steel and iron making is a country strategic resource - we need to be producing our own and not be dependent on other countries. This is great news.

It was a great experience visiting this amazing steel mill earlier this year to take lots of pictures and videos for my illustrated book.

Thank you for your wonderful in-depth look at the logistics and scale of the operation. What has been explained makes sense and in due course will allow Port Talbot to continue steel production and ultimately keep jobs within the community for a much longer period in time. Its great to know that both TATA the owners are putting a huge amount of capitol into the site along with a hefty contribution from the Tax payers of this country into a well thought out alternative. Its just such a pity that in particular the Unions are hell bent on twisting the situation to a political scenario rather than accepting that change needs to take place and some will be fortunate to enough to continue in the not too distant future.

Melting down old fridges and tin cans to make more fridges and tin cans is not steel production, there is no capability to process iron ore into steel, and that is a strategic ability that we have now lost. We can not be considered truly independent without the abliity to produce steel from ore. Taxpayers should not be contributing to this travesty

@@mickymondo7463 Sadly due to the Welsh Assemblies Climate Bill passed in March 2023, it was inevitable that the furnaces would close as the proposed Carbon Capture plant wasn't feasible. Its even more gauling for you that it will continue in India and have to be imported into the UK, but at least you still have SOME jobs, rather than non. My wife along with 42,000 bank staff lost her job with a few months notice and no-one in the UK even mentioned it....her job is now being done in India. The people at fault here were Drakeford and his merry tribe in the Senydd who wanted to our nation to be clear of pollution, filled with tree's and no transport. Now as a direct result we have no industry!...Valero in Pembrokeshire is potentially next - talks ongoing.

I get EAF but at the expense of our Port Talbot brothers jobs and supporting industry. Another shambolic 40 years of mishandling the British steel industry - the best high quality, low sulphar steel in the world. A golden opportunity squandered by successive government's. Stand strong fellas 💪

Very Interesting, am I right in thinking that the E.F. will only be utilized to melt scrap steel, it's not a replacement for the oldblast furnaces that made steel from raw materials. If this is the case in the future will steel making in the Uk will essentially be a recycling process, not suggesting this is any less envolved, but someone somewhere will still have to make steel from raw materials. Also what sort of electrical power will be needed to run this new furnace.

A good explanation of some of the practical aspects, which the media do not cover, or even understand. I would be interested to know the implications for ULC steels, as these are critical for ULC steel grades using EAF, as these products are a significant part of the order book and of the galv market supplied via Zodiac.

In the meantime, we put your query to a member of our Technical team and had the following reply, I hope this helps: We will retain our existing degasser facility in secondary steelmaking that will allow us to make ULC grades for the Zodiac line. We see great demand for such high recycled content offering in to the automotive sector.

Not mentioned in the video is the fact that, due to the underlying nature of the site, any works have to stay within the existing footprint. The site was heavily made up when the original steel works was built and it's a lasting monument to what long term, strategic planning can create. I think Tata is one of the few Companies in the world who still have long term vision, beyond next quarter's bottom line, and will make this work.
