Considering you can apparently skip half the screen with it, there's a chance the developers took the vine out of the game to prevent glitches.

@@csolisryou can’t do that without pressing left and right at the same time, which isn’t possible with an unmodified NES controller. it also works on vines, they just aren’t as common
