Because Tate has A LOT more redeeming qualities and has different motives for his actions. Tate's transgressions seem to be done out of innocence and Kai's done out of cruelty and power hunger.

Yes, she died from an overdose on sleeping pills, Tate tried to save her but it was to late, she vomited some of the pills back up, but she had to many and not all of them came out..
