Tasting the Difference: Rachel Barrie Discusses Sherry Influence in Scotch

Many scotch whiskies are aged or finished in sherry casks, but not all sherry casks are the same. Rachel Barrie, master blender for BenRiach, GlenDronach, and Glenglassaugh, sat down with senior whisky specialist Susannah Skiver Barton to explain the differences between whiskies matured in oloroso versus Pedro Ximénez (PX) casks. Nice video! Thanks for sharing. My favorite is the 18 Allardice. Rachel did a good job replicating the previous edition of the 15 YO - Revival, nevertheless IMHO Billy’s 15 blend is a bit superior.

Hello, I'm Johnny 🙂. For several years now I have been tormented by one question 🙂 tell me please 🙂. We all know that the Glendronach distillery was closed from 1995 to 2002, and after the opening there was a shortage of young spirits. What kind and what year of alcohol did they pour, for example, in a 12-year-old Glendron, the original 2012/2013 or Alardyce 2018, or Parliament 2020?

Dear God, it's the usual meaningless stuff. You never get any interesting input from whisky sellers about sherry influence in whisky. Rachel Barrie is just doing a great sales job here. These are good whiskys if you like the sherried style but if you really want to dig deeper into the knowledge ask a rep these questions. What bodega did the cask come from; where did the oak originate from (Spanish bodegas use a lot of American oak); what liquid was in the cask and how long was it in it? Whisky companies do everything possible to avoid those questions.

Oloroso and PX are not 'the two main styles of sherry' and it's a bit dispiriting to hear the head blender for Glendronach make this erroneous claim. There are at least 6 'main styles' of sherry.
