called "Skolkritor". Looks like those chalks you write with on a blackboard. Handmade quality licorice is the best way to buy from an online store called www.kryddlandet.se But since i don´t know where you live it might get to expensive for little candy. But ofcourse you can email and ask them. And Marabou have also dark 70% Chokalete with varius tastes like rasberries, sea salt, chili and cacao. That is really good chokolate.

@@SaltyandSweetSnacks Yes there are some who imports directly from the US. Mainly because we like to grill like you do. Not only meat, we also grill fish. I grew up on grilled fish in the summers. But I like to grill meat. I usually buy a rub called "slap ay mama" and grill souce called "St John´s vanilla and black berries hot souce". And of course I have tried some of your chips. Love them. Hello! I'm a Swede and loooove salty licoriche. BUT: you shouldn't really eat more than, let's say five or six pieces of it, as it's loaded with something called Glyrrhizine which affects your heart rate and makes it beat faster. And that is not good in the long run, so eat it sparsely!
