I use unwaxed dental tape to make my magic loops (i just keep a pack in my tatting bag). That way if i decide to do another project on different shuttles i can just break off some more tape. It is also easier when set up in loops as you can use a bobby pin to help pull it through (slide the bobby pin part way on and then wrap the tape around both sides at a 90° angle. Then middle and pointer either side and thumb underneath. Just gives you something to grip)

Thank you for sharing your tip Cassandra! I can't quite visualise how to use the bobby pin to pull... but it's always nice to hear about how others do things.

Thank you for this. I enjoy your videos. Could you please show how to fold and tat when flipping the work and/or joining motifs, especially in the middle of the motif. I'm not sure if I'm asking this right, but I can't seem to end a motif without getting everything tangled up and confused. I learned how to tat when I was young (back in the 60's) by my grandmother, yet I didn't do anything with it until all these years later. Now I'm relearning and you are my new teacher. I hope you can help with my confusing question.

Hello Sara, I'd like to help but I'm not sure I understand your question... do you mean how to join back at the beginning where you need to fold your tatting to make the last join?

@@11Frivole hello! I was reading through the comments and that is what I need help with. How do you join back to the beginning of a circular piece, like a doily, without getting it joined twisted or tangled. I personally have a very difficult time with this and usually have to rewatch several of your videos just to follow along, with my own pattern counts, in order to finish a round on a doily or say, the edging for a handkerchief. Thank you.

Thank you for your wonderful videos! They are SO helpful. What size FireLine thread do you use when you tat with size 10 or 20 embroidery thread?
@11Frivole

Thank you, I'm glad you find the videos helpful. I happen to have both 4lb and 6lb Fireline because I use them for beading and find both work fine but if I was buying just one, I'd go with the 6lb. If you don't want to invest in Fireline, you can try it with just a strong piece of thread that matches or is slightly smaller in size than your tatting thread (it has to be quite strong though!). Fireline is super strong and slides nicely so that's why I think it's particularly good for magic loops.

I'm sorry to bother but I'm curious; why not, at least when you are inserting the first loop, insert the loop without missing out that first half stitch(or the last one when finishing)? What's the practicality of it, if there is one? *(Also, appreciate the additional clarifications in the videos for sharing more info in accordance with different circumstances one can face while tatting) :)
@11Frivole
@11Frivole 2 жыл бұрын
It's because the last/first half stitch is usually tighter than the others so it can be more difficult to pull the thread through that first half stitch, missing it makes it easier to slide through the stitches at the end.
