If you jump into a wall, sometimes (or rarely) you would clip into the wall. If you jump the right frame you would do a wall jump. Now it's hard, but it's possible to wall jump multiple times by wall jumping off a wall going back a bit then going back to the wall. (The best information I can explain)

SummoningSalt explains the concept of the wall-jump in a number of his SMB trilogy runs very well. It has to do with something called "sub-pixel manipulation." For every pixel, there are 16 sub-pixels, and if Mario is able to manipulate it so he has a high (8+) sub-pixel count, he will be far enough into the wall when he collides with it to have 1 frame of time to jump. Unfortunately, this specific iteration can only be done with a TAS because of the frame-perfect inputs needed to not only maintain said high sub-pixel count after the wall-jump but also get the additional jump. RTA runners can get 1 jump, but that's the maximum. Sub-pixel manipulation is also the reason Mario can wall-clip. The developers wanted to prevent Mario from getting stuck in the walls, so when he clips into the wall it's coded to push Mario to the right in order to force him out. It's a common tactic to use this to skip major portions of some of the later stages in SMB3, with some stages saving entire minutes due to the clip. Honestly, though, I recommend just watching SummoningSalt's videos on the SMB games; he does a FAR better job.

When you just move left/right normally with the boot, he'll always make small jumps. During these small jumps, you can do a regular jump with the A button. So just move to make a small jump over a pit and you can jump whenever you want in midair.
