Tata Steel has confirmed plans to cut 2,800 jobs across the UK, by closing down both blast furnaces at its Port Talbot plant.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The firm said the move was part of its transition to greener and more sustainable steel-making operations. Unions called the move an "absolute disgrace".

We all know we are in this situation because the EU never took action on cheap Chinese steel dumping. Then after Brexit the expectation was that the UK will be able to stop China and revive the industry but it didn't! Tata clearly didn't want to have to axe any jobs. It is not their general policy to have people lose their jobs. Tata is run by a large moral compass with over 66% of their group shares being given to their charitable organisations and is considered the most trustworthy/reliable employer by many.

That used to be the problem, the new problem is we are applying net zero principles with the attempt at reducing costly carbon credits and the Chinese and others aren't. The bits they want to shut are the massive iron making end, including, materials handling, burden preparation, coke ovens, blast furnaces etc and just make steel from existing scrap by making and using new arc furnaces, to cut emmissions and carbon dioxide release. The trouble is, there will be no new virgin steel made, and the price of scrap will rise like a rocket, making the whole of steel making in entirety, untenable, madness !

who use the steel? EU, so when you leave EU that is using the steel, what happens? no more demand for steel! sometime when I read post like this, I just have to question if IQ has massively declined. brexit is a failure, when are people going to own up to this fact that the logic behind it is flawed.

@@mujur9101 It may be an Indian owned company but it is the British branch of the company that is affected. It's reducing it's UK staff to be more competitive in prices because cheap Chinese made steel still makes its way into the UK market despite measures put to keep the Chinese from doing this both in the EU and the UK. The cheap steel comes via other South East Asian countries! The UK government apparently cannot force companies to buy more expensive British made steel.

Well here's a brief one-liner summary. TATA Steel (world's one of the biggest and the best steel manufacturers) was forced to spend $3.5 bn. (to achieve net zero carbon emissions target of EU/uk, by shutting down all the blast furnaces and bringing in Electric furnace) at a loss making plant in Britain (obviously Tata refused and demanded "at least" half of the burden to be bear by the govt., cuz it was their aspirations/target not company's) but Britain is crumbling nowadays they offered only $500mn. TATA with a heavy disappointment accepted as both UK and Indian authorities were begging them not to sell the plant (china might buy). So to achieve UK/EU target 🎯 they did this. As electrical furnaces require very few people.

What a stupid, weaselly comment! Producing steel and all other manufactured goods in China etc results in MORE pollution. The industry is only losing money because of insane energy costs in Europe compared to elsewhere. Governments should sort out energy costs before anything else. Your country buys weapons from British weapons systems manufacturers just like America has done since 1900. It doesn't make sense to just hand cash out without creating jobs. They could buy steel from this factory and delay transition to green factories, but they likely stopped subsidizing it since China has slowed down and you're no longer in the EU. Economist look at the overall employment situation and GDP. It could be horrible for the UK, but the US is growing even faster than china.

@@Andrew-rc3vh "Exponential growth" has a definition that you're not using right. The debt service and interest isn't growing exponentially. If it were, interest rates would grow triggering a recession. The sovereign debt is of the federal government that began you invited us to end WWII and rebuild Europe. We have fifty states, hundreds of thousands of local government, 340 million people, who don't carry debt. One of the benefits of having a global empire and the international reserve currency is that we can get away with it. China has debt higher than GDP, which extents to citizens and companies. That's why you don't hear projections of them becoming the largest economy this decade or for the foreseeable future. Other than having the world's currency, the US has been able to get away with it because unlike the UK, Japan, and China we have millions of migrants to grow the population. You can't be xenophobic and against free trade unless you want steel factories shut down and don't have a working age population to pay for pensioners.
