#gadbad #dianarestaurant #udupi
most popular vegetarian restaurant in udupi, hotel diana, vegetable cutlet, gadbad, ice cream, udupi ice cream, udupi hotel diana, gadbad ice cream, udupi, karnataka
When this enterprise conjured up the name Diana in the sixties, it was meant to sell cool drinks and ice cream in Udupi, then a sleepy town in South Canara. But because cool drinks and ice creams weren’t popular in this sleepy South Canara town those days, the Pai family decided to diversify into snacks. Their first creation, a vegetable cutlet, then a foreign item to the Udupi populace, took nearly five years to curry favour with the locals. Along the way, they also accidentally conjured up an ice cream concoction, the Diana Gadbad. Whilst the early days may have been tough, these 60-year old timeless classics are the most popular items on the menu today. Hope you enjoy this episode, take care and stay safe.
Vegetable Cutlet
A potato and beetroot patty that is flavoured with a seasoning of curry leaves, lentils and spices, this cutlet is a delicious medley of flavours and textures. The accompanying homemade chutney and sauce make for worthy companions to this Diana classic.
Rs. 75 (usd 1)

Diana Gadbad
An accidental invention of this eatery nearly 60 years ago when the restaurant’s founder, Mohandas Pai, put together a concoction of three ice creams, because he had very little quantity of each, topped with cashew nuts to feed a large group of customers who dropped in unexpectedly for ice cream. And because it was prepared in a ‘gadibidi’ (kannada word for ‘hurry’) it came to be known as the Gadbad. A layered creation with strawberry ice cream, eight types of dry fruits, fresh fruits, a special ‘Horlicks’ cake, vanilla cake, no two spoonfuls of this delicious dessert are the same.

The only "restaurant" we were taken to by our parents in childhood. Frankly speaking we never knew the concept of eating out or the term restaurant. Eating out meant eating at Diana hotel. Who remembers the old location in the middle of the city with a spiralling ramp to climb up with a water well and bimbili tree on the side and the fresh aroma of Poori Kurma😊

The earlier building that housed the restaurant had an old world charm accentuated by mangalore tiled roofs and small windows that you typically find in and around Mangalore. They had to relocate when a portion of the building had to be demolished for road widening. Two things remain unchanged even now. One, the staff with pristine white uniform going about serving the customers with military like discipline. Another, is the owner Vittal Pai always at the counter keeping an eye on each and every table. In terms of food, it still draws people for its Gadbad and veg cutlet. Apart from these two items I don't think there are any other dishes that kind of stand out. Infact during my last visit I was disappointed with the masala dosa that was served. But more than the food, it's the name 'Diana restaurant' that takes you on a nostalgic ride to an era when life was simple without one being spoilt for choices.

I have been a regular visitor to Diana for last 2 decades or so. While the taste of the Gudbud hasn't changed much over the years but the size is definitely shrinking. Instead I wish Vitthal sir restores the original size for a higher fare and offer the current size of Gudbud as a mini version for the 100 odd bucks he charges. That is what the other popular Udupi restaurant "Woodlands" does. Speaking of "Woodlands" please do an episode on it and while you are there do taste their Buns, Rava Dosa, Muddo and Gudbud :-)

The greatness of Mangaloreans is that they are simple people who've achieved great things. No matter what their religious background is may I add. In their small way, they achieve. Kripal is one such example perhaps. The moment Mangalore and Mangaloreans begin to think beyond communities, religion, diets etc, Tulunadu will finally have the potential to becoming a global educational, tourism and tech powerhouse. Mangaloreans have this in them because it's ingrained in them. All they need is a forward thinking leader to make this happen. I digress ofcourse. Great video Kripal.

Food evokes memories. This was at a time of our idyllic childhood when we stayed in our cousins house in udupi for summer vacation. When it was time to return home my aunt would take us kids to Diana for a treat. Cutlets ice-cream masala dosa. Yummy. Even their poori kurma was awesome The smell lingered on our hands . And Mr kripal kindled old sweet memories. And listening to how it became popular was really stirring. Imagine in a holy temple town where temple food in Krishna mutt avoids some vegetables like tomato etc to persever for 5 long years to find acceptance to explain to customers that it's vegetarian wow that's some story. Even humble tomato sauce . Great effort 👏

The usual accompaniments with Vegetable Chop are quite different - salad comprising onion, cucumber, carrot cut into thin strips, tomato sauce, and most importantly kasundi, a tangier, spicier version of mustard sauce.

Anegudde temple food is also what I remember. Out of Udupi - Subhramania temple, Kateel temple, Horanadu temple, Adinatheshwara temple,Bajpai are also fresh in my memory. 5) Diana hotel: Bread Masala, cutlet, Gadbad ice-cream and other ice creams available there too. 6) Woodland Restaurant: All the dishes here whether tiffin, starters, main course is delicious! I distinctly remember the Gobi Manchurian, curd rice, Thali, Puri kurma and bread masala here. 7) Charmuri in Carstreet: My childhood summer vacation memories always had Charmuri from Carstreet in it. An absolute delight! There is also a tiny and homely delicious Charmuri stall at the entrance of anegudde temple, at the base. Must try ❤️

I was waiting for this review on Diana hotel...what I can say pride of my hometown Udupi...I spent my childhood days having cutlet, dahivada, puri kurma and Gudbud from Diana... Me and my family have become your fan Kripal Sir...your presentation is exceptional.. especially when you start explaining the technicalities while eating the dish 😀 Do review other notable eateries in Udupi 1. Woodlands hotel (where authentic masala dosa was invented) 2.Mitra Samaj in krishna temple premises (well known for Goli baje with a secret recipe and bullet idlies) 3. Ram bhavan hotel ..well known for evening snacks especially pathrode 4.There is a small chat stall opposite to Sanskrit College Udupi which make outstanding Paubhajis

My mom used to talk about the gadbad ice cream at Diana very fondly from her days there in the early 70s. I have never been to Udipi so hopefully in one of my next visits to India I can go visit. I will share this video with my mom for her fond memories.

I have my old memories attached to hotel diana and their famous gadbad and veg cutlet. But in those days kamat's hotel in udupi was famous for their gadbad. I miss that hotel very much. Diana is the best and will remain to be the best. I miss their old building though. Thanku so much for sharing this vlog. Its a nostalgic moment for me.
