i wish i had kept my 1980 mini van, the shell was totally rebuilt and mint, i was looking for a 1275 gt engine for it but i got layed off and hit hard times so had to sell it ( i virtually gave it away £80 in 1994 ) before i could finish it,

Great update, by the way, the boot badge has little plastic nipply (is that even a word 🧐) things that push into the holes in the boot lid then the badge just pushes on.

100% go silver on black pressed looks mint. I was always under the impression black plates were for "tax exempt" cars which surely on an old V that would fall into category. Remember it's rolling now anything over 40, I had a 1988 VW T25 with an Irish dateless plate and followed your thinking it looked old so I put black plates. It would take a copper with a bit of knowledge to know the build dates on certain gen of cars like us petrol head classic owners do.
@lewis72 Жыл бұрын
Black plates were made illegal in 1973. The government allowed pre-'73 cars to keep the black plates. They screwed up for 5-6 years or so by allowing black plates on 40 year old cars on a rolling basis, which, up until 2012 wasn't an issue but then in 2013 1973 cars _could_ have black plates and '74 cars in 2014 and so on. Only in 2019 (I think) the government realised that they had screwed up and so stopped black plates on a rolling 40-year-old basis.
@easyeaz Жыл бұрын
@@lewis72 I wasn't sure on the basis but that sounds about right what you say, I do like the fact if it suits the way and age car looks then use. And any late 70s or 80s might look better with reflective plates
@lewis72 Жыл бұрын
@@easyeaz It's on the government website somewhere. Your choice of course re. plate style but IMO, if you're going to go down the originality route, you'd go for the plastic letters on white/yellow background.

@@lewis72absolutely spot on description of what actually happened and my pet hate is not only Ben’s LCD one but also black and silver plates on cars that are newer than 72 ( the government’s unintentioned loophole creation causing it to be legal up to 1980 still doesn’t make it “right”) 😂 Ironically back in 73 the trend was to fit the new style plates to make your old car look more modern, but that of course was legal as reflective were supposed to be safety improvement too 😂

@@gimble447 Yes, in my memory, we've had an H plate Hillman GT, an L plate VW bus, an H plate VW Beetle and an L plate Triumph 2500. Non of which had silver-on-black plates.

Know what you mean about the LED stuff but I do like a 3D style plate. Reminds me of the old days when all plates were metal and punched for the letters and numbers which were 4D style plastic. Used to sell them back in the day. Makes the plates more tactile I think.
@MrManBuzz Жыл бұрын
Just get the metal plates then. You can still get them. I've got a pair on my car and they look so much better than those stupid 4D ones.

Great update on the Mini, Ben, and great progress - black on silver plates…….yes ! She’ll be a real black pearl when that Snake Oil goes on. Agree with earlier comment abt Wax-oiling the doors before they get closed up. Hope the Porsche got sorted, and agree with you on the LED light Brigade - over here (HK) they not only put really bright led’s in to ‘illuminate’ the plates, but spray the plates with hairspray, which instantly reflects the flash of the speed cameras - absolutely not condoning this, but clever! Keep ‘em comin! JCHK Looking forward to some Truck wiring next

In the past i've found car wax brings rear light clusters up a treat don't know about using on the plastic headlamp units though sometimes reacts to the clear plastic.

Those boot badges used to have a rubber securing grommet the badge pins snugged into as i remember on my 850 ..@Tasty Classics.. p.s I used my carpet to cover the boot panel :)

Nooo !! Silver-on-black plates is wrong. They were banned back in the day for cars 1973 onwards. The government then screwed up for a few years and allowed them on cars 40 years old but then allowed that 40-year-old rule to roll, this allowing cars post 1973 to have them when they got 40 years old. The government fixed this screw up in, I think, 2019, so cars older than 1978 can't have them and those 1973-1978 can have them even though at they time of sale, they couldn't.

Nobody cares if you choose black and silver pressed plates or black and yellow plates. You have what you choose. My personal peeve is modern plates on classic or vintage motorcycles. I remember pressed aluminium plates, black with raised silver characters or yellow with black raised characters. So my elderly bikes have these. The modern, flat plastic plates, love them, on modern vehicles.
