I inherited my grandmother's crochet hooks and tatting shuttles. I purchased several beginning tatting books, but I couldn't figure it out. Thank you for making the movement so exaggerated and simple. You said that beginners need to practice double stitches to get muscle memory, and I will try again. I am able to follow crochet patterns. Are tatting patterns just as easy to follow ?

Thank you for finally showing in minute detail how to hold the thread (both shuttle and spool) in hands. Other videos made me "dizzy" trying to figure out what the threads were doing, and the hands kept "getting in the way." Hi Marilee, I tried your motif with the 5 rings and 5 chains and it looks beautiful. Then I decided to try and make a motif with 8 rings and 8 chains and it came out beautifully, so then I made another one with 8 rings and I joined the chain picot to the first motifs picot on the chain and again the chain picot to the first motifs chain picot and now I can keep on joining motifs to make a runner for table , or a tray cloth. The stitch that forms the picot becomes the first stitch fot the next pattern - you have solved the confusion in my mind. I always wondered why there were less number of stitches after the picot. Thanks for the information.

The thread for tatting needs to be very smooth, so that the double stitches slide easily on it. I personally like Lizbeth or DMC Cordonnet Special, but any smooth crochet cotton should work well for tatting.

A larger thread is easier to see when learning. I'd say a size 10, or a size 5 or 3 (the smaller the number, the thicker the thread). A variegated or multicolor thread is great because it helps to see how the stitches are forming. Even using 2 different solid colors will help to see if the stitches are forming correctly.

I've tried 3 times so far to make the ring, and when I try to close it by pulling the yarn, nothing slides! Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? I follow your tutorial step by step. Thanks for posting.

The problem is that one or more of the stitches have not “flipped” or transferred, from the shuttle thread to the thread held on your hand. It’s very common for beginners to really not notice what is happening with the transfer of the stitch (loop) from one thread to the other. Do try again! Eventually it will make sense, and then become automatic (like riding a bike).

I just got a shuttle but there’s a bobbin already in it but how do you get the thread onto it the bobbin doesn’t come out. Or o don’t k is how to get it out I have bonbons ready ti go with the thread already n the bobbin

The bobbin should come out just by pushing it out, from the side. Although there are a few styles of bobbin tatting shuttles that are held together by screws, they are usually handmade and uncommon.

@@mariegreen6912 oh, perhaps that shuttle is a collector’s item. What I would do is to buy a new, inexpensive shuttle - or several in different styles to try, to see which you like.
