Your video was perfect. I dropped a new (old stock) GM OEM HEI distributor in my 89 IROC-Z and it fell into place perfectly on the second try. I marked the rotor and base beforehand with a sharpie and when re-timing it was already within 2 degrees of where it was at before the replacement dizzy went in. No need for all this top dead center stuff if you just mark everything before you take it out. Thank you for your video!

@@TattsForLife The new distributor didnt fix my miss/lack of power which happens right around 30 minutes of running (when its gets hot). But I am narrowing down the culprit one possible gremlin at a time. I was really hoping it was a dying pickup coil or ICM but both are new and the car is still doing it. At least I know its not the dizzy now!

I was told to re-locate my MSD Digital 6 Ignition away from the firewall which may be too close to my passenger side header (causing it to heat up and fail right around the 30 minute mark) to somewhere maybe under the dash inside and see if the problem goes away...I am pumped to give that a go now. yes you can, a stock cap should also work, the high energy part would be cause of the more powerful coil the after market cap had, unless its a small dissy with a external coil, but any stock cap should work as replacements

Got an 78 Chevy truck with 350 marked the distributor and took it out to replace module, coil, pick up coil went to dropnit back in the same position and it wont drop back in even though the rotor is lined up??? I think its the damb oil pump shaft . they say to put the oil pump groove in the 11 O'clock position but still cant get it to drop in ?? Thing is pissing me off .
@TattsForLife4 жыл бұрын
its the teeth on the gear they twitch around about a 1\4 of a inch as it drops down in place adn the button moves, what I do is drop it down it in place with the rotor and dissy lined up where it needs to be, and I hold pressure down on it and get someone to bump it over, while being safe away from fans and such, its on the cam gear so it cant get out of line and as it bumps over it will drop on into place on the oil rod, be sure to have the dissy unpluged which it should be cause you have the cap off. or you can take a big one way and stick it down the hole and trun the shaft, im lazy and usaly just bump them over years of messing with autos lol leans you cheater tricks

@@TattsForLife don't mean to be a pain in the ass but I followed your instructions spent most of the morning/afternoon dicken with the distributor and still not fully dropping in???? . I even temporarily super glued the oil pump shaft in the base of the distributor and repeated the process you decribed and it's still not wanting to engage into the engine fully it gets down into the engine and leaves a gap of 7/32nds between the base and the engine and will not drop in? We have a spare distributor that I took off the gear and left the oil pump shaft in and the distributor fell right in no issues? Took the same distributor out the gear back on and same issue will not engage ??? Its a hair off some how ever time or something in the engine is out of wack just enough to keep the distributor for engaging ? I'm use to mopars our set up is much simpler to deal with .

@@TattsForLife its just a stock chevy 350 . we measured the distributor and maesured a new stock distributor same size and length and width ? we noticed its missing its nylon plastic sleeve from the factory that goes between the oil pump shaft andthe shaft on the oil pump. most of the new oil pump shafts come with a weak roll pin that holds a steel sleeve on the end of the shaft??? if it was close and you have a timing light, you could just re time the engine, if its a tooth off or so a small twist of the timing should get it back in speck, if you having trouble, for it setting down all the way where it needs to, you can set it where the number 1 lines up and have someone crank it over while u hold pressure down on the shaft and it should slide on down, what it is the oil pump driver rod is not lining up with the new shaft prefect
